Live Action News has previously detailed<\/a> how the National Organization for Women’s (NOW) move toward abortion<\/a> was actually influenced by pro-abortion men<\/a>, and how, instead of advocating for all women born and unborn, NOW used its power to crush the opposing views of pro-life feminists<\/a>.\u00a0What is rarely discussed is how women who initially supported NOW’s agenda abandoned NOW over the very issue of abortion. According to an April 1973\u00a0report published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, many NOW members resigned after the abortion resolution was adopted by NOW.”[I]n 1968, many members of the feminist action group, National Organization for Women, angrily resigned after the group endorsed repeal of all laws restricting abortion,” the paper stated.<\/p>\n

Some will leave and ‘some won’t join’<\/strong><\/p>\n

A November 30, 1975, article in the\u00a0Dubuque Telegraph Herald quoted Iowa NOW chapter President, Nina Perrott, admitting that some NOW members believed supporting the right to late-term abortion might cause the group to lose members.\u00a0“Here,” Perrott said, “some men or women won’t join because they see NOW more as pro-abortion than pro-choice.”<\/p>\n

The Roswell Daily Record noted in a report published November 17, 1977, opposition to pro-abortion women’s groups. “Opposition to the women’s movement grew rapidly after the Supreme Court legalized abortion on January 22, 1973,” said the Record. “While feminists claimed the decision as a major victory, many women who were opposed to the movement before, mainly because of its pro-abortion stand, joined such antiabortion groups as National Right to Life Movement and March for Life.”<\/p>\n

Perrott’s prediction was right, and the women’s movement’s adoption of pro-abortion tenets as well as the pro-abortion stance of NOW repelled even seasoned NOW members, such as Elizabeth Boyer, Bev Mitchell, and Paige Palmer… and later, it repelled at least 15,000 more women just like them:<\/p>\n

One of the original, longtime members of NOW, Elizabeth “Beth” Boyer,\u00a0resigned after NOW, which claimed to promote the views of all women, passed the first pro-abortion resolution of any women’s group in the nation.<\/p>\n

In her book Subverted<\/a>, author Sue Ellen Browder noted Boyer’s pro-life convictions drove her from NOW in 1967.\u00a0“She knows the women she recruited to join NOW in Ohio would be as appalled at the abortion plank as she is. In Boyer’s words, a ‘new life is a sacred trust,'” wrote Browder.\u00a0New York Times columnist Gail Collins described<\/a> the split between Boyer and NOW,\u00a0writing that Boyer resigned after “a ‘shouting match'” over abortion a year later and\u00a0founded<\/a> the Women’s Equity Action League (WEAL).<\/p>\n

WEAL, under Boyer’s leadership, was instrumental in the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, according to author<\/a>\u00a0Browder. WEAL also worked to abolish university quotas and discrimination against women.\u00a0As a result, Boyer\u00a0was one of the first women inducted into Ohio’s Women’s Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Boyer has been described<\/a> as a “brilliant and influential American lawyer,” a “champion<\/a> for gender equality in education and advocate in the passage of Title IX legislation,” as well as an author.<\/p>\n

Bev Mitchell<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Collins also\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0in her book<\/a>\u00a0the split other women, like Bev Mitchell, had with NOW. Mitchell reportedly said that NOW’s national leadership\u00a0“got so domineering that, according to them, there is just no room in the feminist movement for women who do not believe in abortion.”<\/p>\n

In 1971, Mitchell merged her NOW chapter with the Cedar Rapids Women’s Caucus.<\/p>\n

An October 31, 1971, report by the Cedar Rapids Gazette (pictured below) stated that it was NOW’s support of abortion that drove the decision to leave the organization.<\/p>\n

Paige Palmer<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1967, Paige Palmer, NOW\u2019s director of women\u2019s activities, ended up walking out of NOW\u2019s conference at the Mayflower Hotel where the abortion resolution was introduced.\u00a0As NOW president Betty Friedan forced her male-initiated abortion resolution on members, Palmer warned<\/a>\u00a0conference attendees, “People will not join this organization if we adopt this resolution.” Rather than fighting for women’s rights, author Browder<\/a>\u00a0noted that Palmer observed that there was “a group who came only to see that the abortion question was discussed and passed.” Medical expert Dr. Shepherd Aaronson was also stated to have been “shut up in no uncertain terms,” while women with no medical knowledge were allowed to speak in favor of abortion.<\/p>\n

Browder concluded, “Before the dust completely settled, one-third of the women who attended the Mayflower Hotel convention resigned from NOW.”<\/p>\n

In part two, we will show that even ten years later, women still loudly opposed the move towards abortion ‘rights’ through the National Organization for Women.<\/p>\n
