Every year during Emmy season, television shows will lobby to be nominated for an award. This usually involves spending large amounts of money, throwing parties in which show runners, producers, and the networks themselves campaign. But instead of spending money on an Emmy campaign, the cast and crew of the CBS sitcom “Mom” decided to instead donate $250,000 to Planned Parenthood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Mom” is a sitcom following single mother Christy (Anna Faris – wife of “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Chris Pratt), who is battling drug abuse and alcoholism, and her mother Bonnie (Allison Janney), who is also recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The show has been applauded for its ability to tackle serious issues while also maintaining its comedic tone. “Mom” was just renewed for a fifth season, and star Allison Janney won back-to-back Emmys for her work on the show, in 2014 and 2015.<\/p>\n

Janney appeared on “CBS This Morning” with show creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre to announce the CBS 2017-2018 television lineup, but the two also announced that there would be a massive donation to Planned Parenthood in lieu of an Emmy campaign. “It’s not a statement about the Emmys, we’d love to be included, but it just seemed like such a better way to put that money to work,” Lorre explained.<\/p>\n

Janney, who was wearing an “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” shirt, also chimed in. “It makes sense because our show is all about women, and we don’t shy away from dealing with all issues that affect women and families,” she said. “And Planned Parenthood is such an important organization that helps give health services to millions of women and families, and it’s in danger. The House of Representatives voted to defund it. And it’s such a critical time. It made sense that we stand up now and say something and encourage other people to donate to Planned Parenthood, and help this organization.”<\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood enthusiastically supported this decision, setting up a special link for people to donate through the “Mom” campaign, and sent out tweets praising the massive donation.<\/p>\n
