Their 11-minute interaction was caught on Ryan&#8217;s body camera. &#8220;You&#8217;re going to kill your baby,&#8221; he told her.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal broke down in tears at his words.<\/p>\n<p>She told CNN that her first thoughts were, &#8220;How dare you judge me? You have no idea how hard this is,&#8221; tearfully remarking, &#8220;I know the horrible person that I am, and I know the horrible situation that I&#8217;m in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CNN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/01\/health\/police-officer-adopts-homeless-opioid-newborn-btc-beyond-the-call-of-duty\/index.html\">notes<\/a> that during their conversation, &#8220;Champ emotionally told Ryan that she desperately hoped someone would adopt her baby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A police officer explains to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edlavaCNN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@edlavacnn<\/a> how he came to adopt a baby from a pregnant drug addict: &#8220;I just felt God telling me, &#8216;Tell her that you will do it because you can.'&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gtfadLV75Y\">https:\/\/t.co\/gtfadLV75Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 New Day (@NewDay) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewDay\/status\/936581974759575552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Holets&#8217; reaction was obviously unexpected and unconventional. But he says he felt it was what he was supposed to do. &#8220;I just felt God telling me, &#8216;Tell her that you will do it, because&#8230; you can.'&#8221; He showed her a photo of his wife and children. When he did, Champ was reportedly &#8216;stunned&#8217; and looked at him to make sure he was &#8220;genuine&#8221; about offering to adopt. CNN says, &#8220;She realized instantly, her prayers had been answered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithwire.com\/2017\/12\/01\/watch-body-cam-catches-the-on-the-spot-selfless-decision-cop-makes-for-a-pregnant-woman-about-to-shoot-up-heroine\/\">FaithWire<\/a>, the Holets family had felt a strong calling toward adoption already&#8230; they just didn&#8217;t realize they&#8217;d be doing it so soon:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rebecca [Holets], too, said that she and her husband felt \u201ccalled\u201d by God to adopt; the couple already had four children, including a 10-month-old at the time. While they planned to do so sometime in the future, those plans were clearly expedited.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ryan was at the hospital when baby Hope was born, just three weeks later. Unfortunately, she also\u00a0was addicted to heroin and went through weeks of withdrawal (and treatment for withdrawal) in the hospital. According to CNN:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many experts says intensive intervention in early infant care is crucial to ensuring a healthy future for the baby. After the initial medical treatment, Dr. [Heather] Pratt-Chavez says &#8220;skin-to-skin&#8221; touch is crucial in lowering stress levels and ensuring the most nurturing development.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A baby&#8217;s sensitivity to touch actually begins in the womb. While it is commonly accepted that babies are able to feel pain by <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/what-science-says-about-fetal-pain\/\">20 weeks<\/a> (this study suggests it may be possible <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/research-now-shows-reborn-babies-feel-pain-very-early-by-8-weeks\/\">as early as eight weeks<\/a>), one study notes that by 35 weeks, preborn babies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2011\/09\/09\/study-unborn-babies-can-differentiate-touch-pain-in-womb\/\">can actually distinguish <em>touch<\/em> from <em>pain<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHe8YGPGzj4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A few days after Hope&#8217;s birth, Holets&#8217; wife Rebecca came to see the baby. CNN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/12\/01\/health\/police-officer-adopts-homeless-opioid-newborn-btc-beyond-the-call-of-duty\/index.html\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rebecca watched Crystal fawn over how beautiful the little girl looked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love you. Goodbye,&#8221; Rebecca recalled Crystal saying to the baby. &#8220;And then she turns to me and says, &#8216;Take care of her for me.&#8217; And I said, &#8216;I will take good care of her and you take good care of yourself.&#8217; It was super emotional.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Crystal told CNN that she wanted a better future for her baby girl, knowing she and her daughter&#8217;s father, Tom Key, simply could not raise Hope while continuing to struggle with opioid addiction. &#8220;We did not give her up because we didn\u2019t want her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hope is home with her four siblings and her adoptive parents and is doing well, though she may experience developmental difficulties.
