Nurses, whom the legislation would affect, testified at the event. (<em>Video Below.)<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-filter embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"1510243543837_TBOtherPlayer_10\" class=\"video-filter video-youtube video-center vf-wnwwvnknk6o embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wNWWVnKNK6o?modestbranding=0&amp;html5=1&amp;rel=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;loop=0&amp;controls=1&amp;autohide=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;theme=dark&amp;color=red&amp;enablejsapi=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"imkadwrap3\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>Sponsored by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), the bill would would allow healthcare professionals to pursue legal action if they\u2019re discriminated against for refusing to perform abortion and \u201cprovide legal recourse for hospitals, health systems, religious charities, churches and insurance companies who are required to participate in or provide coverage for abortion,\u201d The Hill <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/359396-anti-abortion-lawmakers-push-conscience-protection-bill\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, three nurses shared personal testimonies in support of the bill: Cathy DeCarlo, a New York nurse forced to help with abortion, Sandra Mendoza, an Illinois nurse who lost her job because she wouldn\u2019t aid in abortion and Fe Vinoya, a New Jersey nurse who risked her job for refusing assist with abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Of the three nurses, DeCarlo spoke first. She began her nursing career in the Philippines to follow her \u201cpassion for helping patients\u201d and to serve God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy faith in God and the Catholic Church\u2019s teaching about the sanctity of all human life further inspired my career in nursing as it encouraged me to serve all those who are sick with gentleness and respect,\u201d she added. \u201cMy faith also informed my conscience to never harm or intentionally take the life of an innocent person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After working in the Philippines, she moved to New York in 2001 for new opportunities to grow her career. Three years later, she began working at a New York hospital that \u201cassured\u201d her she would \u201cnever have to compromise my conscience and participate in an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in 2009, that changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was preparing for what I thought was going to be a common procedure following a miscarriage,\u201d she said, tearing up, \u201conly to realize that I was being asked to perform an abortion on a live 22-week-old unborn baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she asked for a substitute to take her place for the\u00a0abortion, her supervisor refused.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, her supervisor warned her that \u201cif I didn\u2019t assist, I would be charged with insubordination and abandoning my patient.\u201d DeCarlo added, \u201cMy nursing career and ability to care for patients and provide for my family would be over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memory still haunts her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll never forget that day as I watched in horror as the doctor dismembered and removed the baby\u2019s bloody limbs, and\u00a0I had to account for all the pieces,\u201d she confessed. \u201cI still have nightmares about that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Because of that experience, DeCarlo called on Congress to pass the Conscience Protection Act \u201cso that no other nurses or healthcare professionals are ever forced to go through what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to DeCarlo, Mendoza and Vinoya also cited their religious convictions against abortion.<\/p>\n<p>An award-winning nurse, Mendoza stressed that she lost her job in 2015 at the Winnebago County Health Department because of her \u201creligious convictions that prevent me from taking a person\u2019s life,\u201d including through abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m called to protect life, not destroy it,\u201d she said, citing the Hippocratic Oath. \u201cWhile we may not all agree on abortion, I\u2019d hope we can all agree that no doctor or nurse should be forced out of employment on account of their faith and commitment to protecting life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Congress passes the Conscience Protection Act,\u201d she added, \u201cI would have legal recourse to pursue justice in my case to ensure that hospitals receiving federal dollars do not discriminate against or force to lose their jobs healthcare professionals like me who seek to protect all innocent life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Mendoza, Vinoya urged that \u201cparticipating in the destruction of human life is not only a violation of my religious convictions, it also conflicts with my calling as a medical professional to protect life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was asked to choose between following my conscience or keeping my job to sustain my family &#8212; a choice no American should ever have to face,\u201d she urged.<\/p>\n<p>While her state, New Jersey, and federal law \u201cprohibited discrimination against\u201d her and 12 nurses who refused to perform abortion, she warned,\u00a0in a written statement provided after her speech,\u00a0that \u201cin practice those laws are only as effective as the willingness of government officials willing to enforce them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Conscience Protection Act, her statement concluded, \u201cclarifies existing protectons and provides a private right of action so that healthcare professionals like me do not have to rely upon which ever administration is in power to enforce law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers at the event included Rep.
