{"id":163832,"date":"2017-03-15T14:11:04","date_gmt":"2017-03-15T18:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=163832"},"modified":"2017-03-15T14:11:04","modified_gmt":"2017-03-15T18:11:04","slug":"nuclear-physicist-non-hormonal-birth-control-app-found-effective-as-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nuclear-physicist-non-hormonal-birth-control-app-found-effective-as-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear physicist&#8217;s non-hormonal birth control app found to be as effective as the Pill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new birth control app, developed by\u00a0nuclear physicist Elina Berglund Scherwitzl, has just become &#8220;the first internationally recognized method of non-hormonal contraception,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/03\/15\/female-physicist-creates-worlds-first-government-approved-birth-control-app\/\">according to The Federalist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/03\/15\/female-physicist-creates-worlds-first-government-approved-birth-control-app\/\">Natural Cycles<\/a>\u00a0is currently awaiting approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and\u00a0was found, in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.3109\/13625187.2016.1154143\">study of 4,000 women<\/a>, to be &#8220;93 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, meaning of 100 women using the app to prevent pregnancy, 7 got pregnant in a given year of use and 93 did not.&#8221;\u00a0This\u00a0rate is similar\u00a0to some of the more commonly used forms of contraception:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For comparison, the pill is 91 percent effective, injectable birth control is 94 percent effective, and IUDs are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/unintendedpregnancy\/pdf\/family-planning-methods-2014.pdf\">99 percent effective<\/a>\u00a0at preventing pregnancy in typical use,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/unintendedpregnancy\/pdf\/family-planning-methods-2014.pdf\">according to the CDC<\/a>. Another well-established non-hormonal NFP method called Creighton has been rated in a federal study as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8057183\">98 percent effective<\/a>\u00a0at preventing pregnancy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The app&#8217;s website\u00a0tells users to\u00a0&#8220;[m]easure your temperature, enter it into the app and know exactly when you need to use protection.&#8221;\u00a0According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/aleteia.org\/2017\/03\/07\/did-nfp-just-get-a-whole-lot-easier\/\">report on Aleiteia.org<\/a>, &#8220;A green day means the woman is not in her fertile period, whereas a red day signifies that a woman has entered the fertile part of her cycle and therefore she may become pregnant from unprotected sex. The temperature reading works because after ovulation, release of the hormone progesterone slightly raises a woman\u2019s body temperature.&#8221; The report also notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"normal\">Natural Cycles was no effectiveness slouch in its clinical trials&#8230;.[T]here were 143 unplanned pregnancies, but only ten of them occurred on \u201cgreen days,\u201d when the app told them they were not fertile.
