{"id":176699,"date":"2017-12-21T15:03:36","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T21:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=176699"},"modified":"2021-07-14T21:29:08","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T02:29:08","slug":"abortion-pill-reversal-relevant-nursing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-reversal-relevant-nursing\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion pill reversal is relevant to the practice of nursing, says CA nursing board"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/apr-bon-dec-2017\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>) Facing intense political pressure from abortion activists, a major licensing agency stood its ground this week and delivered a major victory for women facing unexpected pregnancies throughout the nation.<\/p>\n<p>In a written letter sent Dec. 19, the California Board of Registered Nursing notified Heartbeat International that it can now grant continuing education units (CEUs) to nurses who study a life-saving process known as Abortion Pill Reversal.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s good news for future mothers who change their mind after taking the first pill in a two-step chemical abortion regimen known as mifepristone (RU-486) or \u201cthe abortion pill.\u201d In the past five years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/how-samantha-saved-her-baby-with-abortion-pill-reversal\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/how-samantha-saved-her-baby-with-abortion-pill-reversal&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFhnipKz8n3KqPxukYM_rqG2aMoIg\">more than 400 mothers<\/a>\u00a0have successfully rescued their babies through an emergency progesterone treatment that has been used for more than 50 years to prevent miscarriages.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by a network of more than 350 medical providers, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionpillreversal.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.abortionpillreversal.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEcbz4snWGeU7MRaqZlriRUEbu9nw\">Abortion Pill Reversal<\/a>\u00a0hotline <a href=\"tel:(877)%20558-0333\">(1-877-558-0333<\/a>)\u2014staffed with licensed medical professionals\u2014answers over 50 calls per month from women who want to keep their baby after having started the chemical abortion pill process.<\/p>\n<p>In its letter to Heartbeat, the California Board of Registered Nursing acknowledged that Abortion Pill Reversal is relevant to the practice of nursing and, therefore, eligible for CEU credit.<\/p>\n<p>One mother\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/is-abortion-pill-reversal-junk-science-try-telling-that-to-rebekah\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/is-abortion-pill-reversal-junk-science-try-telling-that-to-rebekah&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE9mD6d9U6fInki2Gdfzg4qX6lxOA\">who rescued her baby<\/a>\u00a0via Abortion Pill Reversal in 2013, Rebekah Buell, said she had to travel nearly two hours from her Sacramento-area home to visit a doctor who could help her.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93853\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93853\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-93853\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/rebekah-buell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/rebekah-buell.jpg 672w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/rebekah-buell-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-93853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via Rebekah Buell: Pro-Life Speaker public Facebook page<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBecause of that physician and the progesterone he prescribed, my son, Zechariah, survived the abortion pill, and he is now a healthy and thriving 4-year-old who I cannot imagine life without,\u201d Buell said. \u201cWhen nurses are unable to be trained in the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol, patients in need\u2014like me and my baby\u2014suffer. That\u2019s what makes this decision so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually the third time the Board has approved the same coursework for CEUs through Heartbeat, which first received approval as a CEU provider in 2012 and began offering credit for education on Abortion Pill Reversal online and at its annual conference shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>Following a 17-month audit, the Board\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-nursing-board-flip-flops-will-now-deny-women-abortion-related-choice\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-nursing-board-flip-flops-will-now-deny-women-abortion-related-choice&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJjC0TyACn2Iwvb_f-Hz6n371sbA\">confirmed Heartbeat\u2019s ability to offer CEU credit<\/a>\u00a0for the coursework in a letter sent July 28, 2017, but then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-nursing-board-flip-flops-will-now-deny-women-abortion-related-choice\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-nursing-board-flip-flops-will-now-deny-women-abortion-related-choice&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJjC0TyACn2Iwvb_f-Hz6n371sbA\">reversed its own decision<\/a>\u00a0with a letter sent <span data-term=\"goog_1601029669\">Sept. 5<\/span>, revoking CEU credit.<\/p>\n<p>The latest decision allows Heartbeat to immediately resume offering CEU credit for an online course and for a workshop at its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartbeatservices.org\/training\/conference\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.heartbeatservices.org\/training\/conference&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFO-KDGipWOSCcRRCIIz-xDKYgnQg\">2018 conference<\/a>\u00a0entitled, \u201cThe Latest on Abortion Pill Reversal,\u201d taught by Dr. George Delgado\u2014one of two physicians who pioneered the treatment starting in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Heartbeat president Jor-El Godsey, who had called the Board\u2019s decision in September a \u201cnaked political attack,\u201d said he was impressed that the Board has now placed nursing standards above political pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever a person\u2019s stance on abortion, knowledge of this critical protocol is too important to withhold from nurses,\u201d Godsey said. \u201cWe&#8217;re glad that the Board of Nursing acted in the best interest of their noble and caring profession today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Failed Political Hit Job<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Along with submitting an immediate appeal in September, Heartbeat placed a public records request that revealed high levels of coordination and influence from prominent abortion lobbyists, including NARAL Pro-Choice America and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rewire.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/rewire.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIKBiyCn0w_P7mnI1GRcAdJX-GjA\">Rewire.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/finish-line-nearing-for-year-long-audit-of-pro-life-org\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/finish-line-nearing-for-year-long-audit-of-pro-life-org&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFUi_qLHkuez4WPuILLuloadeLy0A\">previously reported at PregnancyHelpNews.com<\/a>, an activist with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rewire.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/rewire.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIKBiyCn0w_P7mnI1GRcAdJX-GjA\">Rewire.com<\/a>, Nicole Knight, teamed up with California State Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) to pressure the Board into auditing Heartbeat starting in late 2015.<\/p>\n<p>According to emails obtained through Heartbeat\u2019s public records request, Knight and representatives from both NARAL and avowedly pro-abortion UC San Francisco insisted that Board officials take action against Heartbeat and its fellow pro-life pregnancy help groups, Care Net and National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hill authored legislation to try and disqualify all courses on Abortion Pill Reversal from receiving course credit. Mandating that all courses rely solely upon undefined \u201cgenerally accepted scientific principles,\u201d the law went into effect in 2016, but ultimately failed to disqualify the training.<\/p>\n<p>After the Board notified Heartbeat that it had approved the course this July, Knight reached out to the Board on <span data-term=\"goog_1601029670\">August 14<\/span> to verify that it had in fact issued the letter, prompting one high-ranking official to warn fellow administrators, \u201cThis issue has the potential to go viral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That same day, Spencer Walker, an attorney with the state\u2019s Department of Consumer Affairs\u2014which oversees the Board of Nursing\u2014sent Morris a memo cautioning the Board from taking any further action against Heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept of abortion pill reversal is clearly science-based, and a registered nurse would likely be involved in the indirect care of a patient seeking abortion pill reversal assistance through education or other means,\u201d Walker wrote. \u201cTherefore, the board could be exposed to litigation if it prohibits continuing education providers from offering courses in abortion pill reversal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Walker\u2019s warning, less than a month later\u2014and three days before Heartbeat received the letter\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2017\/09\/08\/california-regulator-stop-teaching-abortion-reversal\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2017\/09\/08\/california-regulator-stop-teaching-abortion-reversal\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG1zMDHxlq6aID8nsVhk6ZSHsZUFg\">Rewire.com published a report<\/a>\u00a0on the Board\u2019s notice preventing Heartbeat from offering CEUs for any coursework related to Abortion Pill Reversal.<\/p>\n<p>Heartbeat has been a California-approved CEU provider since 2012, opting to go through California because the state\u2019s CEUs are generally accepted throughout the U.S.\u00a0In the past three years, Heartbeat has issued nursing CEUs to well over 400 nurses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the Fuss Over Abortion Pill Reversal?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171332\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171332\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-171332\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/drdelgado.jpg\" alt=\"Delgado abortion pill reversal\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/drdelgado.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/drdelgado-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-171332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. George Delgado<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since two doctors\u2014Delgado in California and Matthew Harrison in North Carolina\u2014began implementing the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol in 2007, abortion advocates have almost uniformly denounced and attempted to discredit the effort.<\/p>\n<p>While deriding the protocol as \u201cjunk science,\u201d prominent abortion supporters such as UC San Francisco\u2019s Daniel Grossman routinely argue that only a small number of women who are resorting to a chemical abortion will regret their decision and try to stop the procedure mid-process.<\/p>\n<p>Writing at\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0this August, Grossman and a co-author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/aug\/02\/abortion-pill-reversal-anti-choice-activism\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/aug\/02\/abortion-pill-reversal-anti-choice-activism&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGYYmsWu-lBDooFlWCy-0ayCd4JCw\">oscillated between both arguments<\/a>\u00a0before landing on their central claim\u2014and revealing the underlying reason abortion advocates feel bound to oppose Abortion Pill Reversal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27745910\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27745910&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHTQcXI-ES0hGYr-f3iSE2iD0XULw\">recent study<\/a>\u00a0led by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco found that women seeking abortion had high levels of certainty around their decision as measured by a scale that has been used in other healthcare settings. In fact, patients seeking abortion were more certain than those making decisions about reconstructive knee surgery or prostate cancer treatment\u2026 At the core of \u201cabortion reversal\u201d is a desire to undermine the high level of decision certainty among people seeking the service.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That \u201ccertainty\u201d is not true of all women\u2014a fact that 400-plus mothers have both experienced firsthand.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, contrary to the ideologically opposed contingent represented by Grossman, NARAL and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rewire.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/rewire.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFIKBiyCn0w_P7mnI1GRcAdJX-GjA\">Rewire.com<\/a>, some doctors who support abortion acknowledge that Abortion Pill Reversal is built upon a sound scientific foundation, even though the research is still in its infancy, with only one peer-reviewed report published in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0this July, for instance, Yale School of Medicine\u2019s Dr. Harvey Kliman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/18\/magazine\/a-new-front-in-the-war-over-reproductive-rights-abortion-pill-reversal.html\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/18\/magazine\/a-new-front-in-the-war-over-reproductive-rights-abortion-pill-reversal.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEmBQY0KgETvwMNM_I-b6tL0Ookjg\">said the protocol<\/a>, \u201cmakes biological sense,\u201d and went as far as to say he would recommend the treatment to his own daughter.<\/p>\n<p>As Kliman and others have recognized, the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol is really just an innovative use of a proven, decades-old treatment. Just as progesterone has been used to stop a threatened spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), it can be used to stop a threatened induced abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Countering Grossman\u2019s assertion that too few women regret\u2014or are even unsure\u2014of their decision to abort, one abortion practitioner in California, Christine Henneburg,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/www.sfchronicle.com\/opinion\/amp\/When-a-woman-changes-her-mind-about-abortion-12345712.php\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/www.sfchronicle.com\/opinion\/amp\/When-a-woman-changes-her-mind-about-abortion-12345712.php&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1513970971742000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEkbcTkbPKr9T-Ek5pjUm84OMJtmA\">recently called such claims<\/a>\u00a0a \u201ccop-out\u201d in an op-ed published by\u00a0<em>The San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Henneburg wrote that she and other abortionists, \u201chear all kinds of reasons from patients seeking abortion \u2018reversal.\u2019\u201d Incredibly, rather than going on to argue that a woman\u2019s choice to stop her abortion should be celebrated, Henneburg instead suggests that her industry, \u201cmove away from the language of \u2018choice\u2019 and toward a language of \u2018trust.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With word spreading about Abortion Pill Reversal in many of the nation\u2019s top media sources\u2014including\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0(a LexisNexis search <span data-term=\"goog_1601029671\">Monday<\/span> pulled well over half a million references in the past nine months)\u2014it\u2019s becoming impossible for even the most ardent abortion supporters to justify keeping medical professionals in the dark about the protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Delgado, who co-authored the 2012 report in\u00a0<em>Annals of Pharmacotherapy<\/em>, is expected to publish further research in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis decision allows us to continue to spread the word that it is possible to reverse the abortion pill,\u201d Delgado said. \u201cIt also supports our endeavor to further equip the pro-life medical community to serve as agents of hope to our hotline callers desperately seeking a second chance at life for their unborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018second choice\u2019 we offer women who change their minds after taking mifepristone not only gives their unborn babies a fighting chance, it also provides an avenue for emotional and spiritual healing.
