{"id":175422,"date":"2017-11-29T08:02:25","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T13:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=175422"},"modified":"2025-07-29T18:57:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T23:57:23","slug":"first-trimester-babies-complex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/first-trimester-babies-complex\/","title":{"rendered":"First trimester babies aren&#8217;t blobs of tissue &#8212; they&#8217;re amazingly complex"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Pregnancy is an amazing time in which the body goes through many changes to nourish a new, developing human being, and to prepare for that baby&#8217;s birth.\u00a0While the mother is going through many changes of her own, her baby is growing at a remarkably rapid rate, especially during the first trimester, before a mother even know she&#8217;s pregnant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IssB-cz47g4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ehd.org\">Endowment for Human Development<\/a>\u00a0(EHD) is\u00a0&#8220;a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health science education and public health.&#8221; With National Geographic, EHD produced a fascinating DVD called The Biology of Prenatal Development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Signals of Life in the Womb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EHD writes that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit1.php#epf\">on day two<\/a> &#8212; just 24-48 hours after fertilization occurs &#8212;\u00a0&#8220;pregnancy can be confirmed by detecting a hormone called &#8216;<strong>early pregnancy factor&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>EPF<\/strong> in the mother\u2019s blood. &#8230; This substance helps prevent the mother\u2019s immune system from rejecting the soon-to-be-implanted embryo and allows pregnancy to proceed.&#8221; In other words, well before a baby has implanted into the lining of his mother&#8217;s womb (which EHD says happens around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit1.php#implantationbegin\">day 6<\/a>), he is already sending out signals that he is alive and is not a foreign substance to be rejected. Emergency contraception, which manufacturers recommend be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/article\/emergency-contraceptive-pill.html\">taken up to 5 days<\/a> after unprotected sex, has the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/studies-show-all-forms-of-emergency-contraception-cause-abortion\/\">potential to cause the death<\/a> of that new, living human being.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Donna Harrison, Executive Director of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-planned-parenthood-research-misleads-women-basic-pregnancy-facts\/\">told Live Action News<\/a>, &#8220;At the moment of sperm egg membrane fusion, neither the sperm nor the egg exist any longer. What exists is a new entity\u2026. The embryo continues to develop and if given support and nourishment will continue through the full spectrum of human existence from embryo to fetus to newborn to child to adolescent to adult.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeline of a Baby&#8217;s Prenatal Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a timeline of the preborn baby&#8217;s growth and development, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/science_main.php?level=i\">EHD.org<\/a>. Dating is measured from fertilization:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 1<\/strong>: The embryo attaches to the uterine wall, and the placenta begins to form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 2<\/strong>: Early on in the first trimester, the baby&#8217;s brain is the first organ to appear, with its three main divisions, and the &#8220;beginnings of the heart can be seen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 3<\/strong>: The blood and blood vessels appear. (Right around this time is when the mother could have a positive pregnancy test.) The heart begins to beat between days 16 and 21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weeks 4 and 5<\/strong>: Eyes, lungs, and the cerebral hemispheres of the brain appear and begin growing quickly.\u00a0Kidneys form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weeks 6 and 7<\/strong>: Brain waves begin, and hands, feet, and legs appear and begin to move. The heart now has four chambers, and the baby can rotate his head and have hiccups. A girl now has eggs in her ovaries, and a baby at this stage can suck his thumb, move his tongue, sigh, stretch, move his head, and open his mouth. According to EHD, &#8220;right- and left-handedness emerges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_248915\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-248915\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-248915\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb-593x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb-593x700.jpg 593w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb-768x907.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb-500x591.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/8-week-child-in-womb.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-248915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">8 weeks post-fertilization<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/abortionprocedures.com\">AbortionProcedures.com<\/a>, the abortion pill is &#8220;approved by the FDA for use up to ten weeks since the first day of [the pregnant mother&#8217;s] last menstrual period (LMP).&#8221; This would be in the first trimester, around the eighth week after fertilization. He frequently practices breathing movements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weeks 31-40<\/strong>: EHD notes that &#8220;the newborn prefers [his mother&#8217;s] voice to any other&#8221; as well as &#8220;female voices to male voices and familiar lullabies heard before birth to new lullabies after birth,&#8221; which shows &#8220;evidence of in utero memory formation and learning.&#8221;\u00a0The baby is drinking almost two cups of amniotic fluid a day and eventually initiates birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHe8YGPGzj4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While the mother is clearly going through many visible changes of her own during pregnancy, what is not seen with the naked eye is the amazing development of the child in the womb &#8212;
