margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Since 1945, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laskerfoundation.org\/awards\/\">Lasker Awards<\/a>\u00a0have been granted\u00a0by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation to recognize \u201cthe contributions of scientists, physicians, and public servants who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disease.\u201d In a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-receives-science-award-despite-constant-denial-science\/\">previous<\/a> Live Action News report, Danny David detailed the reasons why the Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award to <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\">Planned Parenthood<\/a>\u00a0was based in anything but science.<\/p>\n<p>But another piece of interesting information is this: Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger&#8217;s most infamous \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/25\/margarets-sangers-racial-profiling-and-planned-parenthood\/\">Negro Project,<\/a>\u201d motivated by her belief in eugenics, was funded in part by none other than Albert Lasker.<\/p>\n<p>In 1939, Sanger\u00a0penned a <a href=\"https:\/\/libex.smith.edu\/omeka\/files\/original\/d6358bc3053c93183295bf2df1c0c931.pdf\">letter<\/a>\u00a0to Clarence Gamble regarding her desire to use Black ministers in furthering her organization&#8217;s agenda, because, she said, \u201cWe do not want\u00a0word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population,\u201d and if it did, these ministers could\u00a0\u201cstraighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of\u00a0their more rebellious members.\u201d This is the project that The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation chose to fund.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171025\" style=\"width: 702px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171025\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-171025\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Margaret-Sanger-Letter-to-Clarence-Gamble-Negro-Project.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"692\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Margaret-Sanger-Letter-to-Clarence-Gamble-Negro-Project.jpg 692w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Margaret-Sanger-Letter-to-Clarence-Gamble-Negro-Project-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Margaret-Sanger-Letter-to-Clarence-Gamble-Negro-Project-500x292.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-171025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Excerpt: Margaret Sanger Letter to Clarence Gamble, Negro Project<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sanger not only founded Planned Parenthood, but <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-margaret-sanger-spoke-ku-klux-klan-supported-eugenics-organization-still-honor\/\">met with members<\/a> of the Ku Klux Klan,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maafa21.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocated<\/a>\u00a0eugenics, and supported the use of sterilization to rid the planet of the \u201cunfit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1937,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.nlm.nih.gov\/ps\/retrieve\/Narrative\/TL\/p-nid\/199\">Mary Lasker<\/a>, known then as Mary Woodward Reinhardt, was secretary of Sanger&#8217;s newly formed Birth Control Federation of America (BCFA). \u00a0According to Lasker&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laskerfoundation.org\/awards\/show\/essential-health-services-and-reproductive-care\/\">website,<\/a> Mary &#8220;made a donation to the American Birth Control League and subsequently joined its board.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1939, Mary connected Sanger to her soon-to-be husband, Albert Lasker, to seek funding for Sanger&#8217;s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/25\/margarets-sangers-racial-profiling-and-planned-parenthood\/\">Negro Project<\/a>.\u201d He eventually gave Sanger $20,000.<\/p>\n<p>To obtain the funds, Sanger, Reinhardt and Sanger&#8217;s secretary, Florence Rose, drafted a report on &#8220;Birth Control and the Negro,&#8221; skillfully using language that appealed both to eugenicists fearful of unchecked black fertility and to progressives committed to shepherding Black Americans into middle-class culture,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>according to New York University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/projects\/sanger\/articles\/bc_or_race_control.php\">website<\/a> for the Margaret Sanger Papers:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171025\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>The report stated that &#8220;[N]egroes present the great problem of the South,&#8221; as they are the group with &#8220;the greatest economic, health and social problems,&#8221; and outlined a practical birth control program geared toward a population characterized as largely illiterate and that &#8220;still breed carelessly and disastrously,&#8221; a line borrowed from a June 1932 Birth Control Review article by W.E.B. DuBois. Armed with this paper, Reinhardt initiated contact between Sanger and Albert Lasker (soon to be Reinhardt&#8217;s husband), who pledged $20,000 starting in Nov. 1939. (&#8220;Birth Control and the Negro,&#8221; July 1939, Lasker Papers)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, in November of 1939, Sanger <a href=\"https:\/\/libex.smith.edu\/omeka\/items\/show\/494\">wrote<\/a> to Albert Lasker requesting the funds, to &#8220;help&#8221; the Black community in the South &#8220;obtain birth control information.&#8221; Sanger also wrote, &#8220;If we can get the Negro universities and the Negro medical groups behind this project I think it will go over, I think, really big&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>LASKERS ACTIVE IN PLANNED PARENTHOOD\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mary and Albert later married and their participation in Sanger&#8217;s organization continued after the initial &#8220;Negro Project&#8221; donation.\u00a0By 1940, a committee to extend and develop the movement of &#8220;planned parenthood&#8221; was formed and consisted of nearly 1000 members, including Albert Lasker.<\/p>\n<p>A New York Times article revealed that in February of that same year, \u00a0Albert donated $10,000 to the Planned Parenthood Committee.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171716\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171716\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-171716\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Albert-Lasker-gives-PP-committee-10K-300x283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Albert-Lasker-gives-PP-committee-10K-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Albert-Lasker-gives-PP-committee-10K.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-171716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Albert Lasker gives Planned Parenthood committee $10K<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The following year (1941), the Laskers gave the Planned Parenthood Committee a total of $50,000 ($25,000 each from Mary and Albert), the largest donation the committee had received.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the Laskers established their foundation in 1942 &#8212; the same year that Sanger&#8217;s American Birth Control League changed its name to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-connections-to-eugenics\/\">Planned Parenthood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Lasker Foundation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laskerfoundation.org\/awards\/show\/essential-health-services-and-reproductive-care\/\">website<\/a>\u00a0has even credited Albert Lasker as the one responsible for Planned Parenthood&#8217;s name:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Albert Lasker supported Sanger\u2019s work as well, and he proposed a new name for her operation\u2014one that better reflected its positive mission and that might ease its public acceptance. According to an October <a href=\"http:\/\/msa.maryland.gov\/megafile\/msa\/speccol\/sc3500\/sc3520\/013500\/013582\/pdf\/nytimes19oct1950.pdf\">New York Times report<\/a>, the award read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To Margaret Sanger foremost in teaching families wise planning in birth control: Leader in influencing nations towards balanced population; living to see her beginnings in city slums grow into plans for a planet.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sanger was unable to receive the award in person because she was speaking to delegates at a luncheon of PPFA&#8217;s 13th annual meeting. The New York Times reported that at that PPFA meeting, their founder was advocating &#8220;a national Government-sponsored program of sterilization of the feeble-minded and victims of transmissible, to Sanger, was to &#8220;save innocent children from the cruelty of being born to such parents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/24\/pro-life-eugenics-victim-makes-naacp-history-makers-list\/\">Elaine Riddick<\/a> was\u00a0the victim of an identical eugenics project, funded by Clarence Gamble, and was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2012\/jan\/25\/nation\/la-na-forced-sterilization-20120126\">forcibly sterilized in North Carolina in 1968<\/a>.\u00a0In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cqaeiybFROo\">video<\/a> below, Riddick stands next to her son, Tony, speaking as a witness to this flawed ideology:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/53mgQqzF37I\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many believe that Sanger&#8217;s &#8220;Negro Project,&#8221; along with her eugenics advocacy, were partly to blame for the attitude many had about Black births, and the Lasker Foundation was unquestionably a part of promoting this horrible and harmful
