ARLINGTON, VA (October 20, 2016) \u2014 Last night\u2019s presidential debate set off a firestorm of confused and misleading remarks regarding late-term abortions in America. Following is a set of facts on late-term abortions as well as a statement from Lila Rose, president and founder of the national pro-life organization Live Action.<\/p>\n

Statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe abortion industry denies the science of fetal development and continues its barbaric practice of killing over a million preborn children each year, including thousands who are fully developed and can survive outside the womb.\u00a0 Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups have consistently fought restrictions<\/a> on late-term abortions and lobbied for abortion in all nine months of pregnancy, up until birth.<\/p>\n

\u201cContrary to the claims of the abortion industry and its allies, the evidence shows that most late-term abortions aren\u2019t done for any claimed \u2018medical\u2019 reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven research<\/a> published by the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute found that abortions for fetal abnormalities \u2018make up a small minority\u2019 of late-term abortions, and those that are purported to be done to save the mother\u2019s life are an even smaller number.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 1,000 medical professionals have concluded<\/a> that abortion is never medically necessary to save a mother\u2019s life.<\/u>\u00a0 While life-saving treatment for a mother may result in the death of her preborn child, there\u2019s a fundamental difference between a woman receiving medical treatment for her condition versus choosing an abortion to directly kill her preborn child.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn America, most late-term abortions are called \u201cinduction abortions\u201d and are committed by using a long needle to pierce a baby\u2019s brain or heart to deliver a lethal dose of digoxin, which causes cardiac arrest.\u00a0 The baby is then delivered stillborn two to three days later<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. \u00a0(See and link to a medical animation of this procedure presented by former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat likely comes as a surprise to most Americans is that partial-birth abortions have been banned in name only.\u00a0 The federal law<\/a>banning partial-birth abortions still allows for the abortionist to partially deliver a child \u2014 with her legs dangling outside of her mother or most of her head being delivered \u2014 before he kills her.\u00a0 Anyone can clearly see that the child is only seconds away from being born and having legal protections if it weren\u2019t for the abortionist waiting to kill her as she moves through the birth canal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The facts:

Federal law makes it legal to abort babies in the ninth month. \u00a0While some states have restrictions, all states allow abortion into the ninth month for certain exceptions, and seven states and the District of Columbia<\/a> allow abortion until birth for any reason (Alaska, Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington, D.C.)<\/span>

Most late-term abortions are not done for purported medical reasons. \u00a0That claim isn\u2019t backed by the evidence.\u00a0 Diana Greene Foster, professor at the University of California \u2013 San Francisco\u2019s Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, is the author of a 2013 study published by the Guttmacher Institute<\/a> that examined the reasons for late-term abortions. \u00a0\u00a0From FactCheck.org:<\/a> \u201cShe said based on limited research and discussions with researchers in the field that abortions for fetal anomaly \u2018make up a small minority of later abortions,\u2019 and that those for life endangerment are even harder to characterize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Partial birth abortions are still allowed in the U.S. \u00a0The federal law<\/a> banning partial-birth abortions still allows for the abortionist to partially deliver a child \u2014 with her legs dangling outside of her mother or most of her head being delivered \u2014 before he kills her.\u00a0 From the law:<\/p>\n

The term \u201cpartial-birth abortion\u201d means an abortion in which the person performing the abortion deliberately and intentionally vaginally delivers a living fetus until, in the case of a head-first presentation, the entire fetal head is outside the body of the mother, or, in the case of breech presentation, any part of the fetal trunk past the navel is outside the body of the mother. . .<\/p>\n

With nearly one million abortions annually in the U.S., abortionists are killing close to 13,000 children every year who are often fully developed and can survive outside the womb. \u00a0The Centers for Disease Control reported<\/a> in 2012 that 1.3 percent of abortions were committed at 21 weeks\u2019 gestation and later.<\/p>\n

The New England Journal of Medicine reports<\/a> that with medical intervention, the survival rate of babies born at 26 weeks is as high as 81 percent \u2013 with 75 percent of those children having no severe impairments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
