Friedan, who\u00a0falsely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4744103\/betty-friedan-men-influenced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> she &#8220;started the Woman&#8217;s Movement,&#8221; was once <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/1973-year-humanists-eugenicists-abortion-advocates-joined-forces\/\">granted<\/a> the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americanhumanist.org\/what-is-humanism\/humanist-of-the-year-awards\/\">Humanist of the Year<\/a>\u201d award. She authored the book, &#8220;The\u00a0Feminine Mystique,&#8221; which didn&#8217;t even mention abortion in its first publication. Friedan has been quoted as saying, &#8220;Ideologically, I was never for abortion. Motherhood is a value to me, and even today abortion is not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the NOW founder was eventually convinced &#8212; by these two pro-abortion men\u00a0&#8212; to push abortion as part of NOW&#8217;s official platform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T3KFXqOCE7c\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/subverted.liveaction.org\">SUBVERTED: How the sexual revolution hijacked feminism<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Friedan&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4744103\/betty-friedan-men-influenced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admission<\/a> to NARAL supporters was captured in CSPAN&#8217;s 1989 video, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?9556-1\/decides-political-action-prochoice\">Who Decides? Political Action for Pro-Choice.<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0She referred to the 1960s pro-choice push as the \u201csecond American evolution of women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First of all, the word &#8216;abortion&#8217; was almost never heard in the early 60s. It was never used in the newspapers,&#8221;\u00a0Friedan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4744103\/betty-friedan-men-influenced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the group.\u00a0&#8220;There were many founders of NOW&#8230; and they persuaded me this was too controversial to take on, it might split the burgeoning women&#8217;s movement,&#8221; Friedan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4744103\/betty-friedan-men-influenced-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, in fact, it did.<\/p>\n<p>She added that at the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">time<\/a>, the issue was too controversial even for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-population-control-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_175563\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-175563\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-175563\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Betty-Friedan-speaks-to-NARAL-hitstory-of-NOW-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Betty-Friedan-speaks-to-NARAL-hitstory-of-NOW-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Betty-Friedan-speaks-to-NARAL-hitstory-of-NOW-700x460.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Betty-Friedan-speaks-to-NARAL-hitstory-of-NOW-500x328.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Betty-Friedan-speaks-to-NARAL-hitstory-of-NOW.jpg 731w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-175563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Betty Friedan speaks to NARAL history of NOW<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/a-look-at-the-past-present-and-future-of-pro-life-feminism\/\">READ: <em>A look at the past, present, and future of pro-life feminism<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Labeling her fight the &#8220;NAACP for Women,&#8221; Friedan confessed that it was primarily two pro-abortion\u00a0<em>men<\/em> who convinced her to use NOW to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/now.org\/about\/history\/highlights\/\">promote<\/a>\u00a0abortion.\u00a0&#8220;I remember that there were some men &#8212; doctors, lawyers &#8212; that had been trying to reform these criminal abortion laws. And they got a sense somehow that the women&#8217;s movement might make everything different,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They had gotten nowhere but they had a sense. So, they kept nagging at me, to NOW, to do something&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When it was clear that NOW wasn&#8217;t going to [promote it] in those first years,&#8221; Friedan says the men came to her pleading for help. These men were Lawrence Lader and Dr. Bernard Nathanson (a founder of NARAL who later became pro-life). Because of her book, Friedan had &#8220;a little bit of fame,&#8221; and &#8220;these guys, they loved me, because I was helping to give them some visibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Friedan helped establish NARAL, (known then as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws) at the First National Conference on Abortion Laws held in Chicago in 1969. She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?9556-1\/decides-political-action-pro-choice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> that at NARAL&#8217;s founding, few women attended: &#8220;I have to tell you. It wasn&#8217;t very large and my hunch is that women were not the majority of people even at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/oasis.lib.harvard.edu\/oasis\/deliver\/~sch00781\">Harvard University Library<\/a>, two of NARAL\u2019s three member pre-formation planning committee were men:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/23\/former-margaret-sanger-award-winner-and-promponent-of-forced-abortion-was-on-the-board-of-anti-immigration-organization-fair\/\">Garrett Hardin<\/a>\u00a0and Lawrence Lader. (Lader met Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger in 1953, and in 1955, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Margaret-Sanger-Story-Fight-Control\/dp\/B000GP4KVY\">published<\/a>\u00a0a biography on her, later co-authoring another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Margaret-Sanger-Pioneer-Birth-Control\/dp\/0690519346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">account<\/a> of Sanger.)<\/p>\n<p>Abortionist and NARAL founder Bernard Nathanson also played a role in convincing Friedan to push abortion.<\/p>\n<p>In her book, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.liveaction.org\/products\/subverted-how-i-helped-the-sexual-revolution-hijack-the-womens-movement\">&#8220;Subverted,&#8221;<\/a> author Sue Ellen Browder described Lader as being adamant that the women&#8217;s movement was key to decriminalizing abortion. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep the women out front\u2026 and some Blacks,\u201d she quotes Lader as telling Nathanson at a NARAL strategy meeting. On a 1967 trip the men took together, Lader said, &#8220;If we&#8217;re going to move abortion out of the books and into the streets, we&#8217;re going to have to recruit the feminists&#8230;. Friedan has got to put her troops into this thing &#8211; while she still has control of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Browder\u00a0says Nathanson\u00a0originally objected to the idea of using feminists to further their movement but later proclaimed, \u201cI was dead wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_176914\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176914\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-176914 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Larry-Lader-discusses-abortion-on-CSPAN-2000-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Larry Lader, abortion\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Larry-Lader-discusses-abortion-on-CSPAN-2000-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Larry-Lader-discusses-abortion-on-CSPAN-2000-80x80.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-176914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Larry Lader in 2000<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/actress-singer-super-model-stay-home-mom-true-feminists-pro-life\/\">READ: <em>An actress, a singer, and a supermodel show that true feminists are pro-life<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Abortion-II-revolution-Lawrence-Lader\/dp\/0807021806\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1511977489&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=Abortion%2C+Lader\">Abortion II<\/a>,&#8221; Lader recounted his interaction with Friedan: &#8220;We had known each other for years, and while she was writing <em>Mystique<\/em>, I occasionally suggested that all feminist demands hinged on contraception and abortion and a woman&#8217;s control over her own body and procreation.&#8221; He also wrote that\u00a0Friedan was hesitant, fearing it would &#8220;split[] off Catholics and conservative professionals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lader eventually convinced Friedan to market abortion as a way women could &#8220;control their bodies,&#8221; crediting Margaret Sanger, who said, \u201cNo woman can call herself free who does not own and control her own body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over time, Friedan saw problems with her male-created feminism, and <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bATkCwAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA74&amp;lpg=PA74&amp;dq=Friedan,+overemphasizing+abortion+right&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=wkCtRhqbkM&amp;sig=254UJVqOF3ffq9QRyqPio91Du90&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiC3cX_teTXAhVh6YMKHS7-COcQ6AEIQDAE#v=onepage&amp;q=Friedan%2C%20overemphasizing%20abortion%20right&amp;f=false\">noted<\/a>\u00a0that her movement&#8217;s failure &#8220;was our blind spot about the family.&#8221;\u00a0In promoting her book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Second-Stage-New-Introduction\/dp\/0674796551\">Second Stage<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0Friedan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/1981\/1028\/102801.html\">called<\/a> for her movement to &#8220;stop overemphasizing abortion rights and reaffirm the importance of family.&#8221; But the damage was done.<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, Friedan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/99\/05\/09\/specials\/friedan-next.html\">decried<\/a> the &#8220;lack of reverence for life and the mysteries of conception and birth&#8221; in pro-choice feminism:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Maybe there was something slightly off in the way we handled abortion. Such slogans as &#8221;free abortion on demand&#8221; had connotations of sexual permissiveness, affronting not only the moral values of conservatives but implying a certain lack of reverence for life and the mysteries of conception and birth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>After all, why do feminists seem to be fighting &#8221;for abortion&#8221; against women who say they are fighting for &#8221;the right to life&#8221;? How can we fight the real battle in such terms? Who is really for abortion? That is like being for mastectomy&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In contrast to NOW, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministsforlife.org\/the-truth-about-susan-b-anthony\/\">early feminist leaders<\/a>\u00a0like <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4093214\/suffragettes-abortion\/\">Susan B. Anthony<\/a> referred to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ethics\/abortion\/mother\/early.shtml\">abortion<\/a> as &#8220;child murder&#8221; and viewed it as a means of exploiting both women and children.
