{"id":18042,"date":"2012-06-21T08:58:13","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T12:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=18042"},"modified":"2013-04-03T21:39:53","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T01:39:53","slug":"a-tale-of-two-faces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/a-tale-of-two-faces\/","title":{"rendered":"A tale of two faces"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16478 alignright\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dreamstimefree_4718692-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dreamstimefree_4718692-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dreamstimefree_4718692-681x1024.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, two items hit the Web that draw very different conclusions from premises that on the surface seem very similar: putting a face to the abortion debate.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the name of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/06\/18\/155283352\/one-writer-puts-a-face-to-the-abortion-debate\">interview<\/a> NPR\u2019s Michel Martin conducted with Sarah Tuttle-Singer, who last month wrote an essay entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kveller.com\/blog\/pregnancy\/my-jewish-abortion\/\">My Jewish Abortion<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s also the heart of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2012\/06\/18\/my-sister-doesnt-know-my-secret-i-survived-an-abortion\/\">essay<\/a> LifeNews published by Melissa Ohden, who recounts her search for the biological family she never knew after she survived an abortion and was put up for adoption. The former illustrates the fears and pressures of the frightened young mother; the latter conveys the personhood of her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>We are meant to infer from Sarah\u2019s story that unintended pregnancy is a serious, frightening thing facing real people, and therefore the mother\u2019s judgment must reign supreme in deciding whether to end it &#8211; that \u201cthe choice that&#8217;s made has to be in her best interest and has to come from what that voice inside of her says is the right choice to make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa\u2019s story, meanwhile, reveals that Mom\u2019s not the only one abortion affects, that there\u2019s a distinct, priceless individual who usually dies as a result. Her message is ultimately about gratitude for the \u201copportunity at life and being loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s essential to be mindful of both souls when considering abortion, to maintain a proper balance of respect for the baby\u2019s rights and compassion for his or her mother\u2019s circumstances. Unfortunately, only one of the authors gives the other face the consideration it deserves.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2012\/06\/18\/my-sister-doesnt-know-my-secret-i-survived-an-abortion\/\">describes<\/a> the contacts she\u2019s established among her biological family, explaining why she \u201cunderstand[s] and respect[s]\u201d their decision to not yet reveal her existence to her teenage sister. She speaks of healing from abortion and remarkably has nothing but love, understanding, and openness for the family of someone who almost killed her.<\/p>\n<p>But Sarah? Her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kveller.com\/blog\/pregnancy\/my-jewish-abortion\/\">column<\/a> doesn\u2019t mention her lost son\/daughter at all, save for one reference to keeping \u201can unwanted child\u201d out of the world. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/06\/18\/155283352\/one-writer-puts-a-face-to-the-abortion-debate\">interview<\/a> she admits having \u201ca hard time reconciling a previous decision with the excitement of seeing this tiny blip on an ultrasound monitor and saying wow, that&#8217;s a baby, that&#8217;s life.\u201d But there\u2019s no explanation as to whether her first child was life, too, no discussion about whether any consideration was owed to that life.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Martin even asks whether she as a Jew ought to have a special regard for human life because of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Her response? Simply reiterating that abortion was a personal choice, that \u201cwe should not take on the burden of Jewish identity in this. You know, we&#8217;ve got enough on our shoulders.\u201d Where you\u2019d expect at least <em>some<\/em> sort of talk about how the unborn aren\u2019t victims in the same way as the Jews, here they don\u2019t even get a mention. It\u2019s all about her.<\/p>\n<p>The very existence of people like Melissa Ohden exposes why that approach isn\u2019t good enough. When was Melissa ever a non-person? Who are we &#8211; any one of us &#8211; to say she should have been killed?
