A video of his remarks has gone viral in the last day.<\/p>\n<p>During an April 3 talk at the University of Florida, a female student asked how he would advise a woman who\u2019s been raped and has no access to abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer is that [rape] doesn&#8217;t actually change the calculus, meaning that obviously, what happened to this person is an awful, awful horrible thing. And as I said earlier, the person who raped her should be tracked down, captured, killed or castrated. So that&#8217;s number one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as the morality of abortion [goes], the morality of abortion does not change based on need, right?\u2026The abortion argument really comes down to, \u2018do you think this is a life or not?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a life, then you can do whatever you want with it. If you do think it&#8217;s a life, then you can&#8217;t do anything with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as what she does with the baby, that&#8217;s up to her. It&#8217;s obviously going to be an obvious economic burden. I would think though that there are a lot of people out there, like me, who would give charity in order to try and help out somebody who&#8217;s obviously in that sort of situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, there are charities that exist\u00a0for people like this, to try and help out. And, if you know of this woman, tell me her name and I&#8217;m happy to give her some money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F203805062990264%2Fvideos%2F1352253278145431%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>But the student pressed the question, trying to force Shapiro to compromise for the raped victim who has no healthcare or might be in college.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro responded that student was using a \u201cmarginal case\u201d to \u201cargue broad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student agreed that if the raped victim had become pregnant through consensual sex, then she should still be able to have an abortion because, she said, \u201cit&#8217;s her body and I think it&#8217;s her health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight,\u201d replied Shapiro, \u201cso you&#8217;re giving me an exceptional case in order to prove a rule that you don&#8217;t want actually want to defend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you just come up and ask me do I think a woman should have an abortion, then we could actually have an argument or discussion about what case is an abortion appropriate. But this is what people on the pro-choice side \u2014 the anti-life side \u2014 actually do. What they actually do is they take the marginal case, they take the rapes \u2014 a woman who has a severe disability \u2014 and they say, \u2018this is all abortions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not all abortions. Significantly less than 1% of all abortions are performed on women who have been raped. If you want to talk about the epidemic of abortion in the country \u2014 over one million abortions performed a year in the United States \u2014 let&#8217;s talk about the other 99% of cases. When you are willing to agree with me that the other 99% of cases are not cases where abortion should be necessary then I&#8217;m willing to have a discussion with you about compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s what you want. You&#8217;re just using the exceptional case in order to try and guilt me into supporting a broad-based abortion platform. These are two separate issues: sympathy for the woman and sympathy for \u2013 have a little sympathy for the child. Okay? At any point does sympathy for the child coming here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou say, I&#8217;m not compromising.
