(Newsbusters<\/a>) A bill proposing to ban late-term abortions is a \u201chigh priority\u201d for President Donald Trump, according to one pro-life leader who met with him recently. It’s a bill she’s hoping the media will cover.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) held a press conference with pro-life leaders and politicians to announce an Oct. 3 vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. Speakers at the Washington, D.C. event included Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser and the Pickering family.<\/p>\n

In July 2012, Micah Pickering was born prematurely at twenty weeks (22 weeks gestation) to Clayton and Danielle. This piece of legislation aims to protect unborn babies after five months, or Micah\u2019s age at birth, when SBA List reports babies can feel pain. Today, Micah is a healthy 5-year-old.<\/p>\n

Following the press conference, Marjorie Dannenfelser spoke with MRC Culture. While the House passed (and the Senate blocked) a previous version of the bill in 2015, she stressed that the Oct. 3 vote would be different.<\/p>\n

She first pointed to election pressure. \u201cThis will be a big issue in the 2018 Senate elections,\u201d she said, where constituents can hold politicians accountable.<\/p>\n

Not only that, she added, but the bill boasts the support of the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other thing that is different this time is that the president of the United States, who I talked with last night at the White House about this, considers it a high priority,\u201d she continued. \u201cSo this has become now a national conversation, not just a conversation that you have off on the sidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Dannenfelser, 5-year-old Micah embodied the legislation.<\/p>\n

\u201cMicah really is the real face of this issue,\u201d she urged. \u201cBecause it\u2019s really easy to talk about it, the abortion issue, in abstract theoretical terms. But when you really have come across \u2026 and see a young man running around full of energy and love, you realize this is not any other political issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

While her organization learns \u201ccontinually that there are other boys and girls like Micah,\u201d Dannenfelser highlighted that there was a more important discussion than the number of babies who survived premature births.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, even if there were \u2013 there are really only a handful, there\u2019s something that\u2019s really important about it. It\u2019s not about the fact that they lived, that they defied all odds and they lived, though that\u2019s really important,\u201d she began. \u201cThe 20-week bill actually is generally pre-viability, before children are able to live outside the womb.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, she argued for the importance of every unborn life, viable or not..<\/p>\n

\u201cSo viability as an argument is lacking in compassion, when you see that just like a week before Micah\u2019s birth he could have been legally aborted at many many places,\u201d she added. \u201cYou see that this is about a human being whose life deserves to be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dannenfelser also expressed optimism on media coverage of the bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have really found that over the last several years, of dealing especially with this 20-week bill that the media in general are listening,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, there are obviously exceptions.\u201d<\/p>\n

But this legislation was something that media could comprehend.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut because this really appeals to the basic humanity of people, I\u2019m not saying that they\u2019re on our side, or they\u2019re agreeing, but I think when the \u2013 that when they\u2019re faced with this issue, they at least get it,\u201d she added. \u201cSometimes they don\u2019t even get our issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the media to hurt the bill, reporters would have to censor it, she concluded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only way that media bias could really kill this is by not reporting it at all, which is, of course, one tactic that happens a lot. That would be something of concern,\u201d Dannenfelser concluded. \u201cBut I\u2019m finding mainstream outlets with reporters that they understand why it resonates. They basically get most of the arguments out and frankly, without the pressure of really good outlets, I don\u2019t think that would have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
