As the first presidential race after the 1973 <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> Supreme Court decision,\u00a0her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Shared-Vision-McCormack-Presidential-Campaign-ebook\/dp\/B006ZKVWNI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candidacy<\/a>\u00a0focused on the rights of the preborn.\u00a0McCormick&#8217;s 1976 political commercials show her discussing her views with Dr. Mildred Jefferson, a leader in the National Right to Life movement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m Ellen McCormack, and I&#8217;m disturbed the Democratic Party is <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8MSC3c03Xnw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">becoming<\/a> the party of abortion,&#8221; McCormack\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MKjpJJo4AsU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MKjpJJo4AsU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The commercial focused on taxpayer-funded abortions. Did you know also that a million babies have their hearts stopped each year in a very painful way by abortion?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holding a young baby, she continues, &#8220;I&#8217;m Ellen McCormack, a Democratic candidate for President. Help me to keep these hearts beating. Together we can help both the mother and your baby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EN3h6auFSJw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nursingclio.org\/2016\/08\/31\/new-york-grandmother-seeks-democratic-presidential-nomination-ellen-mccormack-1926-2011\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0suggested McCormack&#8217;s political inspiration came when her home state of New York passed one of the first laws legalizing abortion. But McCormack\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/02\/09\/archives\/antiabortion-candidate-sparks-funding-debate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the New York Times her activism was actually stirred after seeing images of an aborted child in 1970, two years before <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I went to some meetings and saw some slides,&#8221; she stated.\u00a0&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t believe what was happening. Some people called it a &#8216;fetus.&#8217; I was convinced it was a human life being taken. It was a baby, it was a terrible thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/feminists-never-wanted-abortion\/\">Our first feminists never wanted abortion<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She claimed that politicians were being &#8220;intimidated&#8221; by pro-abortion feminists to urge for liberalization of abortion laws.\u00a0&#8220;The feminists have convinced the politicians they represent all women,&#8221; McCormack told the New York Times.\u00a0&#8220;But I am a woman too&#8230;. They are teaching women it is alright to have multiple abortions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McCormack&#8217;s son, John McCormack, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/two-time-presidential-candidate-ellen-mccormack-dies-84-article-1.124078\">told<\/a> the New York Daily News that when McCormack was pregnant with him she had a serious heart problem.\u00a0&#8220;The doctors were recommending that she have an abortion and she refused, and that was her inspiration to enter that cause,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_176582\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176582\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-176582\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-prolife-presidential-candidate.jpg\" alt=\"Ellen McCormack prolife presidential candidate\" width=\"196\" height=\"190\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-176582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellen McCormack profile Democratic presidential candidate<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An excerpt from the Journal of Policy History, written by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/results?searchtype=regular&amp;filtered_content=author&amp;search_term=%22Stacie%20Taranto%22\">Stacie Taranto<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/471613\">published<\/a> by Project Muse, detailed McCormack&#8217;s run:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">.<em>.. [T]he most unlikely assortment of politicians\u2014a group of housewives from Long Island\u2014attempted to pass a Human Life Amendment by running a candidate for president of the United States. In 1976, one of the housewives, Ellen McCormack, ran in the Democratic presidential primary. \u2026\u00a0 McCormack\u2019s campaign was managed from kitchen tables across Long Island with guidance from a sympathetic Catholic priest and a local\u00a0attorney well versed in election law. This help\u2026 enabled McCormack to appear on the ballot in twenty-one states and garner 267,590 popular votes. Remarkably, she was the first woman to qualify for federal matching funds and Secret Service protection. Yet McCormack and her Democratic presidential primary campaign have received little scholarly or popular attention.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026 \u201cI am running for president,\u201d McCormack wrote, because \u201cwomen who support traditional values must express themselves in order to neutralize what the feminists are doing in our name.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>McCormack told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/02\/09\/archives\/antiabortion-candidate-sparks-funding-debate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, &#8220;I stand for the rights of the unborn&#8230; all the other candidates are in favor of a law that could kill 50 million innocent beings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_176600\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176600\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176600\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Ellen McCormack\" width=\"750\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-jpg.jpg 750w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-jpg-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-jpg-700x523.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ellen-McCormack-jpg-500x373.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-176600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellen McCormack<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McCormack&#8217;s candidacy was chronicled in Jane Gilroy\u2019s book\u00a0<a title=\"A Shared Vision\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shared-Vision-McCormack-Presidential-Campaign\/dp\/1432755064\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1342301241&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=gilroy+a+shared+vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Shared Vision,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0a book Michael New <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2012\/08\/6039\/\">reviewed<\/a>, detailing Gilroy&#8217;s account of McCormack&#8217;s campaign as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>As a founding member of New York\u2019s Pro-Life Action Committee (PLAC), she pledged to withhold support from legislators who supported legal abortion and to recruit pro-life candidates to run against state legislators who were not supporting pro-life bills\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2026 [S]he\u2026 organized the 1971 Women\u2019s March for Life in New York City, which drew over 10,000 participants&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The fact that McCormack\u2019s campaign was using federal matching funds to run pro-life television commercials outraged many party leaders and the Federal Election Commission. They went so far as to change the election rules during the primary campaign with the specific intent of denying Ellen McCormack additional federal matching funds.
