The Chicago Sun-Times Media Wire reported<\/a> on July 11, 2017, that 20-year-old Mubashra Uddin was sentenced by Judge Carol Howard to 48 months’ probation (with credit for 603 days served) plus a $579 fine for dropping her newborn baby girl out an 8th floor window to her death.<\/p>\n

Uddin was originally charged with first degree murder of her daughter in 2015, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. Uddin’s attorneys say the young mother panicked after giving birth, because her Pakistani Muslim parents did not know about her pregnancy and didn’t approve of her boyfriend. Uddin reportedly hid her pregnancy with baggy clothes, and never sought prenatal care. After giving birth in a room where her 10-year-old sister slept, she reportedly heard her mother approaching, and held the baby out a window headfirst, dropping her to the ground.<\/p>\n

The 7 lb. 11 oz. baby girl was found by a neighbor “at about 11:15 p.m. on November 11, 2015” after hearing “muffled cries coming from the bushes in front of the apartment building,” reports the Inquisitr<\/a>. The neighbor “wrapped her in his shirt and blankets, then called paramedics,” says the Sun-Times. The baby died 90 minutes after arriving at a hospital. She had suffered “skull fractures, a spinal fracture, broken left shoulder, fractured left and right ribs, and a lacerated aorta, as well as damage to other internal organs,” Assistant State’s Attorney Patrick Turnock told the Sun-Times.<\/p>\n

As the Sun-Times pointed out<\/a>\u00a0in a previous article, Illinois has a safe haven law, which “allows the parents of unharmed newborns up to 30 days old to hand them over to staff at hospitals, police stations and other designated safe haven sites with no questions asked and without fear of prosecution.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
