{"id":163971,"date":"2017-03-17T18:04:17","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T22:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=163971"},"modified":"2017-03-17T18:39:36","modified_gmt":"2017-03-17T22:39:36","slug":"centers-for-disease-control-reveals-more-women-dying-from-abortion-than-we-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/centers-for-disease-control-reveals-more-women-dying-from-abortion-than-we-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"Centers for Disease Control report reveals more deaths from legal abortion than we thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/03\/16\/women-dying-from-safe-and-legal-abortions\/#ixzz4bcBDEMHx\">Daily Caller<\/a>, Janet Morana of Priests for Life wrote this week\u00a0that while the Centers for Disease Control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/65\/ss\/ss6512a1.htm\">reported<\/a> in late 2016 the lowest number\u00a0of abortions in the United States since before\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the CDC&#8217;s report\u00a0also contained some disturbing news. &#8220;Women continue to die from legal abortion,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;Of course, we know this is true but the numbers were somewhat surprising.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Morana reports\u00a0the CDC&#8217;s numbers by year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012<\/strong>: <em>Four deaths<\/em>\u00a0from legal abortion, three of whom are unknown. Only one, Tonya Reaves, made headlines.\u00a0Reaves died after a Chicago Planned Parenthood abortionist (Mandy Gittler, who is <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/planned-parenthood-retains-improperly-licensed-abortionist-killed-patient\/\">now employed by Planned Parenthood in Michigan<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/autopsy-report-points-to-planned-parenthoods-negligence-in-tonya-reaves-death\/\">left\u00a0her to hemorrhage<\/a> after her 16 week abortion for five hours without medical care\u00a0without\u00a0calling 911.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011<\/strong>: <em>Two deaths<\/em> from legal abortion, identities\u00a0unknown<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong>: <em>10 deaths<\/em> from legal abortion, all unknown except for one &#8212; Alexandra Nunez from Queens, New York, who died after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/queens-clinic-a1-medicine-probed-alexandra-nunez-fatally-injured-undergoing-abortion-article-1.460728\">an artery was severed during her abortion<\/a>, leading to cardiac arrest<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009<\/strong>: <em>Eight deaths<\/em> from legal abortion, with only two identities known &#8212; Karnamaya Mongar, who <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/kermit-gosnell-ordered-pay-victims-family-4-million\/\">died after a painkiller overdose<\/a> at Kermit Gosnell&#8217;s Philadelphia &#8220;house of horrors,&#8221; and Ying Chen, who died as a result of what the OC Register <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/articles\/rutland-259905-board-homicide.html\">called<\/a> &#8220;a toxic reaction to anesthetic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008<\/strong>: <em>12 deaths<\/em> from legal abortion, all identities unknown<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The CDC report, Morana notes, does not list 2013-2016, but here&#8217;s what we <em>do<\/em> know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2013, at least two women died from legal abortion &#8212; Maria Santiago and Jennifer Morbelli. Santiago <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2013\/jun\/6\/4-maryland-abortion-clinics-shut-down-3-doctors-su\/\">died from &#8220;cardiopulmonary arrest&#8221; following a\u00a0first trimester abortion<\/a>, after being left in the care of an &#8220;unlicensed medical assistant.&#8221;\u00a0Jennifer Morbelli <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillstanek.com\/2013\/02\/carhart-patient-cause-of-death\/\">died at the hands of abortionist LeRoy Carhart<\/a> while undergoing a late-term abortion at 33 weeks of pregnancy. Carhart has a <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/leroy-carhart-needs-investigated\/\">long history<\/a>\u00a0of abortion complications and deaths.<\/li>\n<li>In 2014, at least one woman died from legal abortion &#8212; Lakisha Wilson, who <a href=\"http:\/\/operationrescue.org\/pdfs\/MedicalExaminerStatement-05302014.pdf\">died from cardiopulmonary arrest<\/a>\u00a0during an abortion at Preterm in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/li>\n<li>For\u00a02015, no deaths are currently known.<\/li>\n<li>In 2016, at least two women died from legal abortion &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/new-york\/queens\/queens-gynecologist-hit-manslaughter-charges-article-1.2826925\">Jamie Lee Morales<\/a> of Buffalo, New York (who died after blood loss from a second trimester abortion), and Cree Irwin-Sheppard of Michigan (<a href=\"http:\/\/rlmblog.blogspot.com\/2017\/03\/cree-erwin-cause-of-death-confirmed.html\">who had her abortion at Planned Parenthood<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/tragic-911-call-mom-finds-daughter-cold-ice-abortion\/\">was found dead by her mother<\/a> just days later).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on the pattern of\u00a0underestimation of legal abortion deaths, it is highly likely that more women died from legal abortion from 2013 to 2016 than we currently know.<\/p>\n<p>The media (with the exception of those in the pro-life community) largely does not report the deaths of women who die from legally obtained abortions. And this is a problem, for many reasons.\u00a0Morana writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is an overarching problem with abortion \u2013 we just don\u2019t know the truth about it. Abortion is one of the most common elective surgeries and the American public has a right to know how many women are dying, and why, from this \u201csafe and legal\u201d procedure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But the abortion industry doesn&#8217;t want the public to know that <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/abortion-safe-read-fine-print\/\">abortion carries risks<\/a>. They don&#8217;t want the public to know that many women <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/women-share-their-post-abortion-pain-and-tegret\/\">regret abortion<\/a>. They don&#8217;t want to the public to know that abortion is <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/new-video-debunks-planned-parenthoods-3-percent-abortion-myth\/\"><em>not<\/em> just a small percentage<\/a> of their business (<a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/washington-post-3-pinocchios-planned-parenthoods-3-percent-figure\/\">looking at you<\/a>, Planned Parenthood). They don&#8217;t want the public to know that\u00a0the abortion industry is <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/5-disturbing-quotes-that-prove-why-the-abortion-industry-must-be-regulated\/\">largely unregulated<\/a> (but you&#8217;d never know it, gauging from how often they complain about &#8220;anti-choice&#8221; laws, which are <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/stop-the-sham-yes-abortion-advocates-basic-health-standards-are-needed\/\">often times little more than common sense protections<\/a> for women&#8217;s health and safety).
