UPDATE: 8\/15\/17<\/p>\n

17-year-old Harriette Hoyt is charged with attempted\u00a0murder in the 2nd degree, a class B felony, for placing the baby girl in the garbage.<\/p>\n

Neighbors found the girl, saved her, and called the\u00a0police.<\/p>\n

“My sister came out off the porch and went to the side to the backyard of my neighbor’s house with a stick, thinking it was a dog. We thought it was a dog honey, and it wasn’t. It was a baby,” Karen Seals told WENY.<\/p>\n

“I was going to poke it to see what it was. I dropped that stick, looked down. I dropped it so fast, I walked up and I seen my baby – I’m calling it my baby – the baby, a little girl. Her legs were just dangling in the bag, her head was in the bag, her whole head was covered all the way down. I tore it,” said Kayla Seals, Karen Seal’s sister.<\/p>\n

Police believe the girl is 12-16 months old and had been outside in the bag for over 12 hours.<\/p>\n

Police are investigating a heartbreaking incident in Upstate New York. A baby girl was found alive in the trash outside a home on Walnut Street in Elmira after a neighbor heard what sounded like a cat crying and went to investigate.<\/p>\n

Neighbors told WENY News<\/a> they saw a child’s feet sticking out of a garbage bag behind a home. The baby girl, who was covered in garbage, was rescued by the neighbor and cleaned up.\u00a0The baby was taken to the hospital where she was found to be dehydrated but is in stable condition. Authorities believe the child may have been left outside for 12 hours.<\/p>\n

Elmira Police said they have arrested 17-year-old Harriette M. Hoyt of Sayre, Pennsylvania, in connection with the crime, and have charged her with attempted murder.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first child to be found in the garbage in 2017. In June<\/a>, the body of an infant was found in a garbage bag in Dolton, Illinois. Also in June in Massachusetts<\/a>, the body of a newborn was found in a garbage bag, and two people were charged in the incident.<\/p>\n
