The life-saving difference was a free app called, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countthekicks.org\/app-download\/\">Count the Kicks<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Eekoffs shared their story earlier this week on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/video\/mother-count-kicks-app-saved-babys-life-48294368\">ABC\u2019s Good Morning America<\/a>. Emily had downloaded the app\u2014which monitors a preborn baby\u2019s activity\u2014at 28 weeks, and noticed a steep drop-off in Ruby\u2019s movement at 33 weeks and five days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Tracking Ruby\u2019s movement for the previous five weeks, Emily knew she needed to get help right away, and the data at her fingertips enabled her to give doctors at a local hospital enough information to act in time to deliver Ruby early via cesarean section.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cThe kicks were not happening as often as they usually did,\u201d Emily said. \u201dWhen she did move, it was really soft and\u2014not hard, like normal. We have a healthy baby girl and we could have had a funeral instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Rushed to the hospital, the Eekoffs soon learned that the umbilical cord had wrapped around Ruby\u2019s neck three times. The only way Emily knew it had happened was by tracking the kicks through the app, which sends push notifications and reminders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cNot only has Ruby been saved, but potential generations have been saved,\u201d Emily Price, president of Count the Kicks Foundation, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Count the Kicks, as ABC reports, was pioneered by five Iowa mothers who had each suffered a miscarriage late in pregnancy in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The women first teamed up to launch Iowa\u2019s Stillbirth Registry, which Count the Kicks\u00a0<b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countthekicks.org\/founders-story\/\">touts on its website<\/a><\/strong><\/b>\u00a0as, \u201cthe most comprehensive stillbirth data collection program in the country\u201d back in 2004, and they continued to work together in the following years to raise awareness on stillbirth prevention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Count the Kicks has a goal to rescue 6,000 lives each year through its app and ongoing public awareness campaign, which has gained a well-deserved boost through Ruby\u2019s story. Over 5,000 new subscribers have downloaded the app since news of Ruby\u2019s birth first came out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While apps and technology like Count the Kicks, What to Expect Pregnancy Tracker, BabyBump Pregnancy Pro are becoming a norm for expectant mothers, they\u2019re also driving home the undeniable humanity of children at every stage of development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Currently,\u00a0<b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/there-is-no-federal-law-protecting-the-preborn-from-abortion-at-any-time\/\">third-trimester abortion is legal<\/a><\/strong><\/b>\u00a0in selected circumstances in all 50 states, while eight states\u2014Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state\u2014allow abortion up until the point of birth for any reason whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In fact, directly following up the Eekoff\u2019s inspiring story, Good Morning America\u2019s chief women\u2019s health correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton accidentally referred to Ruby as a \u201cbaby\u201d before quickly correcting course and euphemistically cas a \u201cfetus\u201d\u2014which itself is a Latin term meaning, &#8220;offspring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cNormally what we tell people is, \u2018First, you have to learn how your baby\u2014your fetus\u2014is moving,\u2019\u201d Ashton, a fellow at the pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said. \u201cEvery fetus has a different activity level in utero just like they do when they\u2019re on the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 300;\">While baby Ruby\u2019s story is cause for unqualified celebration, it\u2019s also cause for reflection and repentance on behalf of a society that hides behind terms like \u201cfetus\u201d to take the lives of babies even at the latest stage of development.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note:\u00a0<\/em>This article originally appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/how-an-app-saved-baby-ruby-s-life-at-33-weeks\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a> on June 30, 2017, and is reprinted here with permission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pregnancy Help News &#8211; Thrilling news out of Iowa, where Jeremy and Emily Eekoff (pictured with their children Liam and Ruby) are settling into life with their second child.
