My biological mother was extremely young \u2014 barely a teenager.<\/p>\n<p><i>Single. \u00a0The stress of high school. \u00a0The disappointment of her parents. \u00a0Goals for the next few years seemed to vanish. \u00a0Judgment. \u00a0Financial stress. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>It would have been so easy for her to end my life. \u00a0Everything would have gone back to normal. \u00a0Nobody would even have to know.<\/p>\n<p>But she didn\u2019t. \u00a0She didn\u2019t end my life. \u00a0The reason I can sit here in this chair and breathe and sip my cup of tea and close my eyes and feel <i>gratitude<\/i> to the core of my being is because a scared little girl allowed me to live and grow inside of her.<\/p>\n<p>Light. Color. Sound. First breath. Inhale. Exhale. Scream.<\/p>\n<p><i>Life<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I was brought into the world at a tiny 5 pounds and 10 ounces. \u00a0The phone rang in my soon-to-be parents\u2019 house. \u00a0They got the news. \u00a0<i>Healthy. \u00a0Alive. \u00a0Blue-eyed baby girl. \u00a0She\u2019s breathing and eating and seeing and hearing and feeling. \u00a0She\u2019s alive. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cYour daughter was born today.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In that moment, a woman who lived hours away \u2014 a woman who (by all odds) never should have met me \u2014 became my mother. \u00a0She would soon become my best friend. \u00a0My safe place. \u00a0My shelter. \u00a0My home. \u00a0My family.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting back tears, she looked out the window into what would become my backyard \u2014 a stomping ground which is now full of memories from the sweetest days of my golden childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Pink roses were in bloom that day.<\/p>\n<p>This was the kind of moment that is so unspeakably beautiful that all you can do is be brave enough to <i>feel<\/i> it. There is no \u201corientation\u201d in the school of life. \u00a0There is no training course on how to handle moments like these; moments which take hold of your entire heart and change the course of your whole existence. \u00a0We just reverently stand before it in awe.<\/p>\n<p>The little details stick with us. \u00a0The smells. \u00a0How the sunlight felt on your skin that day. \u00a0The song that was playing on the radio. \u00a0The richness of human experience unfolds before us in these moments.<\/p>\n<p>The simple truth is that the circumstances of my birth have instilled in me a gratefulness and a zeal for life. \u00a0There\u2019s a <i>whole world out there<\/i> that I so easily could have missed out on entirely \u2014 and I just want to <i>touch<\/i> all of it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-163987 aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996-508x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996-508x700.jpg 508w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996-768x1058.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996-500x689.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-October-1996.jpg 1161w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>All of that being said, you would probably find it shocking that I\u2019ve actually been rubbed the wrong way by much of the conversation fostered by Pro-Life movements. \u00a0While I realize that it\u2019s tricky to generalize an entire movement that consists of many different factions spanning radically different walks of life (for instance, the differences between Catholic Pro-Lifers and secular Feminist Pro-Life groups), I am simply going to speak to my experience with the Pro-Life movement and the observations that I have reflected on for the past several years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-163988 aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996-504x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996-504x700.jpg 504w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996-768x1067.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996-500x694.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hannah-and-Dave-August-1996.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I fear that too much of the Pro-Life debate has revolved around the discussion of <i>rights<\/i>. \u00a0I mean, think about it \u2014 if you\u2019ve ever gone to the March for Life, can you even begin to count the number of signs that convey something along the lines of: \u201c<i>everyone has a <b>right<\/b> to life<\/i>\u201d? \u00a0This kind of mentality (though correct in its philosophy) is quickly rebutted by: <i>what about the <b>right<\/b> of the woman to choose?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Since when is the subject of <b>life<\/b> reduced to a discussion on the evil reality of abortion?\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The question is so much bigger than we\u2019ve been thinking. \u00a0It\u2019s not <i>really<\/i> a question of whether or not abortion should be legal. \u00a0That\u2019s not what\u2019s it\u2019s <i>really<\/i> about.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to propose that the real issue is much, much deeper than that. \u00a0It\u2019s not about abortion. \u00a0It\u2019s never been \u201c<i>about<\/i>\u201d that. \u00a0It has never been <i>about<\/i> death.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201c<i>about<\/i>\u201d life in all of its beautiful complexity, and the many complicated questions that people have surrounding what it is to be <i>alive<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>What is the meaning of my life? \u00a0What is my purpose?<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><i><b>Why<\/b> am I here?<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><i><b>How<\/b> did I get here?<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><i><b>What<\/b> is the point?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I think the nature and end of life in itself is the heart of the issue. \u00a0We as a culture have lost sight of\u00a0<i>what life is.<\/i> \u00a0If we truly grasped and understood the nature and beauty of it, the answer to the problem of abortion would be self-evident. \u00a0It would automatically be seen as the atrocity that it is.<\/p>\n<p>But people do not understand life.<\/p>\n<p>And so, people do not see abortion for what it is.<\/p>\n<p>And I really think it\u2019s as simple (and grave) as that.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s just that my adoption causes me to see the Movement differently \u2014 but I am just <i>so dang grateful<\/i> for my life, and I think it\u2019s a tragedy that we as a Pro-Life community speak so little about how <i>beautiful<\/i> life is. \u00a0We just talk about how <i>ugly<\/i> abortion is. \u00a0And that\u2019s true. \u00a0It <i>is<\/i> ugly. \u00a0But I think it\u2019s time to shift the conversation back to life itself \u2014 why it truly is so <i>cherished<\/i> and <i>sacred<\/i> and<i>worth celebrating. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes<\/i>, we should pray to end abortion. \u00a0<i>Yes<\/i>, the March for Life is a wonderful event. \u00a0<i>Yes<\/i>, I think lawmakers need to take stands against abortion. \u00a0But do not mistake abortion as being the <i>locus<\/i> of the discussion. <i>It\u2019s about life<\/i>, and the tragedy it is that so many are denied the experience of it.<\/p>\n<p>In a book dedicated to the topic of beauty, Dietrich von Hildebrand could not stop himself from talking about life as a bearer of beauty in general (1). \u00a0Life is wonderful because \u201cmany situations and events in our life are new bearers of beauty\u2026these include especially great, profound experiences, above all love\u201d (2). \u00a0The beauty of life is the \u201cbeauty of the joy that is granted to us\u201d (3).<\/p>\n<p><i><b>Life is worth giving to other people because love is worth living for.<\/b><\/i> \u00a0Love is worthy of being experienced, and being participated in by persons.<\/p>\n<p>Look out of your window a little longer today. \u00a0Hold your loved ones a little tighter. \u00a0Be gentle to yourself. \u00a0Get those flowers you were admiring at the grocery store. \u00a0You\u2019re alive today. \u00a0And that\u2019s what it means to be pro-life.<\/p>\n<p>And I just think that something so beautiful is worth talking about.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s make life about\u2026 <i>life<\/i> again.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note:\u00a0Hannah Bruckner is\u00a0a senior theology student (with a philosophy minor) from Toledo, Ohio.
