To any objective viewer, it was the ultimate demonstration of the abortion crowd\u2019s cult-like mentality, a clear admission that, in <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/planned-parenthood-americas-tolerance-evil\/\">its infinite cruelty<\/a>, Planned Parenthood simply doesn\u2019t care what its victims are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2yQfO1jvfbE\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course, that\u2019s not how Kevin Drum at Mother Jones saw it. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2017\/03\/sure-lets-be-honest-about-abortion\">post<\/a> inaptly titled \u201cSure, Let\u2019s Be Honest About Abortion,\u201d Drum pushes back against pro-life reactions to the interview, but in doing so only demonstrates how widespread Laguens\u2019 detachment from reality truly is.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m not on TV and nobody cares what I think, so I can say what Laguens wouldn&#8217;t: a fetus is not a living human in any sensible way. I can&#8217;t prove this. It&#8217;s like asking whether a beanbag is a chair. It&#8217;s an opinion, not a fact.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Really! Not in \u201cany sensible way!\u201d Unless you count, y\u2019know, <a href=\"\/news\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\/\">science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Do the terms <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">biology or embryology<\/a> ring any bells, Kevin? It is absolutely a fact that fetuses are living humans, every bit as much as anyone at Mother Jones (arguably more so, if you count the fact that no fetus has ever tried to deny a MJ writer\u2019s humanity). Indeed, so settled are the criteria for defining something as alive, as human, and as an organism that <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/category\/quotes\/abortion-is-killing\/\">many abortionists admit it<\/a>, as do <a href=\"\/news\/some-pro-choice-activists-admit-abortion-kills-life-i-knew-it-was-a-baby\/\">many<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/we-have-dealt-in-euphemism\/\">pro-abortion<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">thinkers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/a-fetus-is-a-human-being-says-pro-choice-author\/\">activists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ugly things that can be said about the wing of abortionism that admits what they\u2019re destroying yet rationalizes it, but you have to give them this much credit\u2014unlike Mr. Drum\u2019s gibberish, \u201cpretend it\u2019s all subjective\u201d wing, at least they\u2019re honest.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and I don\u2019t think it will come as a great shock to learn that Drum has a habit of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=climate%20from%3Akdrum&amp;src=typd\">applying the \u201cdenier\u201d label<\/a> to those who disagree with him on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prageru.com\/courses\/environmental-science\">far-less-settled science of climate change<\/a>, but apparently fails to see the irony of denying a scientific question that really does have a clear and settled consensus. Drum continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As for why Laguens wouldn&#8217;t answer, it&#8217;s not because she&#8217;s dishonest. Certainly no more so than pro-lifers who refuse to say whether women who get abortions should be thrown in jail for murder\u00a0[&#8230;]\u00a0neither side wants to make scary-sounding statements that might drive moderates away from their side.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good grief. First, most pro-lifers virtually never refuse to answer the jail question, and certainly no pro-lifer with a level of prominence comparable to a top Planned Parenthood official; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/two-major-pro-life-groups-release-statements-denounce-trumps-abortion-punishment-remarks\/\">we&#8217;ve<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2016\/04\/05\/why-pro-lifers-dont-support-punishing-women-for-abortion\/\">been<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/221742\/one-untrue-thing-nro-symposium\">answering<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/should-women-face-prison-time-for-abortion\/\">&#8220;no&#8221;<\/a> for years (boy, it\u2019s weird that Drum missed so many of those answers when he was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2016\/04\/donald-trumps-position-abortion-changes-yet-again\">blogging about Donald Trump&#8217;s comments on the subject last year<\/a>\u2026).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, he\u2019s admitting that Laguens intentionally avoided answering the question because she didn\u2019t want to \u201cmake scary-sounding statements\u201d\u2026which sounds an awful lot like dishonesty to me. But apparently in a world where the field of biology doesn\u2019t exist, there are also honest ways to hide one\u2019s true position on key aspects of an issue one is lobbying for. Wow, who knew? He goes on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In any case, it&#8217;s not as if this is a bewildering mystery. &#8220;Life,&#8221; in anything other than a technical biological sense, is a matter of human judgment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wait, I thought there wasn\u2019t \u201cany sensible way\u201d fetuses qualified as living humans. Now there is? Then why doesn\u2019t the \u201ctechnical biological sense\u201d matter? Why isn\u2019t it a sufficient standard against which to measure Laguens\u2019 non-answers? Then Drum goes off the deep end:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We decide when it starts and when it ends. Both of these are gray areas, but they&#8217;re gray areas where we set up semi-arbitrary rules: 20 weeks or viability or third trimester or EEG flatline or lack of retinal response or something similar. What other choice do we have? If you&#8217;re going to have the government involved, you have to create a reasonably bright-line rule for people to follow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nonsense\u2014the brightest line anyone could want, conception, is right there, and there\u2019s nothing gray or arbitrary about it. The real reason abortion defenders don\u2019t like it is simply because it means we <em>don\u2019t<\/em> decide when life starts\u2014observing objective reality and taking it as the starting point for our ethics is much more demanding than deciding what we want first, then shaping or ignoring facts to justify it.<\/p>\n<p>I do, however, appreciate the admission that <a href=\"\/news\/12-amazing-facts-prove-preborn-humanity-first-trimester\/\">later trimesters<\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/why-viability-is-a-meaningless-standard-for-human-rights\/\">viability<\/a> are arbitrary criteria. The more we understand there\u2019s no mid-gestation magic that suddenly turns dead cells into real boys and girls, the closer we\u2019ll be to ending this barbarism.<\/p>\n<p>Drum ends by resurrecting the \u201csave the embryo or the infant?\u201d statement to show that nobody, not even pro-lifers, \u201cgenuinely feel[s] that a fertilized egg is a human being.\u201d (Side note: \u201cfertilized egg\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeissues.net\/writers\/irv\/irv_173californiaamendment.html\">is a bit of a misnomer<\/a> for a new single-celled organism that is no longer an egg cell or a sperm cell after fertilization.) He adds nothing to this line of argument that hasn\u2019t been dealt with before, so rather than rehashing it I\u2019ll refer readers to <a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/fallacy-of-the-day-frozen-embryos-in-a-burning-building\/\">our comprehensive takedown of this fallacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Drum did perform a service here, though: he demonstrated that it really wouldn\u2019t have made any difference how Dawn Laguens handled the interview\u2014there\u2019s nothing of real value to say on abortion\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By now you\u2019ve probably gotten a chance to see Planned Parenthood executive vice president Dawn Laguens\u2019 grotesque performance on Fox News, in which she repeatedly and clumsily refused to answer host Tucker Carlson\u2019s challenges to state just how alive or human she thinks preborn babies really are.
