However, the reactions from the right side of the commentary aisle tell us something much more significant:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/g-file\/448243\/paris-climate-agreement-lifestylization\">Jonah Goldberg at National Review<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Picking sides on one of the most divisive issues of our time \u2014 abortion \u2014 may be a principled thing to do, but purely on business terms it was a bad idea [\u2026] I will say that I would have made the exact same argument if @Dog_Rates had promised to donate money to pro-life groups, a point my left-wing critics seem to have a very difficult time processing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2017\/06\/03\/rate-dogs-went-dogs\/\">Jazz Shaw at Hot Air<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s just fun and sometimes I need to get away from the screaming, blaring, non-stop DEFCON ONE state of partisan political fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Was that too much to ask? Perhaps so. But it was certainly fun while it lasted. And if Matt [Nelson, the founder of WeRateDogs] happens to wind up reading this, I\u2019m not criticizing your politics, buddy. I\u2019m giving a thumbs down to a business decision which was obviously going to damage your brand and reduce your audience. But hey\u2026 you do you, as the kids like to say.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/they-rate-dogs-dont-they\/article\/2008325\">Chris Deaton at the Weekly Standard<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hollywood is politicized, and sports is politicized, and consumer brands are politicized, and damn dog photos are politicized\u2014wherever you turn these days there are fewer exits. Is there a visible point at which the politicization of life ends? And if not, what sort of person wants a politicized life? It&#8217;s enough to make you want to take Nelson aside and ask him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freedomcrossroads.com\/2017\/05\/31\/weratedogs-will-donate-merchandise-profits-planned-parenthood-updated\/\">Conrad Close at Freedom Crossroads<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a time where everything is politicized, pictures of cute doggos are a welcome escape from politics. Dogs are something that should unite us all. Regardless of your personal views of Planned Parenthood, we should all agree that some things should remain above politics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So let me get this straight: the problem here was that Nelson got \u201cpolitical\u201d? Not that he, y\u2019know, championed a pack of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/shocking-video-abortionists-eyeball-just-fell-down-into-my-lap\/\">monstrous<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-fundraiser-tote-packed-lies\/\">lying<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amanda-marcotte-packs-a-year-of-baby-parts-lies-into-a-single-diatribe\/\">lawbreaking<\/a> mass <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/after-55000-abortions-one-baby-convinced-this-doctor-he-was-killing-human-beings\/\">murderers<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Of course it\u2019s true that politicized entertainment is disappointing. Nothing kills a mood at the movies like being reminded the hero on screen is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/callista-ring\/2016\/10\/12\/100th-anniversary-100-celebrities-who-support-planned\">villain in real life<\/a>. But that is <em>so<\/em> much less important than Nelson\u2019s real offense, like getting t-boned at an intersection and complaining that your car\u2019s paint job is ruined.<\/p>\n<p>Really? <em>This<\/em> is the part that bothers people?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen, if you\u2019ve ever wondered why abortion laws and public opinion never seem to really change that much no matter how much time, money, and effort you keep donating, I dare say these gentlemen have just demonstrated the root cause: the mindset that abortion is just another \u201cpolitical issue\u201d out of many, <em>maybe<\/em> a little more serious but certainly not on a different moral plane.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve decided abortion is morally interchangeable with any other policy, ending it becomes much less urgent. You\u2019re free to prioritize safer, more comfortable, more interesting issues and put off the pro-life cause indefinitely. Vetting judges <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/latest-trump-judicial-nominee-upsets-abortion-advocates-right-reasons\/\">requires less scrutiny<\/a>, budgetary provisions <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalistpapers.org\/us\/paul-ryans-pathetic-defense-for-not-defunding-planned-parenthood\">become more negotiable<\/a>, and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/memo-congress-dont-let-pro-aborts-use-pain-capable-bills-abortion-exception-backlash-redefine-reasonable\/\">compromise legislation to your heart&#8217;s content<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even on what pro-lifers have come to think of as \u201cour side,\u201d the higher you go up the tiers of commentary, analysis, and <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalistpapers.org\/us\/alert-mcconnell-stabs-pro-lifers-in-the-back-colludes-with-democrats\">elected<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanclarion.com\/2016\/05\/22\/gope-outraged-conservatism-indifferent-evil-44869\/\">office<\/a>, the more common this view is. Now, if this view was correct, then it would make perfect sense to see a Planned Parenthood endorsement purely in terms of business sense and brand damage, but with no moral component. After all, while it might be annoying for an entertainer to come out with the \u201cwrong\u201d stance (whatever that may be) on tax rates or environmental regulations, there\u2019s certainly nothing evil about being uninformed or mistaken on the most effective way to do good.<\/p>\n<p>However, none of the pundits I quoted would have written the above reactions if, say, a popular Twitter account had endorsed the Ku Klux Klan. They would all understand that the problem was evil, not marketing. So why on earth didn\u2019t they when their subject embraced an organization that kills <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-newly-released-annual-report-shows-abortions-increased-again\/\">vastly more innocent people in a single year<\/a> than <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/inconvenient-truth-planned-parenthood-has-more-blood-on-its-hands-than-the-ku-klux-klan\/\">the KKK did over the course of its entire history<\/a>? Is Planned Parenthood evil, or just misguided?<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is not like other issues, and Planned Parenthood is not just another wasteful steward of taxpayer dollars. The cost of inaction is violent death, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northbynorthwestern.com\/story\/are-there-really-3700-abortions-each-day-in-the-us\/\">thousands of them per day<\/a>.
