Their unique calling has been the focus of many news reports, because, to many parents and hospital staffers, these volunteers are heroes. Here, Live Action News will highlight several of these volunteers, who are actually helping babies to lead healthier and better lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carol Sharp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carol Sharp has been cuddling babies for ten years. When <a href=\"http:\/\/wkrg.com\/2017\/02\/03\/whats-working-volunteer-cuddlers-comfort-babies-exposed-to-opiates\/\">WKRG<\/a> caught up with her, she was cuddling babies born to mothers addicted to opioids at\u00a0USA Children\u2019s and Women\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>She told the reporter that her babies like to be held tight, but that she sometimes feels helpless, because &#8220;you can&#8217;t do enough for them.&#8221;\u00a0Tragically, these babies suffer the effects of withdrawal right after birth, including crying continuously, sweating, and tremors.<\/p>\n<p>These babies need a lot of specialized care, and volunteers like Sharp are often called upon to show up in the middle of the night to comfort them.\u00a0But as the reporter in the video states, &#8220;It&#8217;s a cuddler&#8217;s loving embrace that is the best medicine for these troubled babies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u0q5xk1_b3w\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Deutchman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Deutchman, nicknamed the &#8220;ICU Cuddler,&#8221;\u00a0is a volunteer at Children&#8217;s Hospital in Atlanta.\u00a0&#8220;I hold babies. Sometimes I get puked on, I get peed on &#8211; it&#8217;s great,&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Deutchman told USA Today in the video below. &#8220;I just love doing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4WX3N6aW_OE\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A photo posted to the Hospital&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ChildrensHealthcareofAtlanta\/photos\/a.374292508185.161226.356527358185\/10155628323873186\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Facebook page<\/a> in September shows David cuddling a baby who was born at just 25 weeks. The post reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Logan has been in our hospital for six weeks. Every night, his mom goes home to be with his big sister. Every morning, she drives back to Scottish Rite feeling \u201canxious that he\u2019s been missing his mommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On this particular morning, she walked into the PICU to find Logan\u2014a preemie born at just 25 weeks\u2014in the arms of David, who smiled and introduced himself as the ICU Grandpa. This photo captures just one precious moment with a legend of a hospital volunteer who\u2019s been holding patients, and their parents\u2019 hands, for 12 years.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deb Snider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After retiring as a school principal, Deb Snider became a volunteer baby cuddler at\u00a0Blank Children&#8217;s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care.\u00a0&#8220;I love it a lot. I would pay to do this, but don&#8217;t tell them,&#8221; Snider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/article\/she-calls-it-the-best-job-in-the-world-1\/6881437\">told<\/a> KCCI.<\/p>\n<p>Snider has been cuddling baby Avery, who was born at just 24 weeks, weighing\u00a0just 1 pound and 8 ounces.\u00a0In the video below, you can hear the reassuring words Snider tells little Avery, who has reached nearly 6.5 pounds in the video.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I get the most back from these babies. It&#8217;s the best job in the world, and I have retired, but I feel like I have won the lottery,&#8221; said Snider.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7_j-ulCETO0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Grandpa Mike&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grandpa Mike volunteers at Aurora BayCare\u00a0Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In the video below, Grandpa Mike is seen cuddling little\u00a0Remy Werner, who was born four months premature. Remy&#8217;s mother delivered him at only 28 weeks, and he weighed just over two pounds.\u00a0His story was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjFxueN0oPYAhVD5CYKHccCAXMQFggnMAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbc26.com%2Fnews%2Fnbc26-cares%2Fvolunteer-baby-cuddlers-bring-comfort-to-nicu-preemies-and-their-families&amp;usg=AOvVaw01l9Q8eT_Rpl-qKEY5lPSk\">captured<\/a> in the video below by NBC26:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M0iIMhfyTfc\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Grandpa Mike told NBC26 that his time at the NICU as a volunteer was rewarding. &#8220;It&#8217;s so fulfilling,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It gives you back that reason for getting up in the morning and feeling like you&#8217;re part of society, and I have a purpose in my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karen Branley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Karen Branley <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/News\/newsarticle.aspx?id=5794\">volunteers<\/a> as a baby cuddler for newborns at Mass General Hospital in Boston.\u00a0She calls her little ones &#8220;Precious Gifts.&#8221;\u00a0The staff says that the babies thrive when they are cuddled.\u00a0&#8220;They gain weight quicker. They have shorter length of stays,&#8221; a nurse at the NICU stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M4bOEF1XIrc\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lou Ann Curry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lou Ann Curry is a volunteer cuddler at Baylor University Medical Center\u2019s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Dallas.\u00a0Curry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y9E4y0qr9gw\">told<\/a> the Dallas Morning News that she had a son and a grandson in the NICU and she can understand what parents are going through. She said that cuddling these babies is the highlight of her day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y9E4y0qr9gw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marijo Lendak<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Akron Children\u2019s Hospital has had a cuddler program for over 15 years. Volunteers hold babies who need special attention while their parents either need a break or cannot be with them.\u00a0Marijo Lendak\u00a0is a volunteer with the hospital\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I hold one of these little people, I feel like I remember when my children were small and how it helped. We always cuddled,\u201d she <a href=\"http:\/\/wkbn.com\/2016\/06\/15\/volunteers-cuddle-with-newborns-at-akron-childrens-hospital\/\">told<\/a> WKBN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t feed, we don\u2019t change, we don\u2019t bathe. It\u2019s just that human contact and we try to keep them snuggled,\u201d Lendak says in the news clip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WStQraZypTg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Burns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Retired nurse Mary Burns has cuddled more than 50 babies at Geisinger\u00a0Wyoming Valley&#8217;s neonatal intensive care unit.\u00a0&#8220;I find a lot of joy in doing it, knowing I can give them some comfort,&#8221; Mary said.<\/p>\n<p>For Mary, cuddling preemies is rewarding. &#8220;How many times a baby smiles in their sleep. &#8230; [T]hat&#8217;s something really nice to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/avYr5ERcIpo\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peg Henderson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peg Henderson says her passion is babies.\u00a0She tells her fellow church members that Monday is her favorite day of the week,\u00a0because she volunteers as a baby cuddler at Florida&#8217;s\u00a0Winnie Palmer NICU.\u00a0Dr. Gregor Alexander told WFTV in the video below that because volunteers hold these babies, it makes them eat and sleep better &#8220;and gain weight faster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5rgS5UShf-Q\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The &#8220;Cuddle Club&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At UMC Health System, they call these special volunteers the &#8220;Cuddle Club.&#8221;\u00a0The medical center says that the best volunteers are retired persons who have the time to devote to their program.<\/p>\n<p>These cuddlers say they love to hold the babies, but they also like to speak to the parents and reassure them that their little ones will be comforted when they are unable to be with them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aZ8mUKct6dI\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Research shows that cuddling premature and sick babies can benefit their health and growth.\u00a0But even if a child is too young to hold, cuddlers can comfort these infants with a simple touch.\u00a0Studies show that touching and speaking softly to babies can reduce their stress and heart rate.<\/p>\n<p>Close physical contact can also produce positive results, even ten years down the line.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News contributor\u00a0<span class=\"author-name vcard fn author\"><a title=\"Posts by Nancy Flanders\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/author\/nancy\/\" rel=\"author\">Nancy Flanders<\/a><\/span>\u00a0featured a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/kangaroo-care-saving-lives-premature-infants-around-world\/\">report<\/a> on what\u2019s been dubbed &#8220;kangaroo care,&#8221; a holding method based on the way a mother kangaroo carries her child in her pouch close to her skin, warmed by her body.\u00a0 Flanders explained that in a similar fashion, a newborn human, often preterm or low birth, is placed on her mother\u2019s bare chest \u2013 belly to belly, in between the breasts, with the child\u2019s head turned so she can hear her mother\u2019s heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>A study <a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2016\/12\/08\/peds.2016-2063\">published<\/a>\u00a0in 2014 by\u00a0the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics\u00a0found that kangaroo care had &#8220;significant, long-lasting social and behavioral protective effects 20 years after the intervention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/about\/press-releases\/research-and-journals\/the-loving-touch-is-critical-for-premature-infants\">published<\/a> by\u00a0Biological Psychiatry<em>\u00a0<\/em>found that &#8220;during the first half-year of life, mothers in the KC [kangaroo care] group were more sensitive and expressed more maternal behavior toward their infants. Children in the KC group showed better cognitive skills and executive abilities in repeated testing from six months to ten years.&#8221; Psychology Today reviewed the study and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/the-athletes-way\/201401\/early-loving-touch-makes-lifetime-difference-baby\">noted<\/a> that at ten years of age, the children who had received skin-to-skin (KC) maternal contact as infants were healthier across the board, showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More regular\u00a0sleep patterns<\/li>\n<li>Better neuroendocrine response to\u00a0stress<\/li>\n<li>More mature functioning of the autonomic nervous system<\/li>\n<li>Better overall cognitive control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second to the gift of life, some would claim that human touch is one of the most precious gifts you can give.
