During the annual Conservative Political Action Conference<\/a>,\u00a0senior presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway declared<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s difficult for me to call myself a feminist,\u201d because modern feminism is \u201canti-male and pro-abortion. I am neither.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can imagine how well that went over among the pro-abortion crowd.<\/p>\n

ThinkProgress\u2019s Laurel Raymond calls<\/a> Conway\u2019s version of feminism \u201ctwisted\u201d (while, interestingly, critiquing everything about her remarks except for<\/em> the abortion point). The Mary Sue\u2019s Vivian Kane attacks Conway’s speech<\/a> as \u201ca whole boatload of WTF quotes,\u201d \u201cinsufferably solipsistic platitude,\u201d and \u201cstunning misinformation\u201d that \u201cpretty much defin[es] what feminism isn\u2019t<\/em>\u201d (emphasis in the original), but also neglects to dispute the abortion part\u2014despite apparently finding it objectionable enough to put in her headline.<\/p>\n

Others did confront the pro-abortion reference but might as well have left it alone for all the substance they contributed. Uproxx\u2019s Kimberly Ricci<\/a>,\u00a0the Hollywood Gossip\u2019s Emily Trainham<\/a>, and Upworthy’s Parker Malloy<\/a>\u00a0all take the same dodge, trying to draw a distinction between \u201cpro-choice\u201d and \u201cpro-abortion\u201d\u2014in effect conceding Conway\u2019s point that supporting legal abortion is indeed a prerequisite for membership in today\u2019s feminist club. Trainham was particularly defensive, interpreting \u201cpro-abortion\u201d to mean people who \u201cspecifically love abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n

So we ask, yet again: if there\u2019s nothing wrong with abortion, then why is loving it something to be embarrassed about? Is there any<\/em> other principle or cause from which activists feel a constant need to distance themselves while championing it<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Wonkette\u2019s Robyn Pennacchia offers the longest<\/a> defense of pro-abortion feminism:<\/p>\n

Yes, feminists are pro-choice. Maybe not always for themselves \u2014 that\u2019s a personal decision \u2014 but we don\u2019t tell other women what to do with their bodies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Two things: first, the founders of American feminism (you know, the ones who fought for sex equality back when women actually were denied certain rights) unequivocally condemned abortion<\/a> using language including “a crying evil,\u201d \u201cmurder,\u201d \u201cgross perversion and destruction of motherhood,\u201d \u201cutter degradation,\u201d \u201cshameful, revolting, unnatural and unlawful purpose,\u201d \u201cawfully guilty\u201d\u2014that makes the average modern pro-life politician seem positively milquetoast by comparison.<\/p>\n

Second, it\u2019s awfully convenient that you can learn basically everything you need to know about the abortion movement\u2014its utter disinterest in whether anything it says is true, its total erasure of the baby, its nonexistent fidelity to basic science\u2014in the fact that it still routinely peddles the long-since-discredited fiction that only one body is involved in abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

If abortion is illegal, rich women can travel somewhere it\u2019s legal and have it done safely, and poor women will turn to less safe and legal measures. Personally, I don\u2019t believe you can be a feminist if you support something in effect being legal for rich women and illegal for poor women. If you really, sincerely want to reduce the incidence of abortion, try advocating for things that actually help with that, like making sure all women have access to birth control.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yeah, longtime readers know it\u2019s not the case at all<\/a> that abortion restrictions don\u2019t work or that throwing more contraception at a contraception-saturated culture will somehow sink America\u2019s abortion rate.<\/p>\n

And obviously, pro-lifers don\u2019t think the rich should be able to get abortions any more than the poor; the fact that any number of things illegal in the US could be done somewhere else with enough travel money says nothing meaningful about whether the something should be illegal here (by the way, the law has provisions<\/a> for Americans victimized abroad, and while they vary wildly in effectiveness depending on variables such as whether it happens in a cooperative country, but extending citizenship to the preborn could theoretically address such situations).<\/p>\n

One common refrain throughout the above replies was that they took umbrage at Conway characterizing pro-abortion feminism as \u201canti-male.\u201d Oh no<\/em>, they insisted, none of us want to tear men down! We only want equality! <\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Tell that to these<\/a>, these<\/a>, these<\/a>, these<\/a>, these<\/a>, these<\/a>, or these<\/a>\u00a0abortion advocates.<\/p>\n

Finally, lots of folks online are impressed with Merriam-Webster Dictionary for seizing on the story<\/a> and responding with the textbook definition of feminism:<\/p>\n

Feminism<\/em> is defined as both “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities” and “organized activity in support of women’s rights and interests.” It entered the language in 1895, at a time when efforts for women’s political equality were becoming organized and widespread in England and the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is widely being interpreted as \u201ccorrecting\u201d Conway for supposedly misstating or redefining feminism, which might be a new finalist for \u201cmost willfully obtuse talking point abortion apologists have ever pushed.\u201d Conway wasn\u2019t talking about how feminism is defined<\/em>; she was talking about how it\u2019s practiced<\/em> by those recognized as feminists by pop culture, the media, and each other. In fact, her entire point was that modern feminism\u2019s gatekeepers don\u2019t match the textbook definition.<\/p>\n

And her detractors, as abortion apologists so often do, couldn\u2019t help but prove her right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
