At the end of January, there were two marches the same weekend both claiming to stand for women. But the network coverage was anything but similar.<\/p>\n<p>One was for <a href=\"http:\/\/abortionprocedures.com\">abortion<\/a>, the other was for life. One claimed larger numbers. But the other boasted a presidential address. And the networks that follow President Trump\u2019s every tweet hardly noticed as, for the first time ever, the president addressed the March for Life live via satellite.<\/p>\n<p>During their morning and evening news shows from Jan. 19 through\u00a0Jan. 22, the three broadcast networks covered the 2018 Women\u2019s March nearly seven times more than the 2018 March for Life. ABC, CBS and NBC combined devoted 25 minutes, 24 seconds on the Women\u2019s March, but just 3 minutes, 46\u00a0seconds on the pro-life rally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-blog_body-100 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/s3\/files\/styles\/blog_body-100\/s3\/images\/chartgo_19.png?itok=WD6971Jn\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap5\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Last year, when Vice President Mike Pence and White House counselor Kellyanne Conway spoke from the March for Life stage, the networks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2017\/01\/30\/trump-card-nets-cover-march-life-37x-more-2016\">covered the event with<\/a> 21 minutes, 52 seconds. This year, they did it in less than 4.<\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap6\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap6\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">On Saturday, Jan. 20, several cities, including Washington, D.C. and New York City, hosted their second annual Women\u2019s March calling for \u201cPower to the Polls.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>The first Women\u2019s March, held the day after President Trump\u2019s inauguration, aimed to mobilize women to tell the new administration that \u201cwomen\u2019s rights are human rights.\u201d Except, according the march\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2017\/01\/13\/womens-march-praises-abortion-new-platform-rejects-pro-lifers\">pro-abortion platform and its behavior towards pro-life organizations<\/a>, \u201cwomen\u201d doesn\u2019t include all women. That became even clearer when organizers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2017\/01\/16\/womens-march-removes-pro-life-group-after-feminist-media-uproar\">removed pro-life group New Wave Feminists from its partner list<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-blog_body-100 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/s3\/files\/styles\/blog_body-100\/s3\/images\/chartgo_20.png?itok=5jZk-X3I\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap9\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">And, when it came to time, the networks prioritized the Women\u2019s March, which boasted America\u2019s largest abortion provider, <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\">Planned Parenthood<\/a>, as a major sponsor.<\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap10\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap10\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">According to organizers, more than 100,000 Americans attended the 45th <a href=\"http:\/\/marchforlife.org\/march-life-2018\/rally-march-info\/\">March for Life<\/a> on Jan. 19. The rally condemns abortion around the anniversary of the Supreme Court\u2019s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion in the U.S. But while the largest annual march in Washington, D.C. regularly attracts massive crowds, the networks refuse to give them \u2013 and the unborn they march for \u2013 the coverage they deserve.<\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap11\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Before the Women\u2019s March weekend even began, the networks had already dedicated 6 minutes, 49\u00a0seconds to it &#8212; more than they gave to the 2018 March for Life total.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap12\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">One of the first mentions came Jan. 19, when ABC co-anchor George Stephanopoulos interviewed actress Sarah Jessica Parker on <em>Good Morning America<\/em>.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"video-filter embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"video-filter video-mrctv vf-526751 embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/526751\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap13\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u201cTomorrow is the year anniversary of that women&#8217;s March on Washington. This has really been a year of women&#8217;s power, hasn&#8217;t it?\u201d he prompted her.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That was just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 20, <em>CBS This Morning<\/em> and NBC&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Today<\/em> covered the March for Life <em>as a part of their larger coverage of the Women\u2019s March<\/em>. CBS reporter Paula Reid admitted that the Women&#8217;s March \u201chas come under criticism, for only representing the views of liberal women,\u201d before interviewing a woman who attended the pro-life march. For her part, NBC correspondent Morgan Radford noted the \u201cstark contrast\u201d between the Women\u2019s March and the March for Life that was put \u201cputting abortion rights advocates on edge.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-filter embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"video-filter video-mrctv vf-526750 embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/526750\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap15\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap15\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0Other reports were glowing. On Jan. 21, ABC correspondent Eva Pilgrim highlighted the \u201c#weekendofwomen\u201d with over 250 marches with \u201chundreds of thousands packing in\u201d \u201cstretching as far as the eye can see.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap16\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap16\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0By Monday morning, the coverage hadn\u2019t stopped. For <em>CBS This Morning<\/em>, co-anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell included a <em>USA Today<\/em> story on the march in \u201cthis morning\u2019s headlines.\u201d And <em>Today<\/em>\u00a0co-anchor Hoda Kotb remembered the \u201cpowerful scenes in cities all across the country this weekend.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap17\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-blog_body-100\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.newsbusters.org\/styles\/blog_body-100\/s3\/images\/march_3.jpg?itok=URQ427je\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap18\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">In their March for Life coverage, all three networks described the marchers as \u201canti-abortion\u201d \u2013\u00a0not \u201cpro-life.\u201d NBC even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/01\/19\/cbs-ignores-abc-nbc-give-under-3-minutes-march-life\">aired a photo<\/a> emphasizing the (very) small group of counter-protesters.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">CBS didn\u2019t even cover the event until the next morning, on Saturday, when anchor Alex Wagner announced that \u201cthis was the first time a sitting president addressed the rally.\u201d (That was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/17\/trump-march-for-life-2018-343842\">incorrect<\/a>: both Ronald Reagan, in 1987, and George W. Bush, in 2008, did by phone.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">During their morning and evening news shows for the past five years (2013 \u2013 2017, the broadcast networks have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/01\/17\/5-year-study-nets-spend-fewer-24-minutes-march-life\">offered fewer than 24 minutes to the March for Life<\/a>. To put that in perspective, ABC, CBS and NBC spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2017\/01\/30\/trump-card-nets-cover-march-life-37x-more-2016\"><em>more than three times that<\/em><\/a> on the Women\u2019s March in 2017 alone, with 1 hour, 15 minutes, 18 seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2018, before the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powertothepolls.com\/\">main Women\u2019s March event<\/a> happened Sunday in Las Vegas, the news shows had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/01\/20\/evening-news-cover-womens-march-3-times-more-march-life\">already covered<\/a> the Women\u2019s March three times more than the 2018 March for Life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-blog_body-100\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.newsbusters.org\/styles\/blog_body-100\/s3\/images\/today_-_womensmarch_-_07_01_03_am.jpg?itok=WAExT6Xk\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With their evening shows immediately following the 2018 March for Life on Friday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/01\/19\/cbs-ignores-abc-nbc-give-under-3-minutes-march-life\">networks combined spent<\/a> a mere 2 minutes, 6 seconds on the pro-life rally. Meanwhile, according to MRC Latino, U.S. Spanish-language television news leader Univision only dedicated 20 seconds to the March for Life Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p><em>Methodology<\/em>: MRC Culture watched the evening news shows from the three broadcast networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) directly from the morning of January 19, 2018 to the morning of January 22, 2018. MRCC also watched those same evening news shows from ABC and NBC directly following the Women\u2019s March on January 20, 2018. For CBS, MRCC watched the Women\u2019s March <em>Evening News<\/em> segment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/120-cbs-evening-news\/\">online<\/a> for Jan. 20 and Jan. 21.
