{"id":173340,"date":"2017-10-14T10:57:17","date_gmt":"2017-10-14T14:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=173340"},"modified":"2017-10-14T00:27:11","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T04:27:11","slug":"hey-teen-vogue-these-15-women-taking-abortion-pill-nothing-like-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hey-teen-vogue-these-15-women-taking-abortion-pill-nothing-like-period\/","title":{"rendered":"Hey, Teen Vogue, these 15 women say taking the abortion pill is nothing like having a period"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Teen Vogue, a magazine which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-biggest-nightmare-pro-life-teen-responds-teen-vogue\/\">takes<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/teen-vogue-gift-guide-post-abortive-teens-heres-what-really-need\/\">clearly<\/a> pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/teen-vogue-presents-abortion-clinic-escorts-as-heroic\/\">abortion<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sorry-teen-vogue-cecile-richards-is-no-feminist-role-model\/\">stance<\/a>\u00a0and markets itself to young women, recently published another abortion-favorable article, meant to support the ACLU&#8217;s push for more widely available abortion pills, entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/how-abortion-pill-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How the Abortion Pill Works<\/a>.\u201d Currently, only facilities that offer or refer for surgical abortions and which are registered with the pill&#8217;s manufacturer can dispense it. The drug, mifepristone, causes the uterine lining to break down, killing the preborn child. A second drug, misoprostol, is usually given afterwards to cause contractions to expel the dead baby. This is also known as a medical or chemical abortion.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/how-abortion-pill-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the article<\/a>, the abortion pill is&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; like having a period.\u00a0\u2026While it may cause cramps and bleeding similar to your typical period, it\u2019s a safe, simple, and noninvasive way to provide reproductive care.\u00a0[ACLU attorney] Grant said that the abortion pill is \u201cvery safe\u201d and \u201cvery effective,\u201d adding that the vast majority \u2014 93 to 98% \u2014 of people who use it need no medical treatment or follow-up after their visit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Leaving aside the question of how a medication that fails to work or causes complications 2 to 7 times out of 100 (according to the ACLUs numbers) can be called \u201cvery effective,\u201d\u00a0Teen Vogue\u2019s description of the pill is extremely misleading.\u00a0Women who have taken the abortion pill report experiencing something very different than a typical period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Below are the experiences of 15 women who took the abortion pill; their experiences show that the &#8220;typical period&#8221; claim is a lie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> One\u00a0woman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/05\/11\/health\/11abort.html\">called<\/a>\u00a0it the \u201cworst experience\u2026 I\u2019ve ever been through,\u201d adding, &#8220;The pill for me was the experience of having a baby. Contractions for 10 hours, sweating, screaming, being by myself. It was emotionally scarring and physically horrible<em>.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Another woman said, &#8220;[I] wouldn\u2019t wish that my worst enemy should go through a medical abortion. The pain plus the uncertainty as to whether the abortion had really taken place was awful.&#8221; (1)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Another woman, who also had a surgical abortion, said, &#8220;I would not want my worst enemy to go through what I had to go through. There was an extreme amount of bleeding\u2026 I was wiped out for three or four weeks<em>\u2026.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0(2)<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> A 2016 article from Dianne Fersey,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/babe.net\/2016\/09\/05\/what-its-like-to-have-an-abortion-1051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWhat It\u2019s Really like to Have an Abortion,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0relays the author&#8217;s experience:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After leaving the clinic, I actually\u00a0felt physically fine&#8230;.\u00a0But the pain that came afterwards was the worst thing I\u2019ve ever felt in my life. I couldn\u2019t even move, it was like taking on the period pains of 100 women combined. There was so much blood that I\u2019d have to change my sanitary towel every hour. Overnight, my sheets were covered in blood beyond repair\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fersey is no pro-lifer. \u201cAlthough it was painful, I know I made the right choice,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Norine Dworkin-McDaniel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/abortion-by-pill-one-womans-story-from-marie-claire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told her abortion pill story<\/a>\u00a0in Marie Claire. She\u00a0was happy about the availability of the abortion pill, believing it was a great thing for women:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finally! Abortion would finally become what it always should have been: a private medical matter between a woman and her doctor. It held the promise of swift, at home termination. There would be no more gauntlets of protesters at clinics, because who would know which physicians were dispensing the pills? Even better, the pill would keep abortion accessible&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When she had an unwanted pregnancy, she read the drug insert and decided to try the pill herself, thinking she&#8217;d have no problems:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Mifeprex literature described some cramping and bleeding, \u201csimilar to or greater than a normal, heavy period.\u201d &#8230; A few pills, a couple of cramps, and it would all be over\u2026. I envisioned recuperating on the couch with some uncomfortable but bearable cramps&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nothing&#8230; had prepared me for the searing, gripping, squeezing pain that ripped through my belly 30 minutes later. I couldn\u2019t even form words when Stewart [her boyfriend] called to check on me. It was all I could do to gasp, \u201cCome home! Now!\u201d &#8230; I was disoriented, nauseated, and, between crushing waves of contractions, that I imagine were close to what labor feels like, racing from the bed to the bathroom with diarrhea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The pill had other, terrible side effects:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I had been prepared for the possibility that the pill wouldn\u2019t work&#8230;. I also knew that I might bleed so heavily I need surgery to stop it\u2026 [But] what blindsided me&#8230; [were the] huge, cystic boils that soon covered my neck, shoulders, and back. I was also overcome by fatigue&#8230; I couldn\u2019t work. On top of all that came depression; I sobbed constantly. I wouldn\u2019t leave the house. I stopped showering.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She was shocked to learn from her gynecologist that her experience was not unusual. She was told, &#8220;One day, you&#8217;ll feel just like your old self,&#8221; but &#8220;[i]t took 9 months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Abby Johnson was the manager of a Planned Parenthood facility when she chose to abort by pill. She had heard the lines about it being safe and effective. Her next 24 hours were <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/abby-johnsons-story-of-her-abortion-by-pill\/\">nightmarish<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; I started to feel pain in my abdomen unlike anything I had ever experienced. Then the blood&#8230; was gushing out of me. I couldn\u2019t wear a pad\u2026 nothing was able to absorb the amount of blood I was losing. The only thing I could do was sit on the toilet&#8230; for hours\u2026 bleeding, throwing up into the bathroom trashcan, crying and sweating. I used to watch shows about childbirth. I would see these women in labor&#8230; covered in sweat. I would always think, \u201cGosh, do they keep it hot in the delivery room, or what?\u201d But at that moment, sitting on the toilet, I knew it wasn\u2019t from heat\u2026 it was from pain.<\/p>\n<p>After several hours on the toilet, I desperately wanted to soak in the bath tub.\u00a0\u2026My bathwater was bright red. It looked like I was sitting in the middle of a crime scene \u2026<\/p>\n<p>I stood up&#8230;. I began to sweat again and felt faint&#8230;.\u00a0 Then I felt a release\u2026 and a splash in the water that was draining beneath me. A blood clot the size of a lemon had fallen into my bath water. Was that my baby?\u2026. Then came the excruciating pain again. I&#8230; sat on the toilet. Another lemon sized blood clot. Then another. And another. I thought I was dying. This couldn\u2019t be normal. Planned Parenthood didn\u2019t ever tell me this could happen&#8230;. I decided that I would call them in the morning\u2026 if I didn\u2019t die before then. It was around midnight and I had been in the bathroom for a good 12 hours.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She lay on the bathroom floor all night, calling Planned Parenthood in the morning. A nurse called her back, saying it was &#8220;not abnormal.&#8221; Abby endured <em>eight more weeks<\/em> of cramps, nausea, and blood clots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> A woman quoted by abortion pill inventor Etienne\u2013Emile Baulieu said, \u201cThe pain was like menstrual cramps, 20 times over\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 (3)<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Another woman shared her experience\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/medical-abortion-led-to-excruciating-pain-for-more-than-six-hours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on LiveJournal,<\/a>\u00a0saying &#8220;&#8230; [W]hen the second pill was taking effect, I had the most indescribable excruciating pain for more than 6 hours. It almost killed me\u2026. There was just so much pain that I couldn\u2019t even cry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-choice-woman-recounts-emotionally-scary-dangerous-experience-with-abortion-pill\/\">Kimi Faxon Hemingway<\/a>\u00a0had agonizing cramps, fever, chills and convulsions after medical abortion, and bled heavily for a week. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-choice-woman-recounts-emotionally-scary-dangerous-experience-with-abortion-pill\/\">Then<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;When Hemingway&#8230; finally went back to the abortion facility&#8230; [t]he physician\u2019s assistant who examined her laughed, \u201cYou sure are a bleeder, aren\u2019t you?\u201d Hemingway left the abortion facility in tears.&#8221; After three months, she was still bleeding and &#8220;wearing diapers.&#8221; She visited a different doctor, who had seen women in similar conditions after medical abortion, and prescribed her antibiotics for uterine and bladder infections. After she\u00a0collapsed in public and was hospitalized, a doctor, \u201cstunned\u2019 at her condition, diagnosed her with a serious infection. Her baby was still inside her, which necessitated a D&amp;C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> Another woman <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/woman-talks-about-her-experience-with-abortion-pill\/\">said<\/a>, &#8220;&#8230; [M]y husband&#8230; remembers calling nursing staff on at least two occasions during the 24 hours after my taking the tablets, as we were worried at the nausea, pain and amount\/size of blood clots.&#8221; This was normal, he was told, for up to three days. &#8220;The worst part,&#8221; she says, was the time it took. &#8220;[W]ith each and every large clot of blood \u2013 which I literally could feel passing through my insides and then out of my vagina \u2013 [I was reminded] of the fact I was terminating a baby, for which I felt hugely saddened. More than I realized I would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> Another woman <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/ru-486-patient-you-preside-over-killing-a-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: &#8220;&#8230; [Y]ou have so long to reflect on it, and I became quite upset. \u2026.[P]sychologically it hits you much harder. You preside over the killing of a baby, completely unblinkingly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHe8YGPGzj4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>12.<\/strong> A woman may even see her dead (and possibly quite developed) baby. One woman <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/post-abortion-woman-sees-her-dead-baby-after-abortion-regrets-her-decision\/\">regretted her abortion<\/a> after seeing her child:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[F]our days after the abortion- I went to the washroom and there was a fetus, and I thoroughly examined it. I held it on a piece of Kleenex&#8230;. I started thinking that it could have been a person it could have possibly been loved by somebody else who could have taken care of it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Emotionally traumatized, she could not bring herself to dispose of her child\u2019s body:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For about a week I had it wrapped up in that Kleenex and in the cabinet underneath the sink. I couldn\u2019t bring myself to throw it in the garbage&#8230;. And then every time I came into the washroom I knew it would be in there and I wouldn\u2019t dare open the door of the cabinet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Eventually, she threw the baby out with the trash.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> Amber wrote about her abortion by pill on the pro-life site StandUpGirl.com, <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/woman-sees-8-week-old-baby-after-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted on ClinicQuotes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First off it was the worst pain I have EVER felt in my life. And secondly, I SAW my baby. He\/she looked so human already. I had no idea that my baby was so big after only 2 months. Just because you can\u2019t see or feel it inside you doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not alive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>14.<\/strong> Another woman, who had two prior surgical abortions, told Newsweek, &#8220;There was a little bit of regret about seeing [the baby], because it had little hands. I remember little fists. I felt more responsible this time.&#8221; (4)<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.<\/strong> One woman in the same situation photographed her baby. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/she-took-abortion-pill-then-saw-her-seven-week-old-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">She describes<\/a> the &#8220;counseling&#8221; she received at the facility:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The counselor&#8230;\u00a0proceeded to tell me that the process will be pretty easy\u2026 and that I wouldn\u2019t see anything. They didn\u2019t ever use the word baby. They always just said \u201cit\u201d or \u201ctissue\u201d or \u201cthe process.\u201d They never said anything about the level of development. They did tell me it would be too small to see anything.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But she saw her baby&#8217;s body.\u00a0She could count five fingers on each hand.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-173342 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/pill-baby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/pill-baby.jpg 499w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/pill-baby-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An abortion by pill is nothing like a woman\u2019s normal period. Teen Vogue is deceiving its readers. Sadly, many young women who read it may only learn the truth too late.
