Oh, this oughta be good.<\/p>\n

Christine Grimaldi of the pro-abortion<\/a> propaganda mill Rewire reports<\/a> that Democrat Senator Patty Murray is very, very concerned<\/em> that several of President Donald Trump\u2019s appointees have a history of spreading \u201canti-choice misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murray circulated a staff memo<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0singling out Trump\u2019s picks of prominent pro-lifers Charmaine Yoest<\/a> and Teresa Manning<\/a> for prominent roles in the Department of Health and Human Services. The supposed \u201cmisinformation\u201d Murray claims they’re responsible for? Here’s the list:<\/p>\n

1. Abortion-breast cancer link<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murray points out that Yoest \u201cbelieves that abortion increases a woman\u2019s risk of breast cancer,\u201d citing \u201cresearch by the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologist[s].\u201d Murray\u2019s memo claims this is false because the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say so, but offers no refutation of AAPLOG\u2019s work<\/a>. But as Live Action readers may recall, I addressed the breast cancer link (and the credibility of NCI and ACOG) in extensive detail here<\/a>, and as it happens, pro-life researcher extraordinaire Michael New just defended<\/a> Yoest on this point:<\/p>\n

Scholars who supported the abortion\u2013breast cancer link were not invited to make formal presentations at the [2003] NCI workshop. Furthermore, the new research that was presented at this workshop was neither available to other researchers nor peer-reviewed.<\/p>\n

[Washington Post \u201cfact-checker\u201d Michelle Ye He] Lee does find plausible the arguments put forth by AAPLOG and BCPI that, due to changes in hormone production and breast-tissue development during pregnancy, late-term abortions may increase the risk of breast cancer. Indeed, a substantial body of empirical research supports this finding. Skeptics of the abortion\u2013breast cancer link argue that the 1997 New England Journal of Medicine study by Melbye, et al. is the methodologically strongest study on the topic. However, even this study finds that abortions after eighteen weeks of gestation are correlated with a statistically significant increase in the risk of breast cancer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

2. IUDs as potential abortifacients<\/strong><\/p>\n

Second, Yoest argues that intrauterine devices have \u201clife-ending properties,\u201d which the memo denies on the grounds that IUDs \u201cdo not work after implantation and therefore cannot end pregnancies.\u201d Sorry, Senator, but you\u2019re the one peddling misinformation\u2014the abortifacient potential of IUDs\u00a0has indeed been documented<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. Frequency of sexual assault<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murray alleges that Yoest once said \u201cwhen it comes to rape, women tell the truth about half the time.\u201d For the record, the actual author of the post containing this line appears to be Charmaine Yoest’s husband Jack<\/a>,\u00a0so even if this one is false, it\u2019s not evidence of Murray\u2019s premise.<\/p>\n

That said, is it false? I don\u2019t know; Mr. Yoest appears to have been citing a study referenced here<\/a> which did find that percentage (albeit on university campuses, not society as a whole). Other studies of course find drastically smaller numbers, but for what it\u2019s worth, in 2014 Slate columnist Cathy Young detailed<\/a> the myriad difficulties with accurately gauging the problem, but concluded feminists do women no favors by pretending it almost never happens.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

4. Abortion pill reversal<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yoest supports abortion reversal, which the memo suggests is junk science because, again, ACOG says so. It\u2019s an interesting definition of \u201cjunk science,\u201d considering abortion pill reversal\u00a0has a 60-70% success rate<\/a> and dozens upon dozens of babies are alive today as proof<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5. Abortion law<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murray claims Trump appointee Manning \u201clied about the guidelines for a legal abortion\u201d when she said Roe v. Wade<\/em> \u201clegalized abortion throughout the country, that is abortion on demand, for any reason, during all nine months of pregnancy, including delivery,\u201d because Roe<\/em> allows abortion to be banned in the third trimester. Seriously? This is Abortion Law 101\u2014while Roe<\/em> limits abortions on paper<\/em>, in practice its health exception is defined by Doe v. Bolton<\/em> so broadly that it’s effectively meaningless<\/a>.<\/p>\n

6. Safety of abortion facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murray takes issue with the fact that Manning called the abortion industry \u201cthe most unregulated business in this country,\u201d and said that \u201cas a result, women die.\u201d Murray’s memo declares that abortion facilities are indeed regulated and \u201cextremely safe\u201d when legal, according to<\/a> the ACOG\u2014never mind that what passes for \u201cregulation\u201d is abortion providers committing a laundry list of health violations<\/a> yet still being embraced by the abortion lobby, complete with the Supreme Court declaring a wide range of basic regulations illegal<\/em>\u2014whereas illegal abortions \u201caccount for nearly 13% of all maternal deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funny thing, though: when you actually read the ACOG page, you find out that 13 percent number is worldwide<\/em>. It includes third-world countries with poor-to-nonexistent health standards, meaning an epidemic of maternal deaths is not<\/em> attributable to back-alley abortions in the United States (and never was<\/a>).<\/p>\n

7. Contraception<\/strong><\/p>\n

Grimaldi decides to add to Murray\u2019s hit piece by hitting Manning for once saying in an interview<\/a> that \u201ccontraception doesn\u2019t work\u201d (ridiculous; she obviously wasn\u2019t literally saying it never<\/em> works, only that it\u2019s not a guarantee<\/a>) and HHS Secretary Tom Price for saying \u201cthere\u2019s not one\u201d woman who can\u2019t afford contraception (which I explained and defended here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Finally, this was an\u2026\u00a0unfortunate<\/em>\u2026 line of argument for Patty Murray to pursue, considering she has her own record of using her position to spread actual<\/em> misinformation, including claims like<\/a>, \u201cPlanned Parenthood is about providing federal funds for care like mammograms and cervical cancer screenings and prenatal care and family support and counseling,\u201d when in reality, mammograms are nonexistent at Planned Parenthood<\/a>, and its prenatal care is negligible and dropping.<\/p>\n

Murray and her ilk aren\u2019t worried about the Trump administration misleading anybody; they\u2019re worried about the American public learning the cult of abortion is built on lies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
