She is the first woman with Down syndrome to compete in a Miss USA pageant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want the whole world to see that I can do things that are hard and that people with Down syndrome are beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/teen-syndrome-rescues-girl-drowning-italy\/\">and talented<\/a>,&#8221; Mikayla <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/first-woman-with-down-syndrome-to-compete-in-miss-minnesota-usa-pageant\/420145783\/\">told the Star Tribune<\/a>. With Iceland and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-syndrome-address-un-right-live\/\">other countries<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iceland-isnt-eradicating-down-syndrome-it-is-killing-every-person-who-has-it\/\">trying to eradicate people with Down syndrome<\/a>, Mikayla&#8217;s message is one the world needs.<\/p>\n<p>Sandi, Mikayla&#8217;s mother\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/first-woman-with-down-syndrome-to-compete-in-miss-minnesota-usa-pageant\/420145783\/\">shared<\/a> that, when Mikayla was born prematurely, doctors told her and her husband that their daughter might never talk or walk. She also received the Director&#8217;s Award.<\/p>\n<p>On Facebook, fans took to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Mikayla.InspirationalDancer\/\">Mikayla&#8217;s page<\/a> to write words of encouragement and to share how she has inspired them to fully believe that all human beings are equal and valuable:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are some people that you encounter in your life that truly inspire you and Mikayla is one of those people. Thank you for being an inspiratio<wbr \/>n to not only other people, other amazing people with Downs but myself as well. Keep flashing that beautiful smile &amp; keep on dancing!!!<wbr \/>!!!<\/p>\n<p>What an inspiration and such a beautiful, determined, and talented young lady. I would be blessed to have half of her success in life!<\/p>\n<p>What an inspiration!!! Such a beautiful, talented, courageous young woman!! Thank you for stepping out there and leading the way!!!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sandi, Mikayla&#8217;s mother, wrote on Facebook about watching Mikayla dance during the talent portion of Miss Minnesota:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;you should have seen me watching this Friday. This was an older dance, which I have seen so many times. But sitting in the audience with an amazing crowd of students, hearing them cheer her on, I was a blubbering mess. &#8230; The young people who wanted to meet her afterwards was overwhelming at times. I am just holding on for the ride.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prior to Saturday&#8217;s Miss Minnesota pageant, Mikayla, a student at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethel.edu\">Bethel University<\/a>, had competed in other pageants and won one of them. Her mother says she&#8217;s already gone far beyond what they dreamed of for her.
