Trent Franks condemns &#8216;inhumanity&#8217; of abortion: &#8216;Isn\u2019t it about time we changed direction?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2017\/09\/26\/rep-trent-franks-hopes-pain-capable-bill-shows-inhumanity\">Newsbusters<\/a>) One U.S. politician is challenging the media to accurately report on a bill he hopes will show the \u201chumanity of the unborn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) held a press conference with pro-life leaders and politicians to announce an Oct. 3 vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. Speakers at the Washington, D.C. event included Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser and the Pickering family.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2012, Micah Pickering was born prematurely at twenty weeks (22 weeks gestation) to Clayton and Danielle. This piece of legislation aims to protect unborn babies after five months, or Micah\u2019s age at birth, when SBA List reports babies can feel pain. Today, Micah is a healthy 5-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Following the press conference, Rep. Franks spoke with MRC Culture about how he wished media would cover the event: by reporting that Americans can agree on this legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KPkmx-iKBqY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would simply want them to say that even though Americans are divided on the abortion issue, when it comes to protecting pain-capable unborn children that have reached the beginning of the sixth month, that we should all have the humanity to come together on something of that clarity and significance,\u201d he urged. \u201cThat I hope this bill will demonstrate the humanity of the unborn and the inhumanity of what\u2019s being done to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he wasn\u2019t confident that reporters would accurately cover the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the media will do that, they will have done their job,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m afraid that that will be a rare occurrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Franks pointed to two \u201cgreat challenges in the life movement.\u201d The first, he said, was a lack of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens \u201csimply didn\u2019t know how real these little babies were, how human they were, how much they looked like babies, that we could take their fingerprints at 10 weeks and identify them at 50 years,\u201d he said. \u201cSo there\u2019s a lot of ignorance that occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He referenced Henry Hyde, the American politician responsible for the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funding for abortion except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s sort of an invincible ignorance that Henry Hyde spoke of, somewhat almost a deliberate ignorance,\u201d Rep. Franks added.<\/p>\n<p>But 5-year-old Micah challenged that narrative. \u201cWhen Micah stands there,\u201d he continued, \u201cyou can\u2019t ignore him. He\u2019s as real as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second of the two challenges was the left, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he left is willing to, for some horrifying reason, to simply deceive the people on the reality that we\u2019re dealing with here,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to try to write a different narrative and take their focus off of anything that points to the child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While he acknowledged the complexity of women considering abortion, he highlighted that women deserve better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that mothers are in a great challenge in these circumstances and my heart is so deeply with them,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there\u2019s nothing liberating about taking the life of a child. It doesn\u2019t liberate the mother. It only puts her in a deeper heartache in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He concluded by encouraging Americans to see abortion for what it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m convinced that if America will look at this as it is, and say \u2018Okay, what\u2019s the real question here? Does this thing kill a baby or not?\u2019 If it doesn\u2019t, then okay, it\u2019s no big deal,\u201d he concluded. \u201cBut if it really does kill a little helpless human baby, and it\u2019s done that 60 million times now, isn\u2019t it about time we changed direction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Franks introduced the pain-capable bill back in January.
