But as is often\u00a0the case when abortion advocates attack pro-lifers, what she identifies as \u201cbaffling logic\u201d is perfectly logical to anyone not encumbered by the prejudices of abortionism.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Hatch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/politician-uses-baffling-logic-to-justify-anti-abortion-legislation_us_58ab01a2e4b037d17d29aa5d\">took aim<\/a> at South Dakota State Representative Steven Haugaard, a Republican who has introduced legislation to criminalize abortions performed on any preborn child <a href=\"\/news\/what-science-says-about-fetal-pain\/\">capable of feeling pain<\/a> (defined at 13 weeks in the state), except for medical emergencies. Penalties (2 years in prison and\/or a $4,000 fine) would only apply to the abortionist, not to the woman seeking\u00a0an abortion. The bill has passed the state House and now must clear the state Senate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All this is pretty straightforward. So what\u2019s the \u201cbaffling\u201d part of this so-called attack on \u201cyour bodily autonomy\u201d? Hatch says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One South Dakota State Representative has defended the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-south-dakota\">already intense anti-abortion legislation<\/a> by saying that limiting access to the procedure is in no way an \u201cattack on women\u201d because, after all, \u201chalf of the abortions include the death of a girl\u201d [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Haugaard\u2019s attempt to justify limiting access to abortion to protect women and girls may be a new low. After all, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/16\/magazine\/study-women-denied-abortions.html\">limiting abortion access<\/a> directly affects women\u2019s health. The sex of the fetus is irrelevant: abortions and access to them affect women, not men. Period.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Behold the moral arrogance and intellectual emptiness of pro-abortion apologetics: you can claim the \u201cprotector of women\u201d mantle without even attempting to account for how your position kills millions of little girls. Sneering about \u201cnew lows\u201d and ending the discussion by declaring \u201cperiod\u201d are all the support you need. So confident are you that your audience isn\u2019t interested in real answers to substantive challenges, that you can go out of your way to highlight one and then not answer it.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, of course, Haugaard\u2019s point is so obviously valid and logical that it borders on tautology: <em>of course<\/em> something that kills females isn\u2019t good for females. <em>Of course<\/em> denying girls the opportunity to grow up into women isn\u2019t pro-woman. The most \u201cpro-woman\u201d spin that could be honestly given to abortion is that it benefits <em>some<\/em> females by <em>sacrificing other females<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But then, it would be kind of difficult to sell bumper stickers that honest as \u201cfeminist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So contrary to Hatch\u2019s sneering, the sex of the preborn child\u00a0is <strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;irrelevant\u201d by a long shot, not as long as her side insists on framing the abortion debate as a battle of the sexes. (Oh, and contrary to her foot-stomping insistence that abortions don\u2019t affect men, \u201cperiod,\u201d why exactly do the deaths of preborn females <em>and<\/em> males not count as effects?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hatch attempts to distract from her make-believe insistence that prenatal lives don\u2019t matter by citing a 2013 New York Times article about women turned away from abortion facilities, the heart of which is the infamous 2008 Turnaway Study by University of California associate professor Diana Greene Foster, a <a href=\"\/news\/pro-abortion-professor-abortion-survivors-should-not-necessarily-receive-medical-care\/\">radical<\/a> pro-abortion <a href=\"\/news\/pro-abortion-researcher-ignores-preborn-children-to-argue-against-20-week-ban\/\">extremist<\/a>. As many of our readers are aware, the study is <a href=\"\/news\/abortion-advocates-dismiss-women-who-suffer-after-abortion\/\">notorious<\/a> for a number of flaws, but ultimately failed to paint the harrowing picture pro-aborts hoped it would. As my colleague Adam Peters <a href=\"\/news\/not-ready-to-raise-your-baby-plenty-of-people-are\/\">sums up<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She studied women who were turned away from abortion clinics and found that their \u201cinitial and subsequent levels of depressive symptoms were similar\u201d to those who weren\u2019t. And while she contended that the former group experienced higher anxiety levels, Foster found no difference between the two after six months.<\/p>\n<p>She noted other problems, though. For example, Foster claims that those who couldn\u2019t abort were three times more likely to be below the federal poverty line. I can\u2019t say whether her findings are accurate, but it\u2019s true that a lot of women just don\u2019t feel ready to raise a baby. The good news? Plenty of people are.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adam\u2019s excellent piece goes on to detail the abundant support available to women facing unwanted or unintended pregnancies\u2014support that propagandists like Hatch have to pretend doesn\u2019t exist to bolster this line of attack. Further, LifeSiteNews\u2019s Kirsten Andersen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/what-happens-to-women-who-are-denied-abortions-95-percent-live-happily-ever\">analyzed<\/a> the original NYT piece at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here, from the mouth of one of the study\u2019s authors, Diana Greene Foster, is the answer to the title question: \u201cAbout 5 percent of the women, after they have had the baby, still wish they hadn\u2019t. And the rest of them adjust\u201d [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>Lang grudgingly admits that women who gave birth after being refused abortion do, in fact, report that they are happy with the way things turned out by a lopsided margin.<\/p>\n<p>But, lamenting that someone might further clamp down on abortion, he quotes a bioethicist who accuses those women of lying to themselves and to society.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the final analysis, the only \u201cbaffling logic\u201d here is why abortion fans would be content with such ineffective advocacy for their cause.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Huffington Post Associate Women\u2019s Editor Jenavieve Hatch is baffled.
