{"id":163705,"date":"2017-03-13T02:32:16","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T06:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=163705"},"modified":"2017-03-13T02:33:30","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T06:33:30","slug":"pro-life-hotline-reaches-23k-contacts-single-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-hotline-reaches-23k-contacts-single-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life hotline reaches 23k contacts in single month"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(Pregnancy Help News) &#8212; The numbers are in for the first full month of 2017, and they\u2019re a hopeful sign for the coming year for <a href=\"http:\/\/optionline.org\">Option Line, a 24-7 pregnancy helpline<\/a> operated by Heartbeat International.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighted by a one-day high mark of 1,360 direct contacts Jan. 2, Option Line consultants answered a total of 23,660 calls, texts, emails and live chats from women and men seeking help during an unexpected pregnancy in January.<\/p>\n<p>The number of direct contacts is the most in a single month since 2008 and the second highest in the helpline\u2019s 14-year history.<\/p>\n<p>Started as a joint venture between Heartbeat International and Care Net in 2003, Option Line answered its largest single-month contact volume at 24,000 in 2008. Heartbeat then took sole ownership of the project in 2012, and celebrated its 2.6 millionth direct contact early this February.<\/p>\n<p>February also marks a leadership transition at Option Line, with former director Bri Laycock promoted to Senior Director of Ministry Solutions at Heartbeat International and Nafisa Shamsher\u2014who has personally answered over 237,000 contacts in the past 11 years\u2014taking over as Director of Option Line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs thrilled as we are about how many women and families we can reach, we\u2019re quick to remind ourselves that our mission is to help one woman at a time,\u201d Shamsher said. \u201cWe know that the very best alternative to abortion is another person, and we couldn\u2019t be more honored than to serve that next woman who calls our number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of six ambitions of the founders of Heartbeat International, dating back to 1971, Option Line\u2019s 24-7 contact center serves as a vital connection point between a women considering abortion and life-saving help, Shamsher said.<\/p>\n<p>The goal for most conversations that start at Option Line are for women and men to seek help at one of the 2,100 local pregnancy centers in the U.S. and Canada that are part of Option Line\u2019s network. Currently, Option Line staff can schedule appointments directly at 600 local pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to an average of 650 direct contacts per at its call center, Option Line reaches 30,000 visitors every month online at OptionLine.org.<\/p>\n<p>While Option Line\u2019s mobile and desktop website versions offer prominent click-to-text and live chat functionality, the overwhelming majority of contacts still take place via phone call.<\/p>\n<p>In January, for instance, 17,000 of Option Line\u2019s 23,660 contacts were phone calls\u2014a typical ratio since the helpline\u2019s inception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter what technological changes we\u2019ve seen and adapted to, a woman who\u2019s facing so much uncertainty in an unexpected pregnancy needs to hear another person\u2019s voice,\u201d Shamsher, whose contact volume over the years has included 180,000 calls, said. \u201cNo pregnant mother should feel so alone or hopeless that she ends her child\u2019s life through abortion. Every mother should feel loved and supported during her pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One woman who called in January, \u201cJessica,\u201d had reached out to Option Line after a failed suicide attempt.
