Parents of premature babies are often battling through stressful, emotionally trying times as their babies fight to survive. But at St. Luke&#8217;s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, the tiny preemies still get to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/national\/tiny-babies-celebrate-their-first-halloween-complete-with-costumes\/JXc8etWmPv7U36S6dJdPkN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrate holidays like Halloween<\/a> &#8212; complete with tiny, adorable costumes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fliveaction%2Fposts%2F10155789247053728&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"689\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By partnering with the March of Dimes, the hospital makes sure that preemies get to wear their first costumes. \u201cEvery day, a child in the NICU can be frightening and uncertain, but holidays are especially tough, as families miss the normal joys of celebrations at home,\u201d Rebecca Keunen, March of Dimes\/NICU family support coordinator for St. Luke&#8217;s, said. Parents get to keep the precious photos of their babies dressed as butterflies and ladybugs, Wonder Woman and Batman.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses and volunteers work together to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebump.com\/news\/kansas-city-preemie-halloween-costumes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bring the holidays into the NICU each year<\/a>. \u201cThe idea is to be able to allow parents to have a sense of normalcy,\u201d Michelle Manual, St. Luke\u2019s director of media relations, said in an interview with ABC News. \u201cIn the NICU you might be there for weeks or months and this is to help spend that first Halloween and those special first moments together\u2014make those special family memories with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the most popular costumes? Dr. Edward Bell, one of the study&#8217;s leaders, said that parents needed to know that \u201cthe hospital that you go to might determine what happens to your baby, although many parents are not in a position to shop around when they find themselves in these emergency situations.&#8221; Some hospitals are only willing to give comfort care to preemies, as opposed to active treatment.
