{"id":162115,"date":"2017-06-20T13:06:15","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T17:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=162115"},"modified":"2017-06-20T13:06:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T17:06:18","slug":"former-planned-parenthood-workers-coercion-lies-abortion-counseling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-workers-coercion-lies-abortion-counseling\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Planned Parenthood workers tell of coercion and lies in abortion &#8216;counseling&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Many former <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\">Planned Parenthood<\/a> workers have come forward saying that, in their experience, Planned Parenthood does not give women who are considering <a href=\"http:\/\/abortionprocedures.com\">abortion<\/a>\u00a0accurate information about abortion&#8217;s health risks or about their baby&#8217;s development. These former workers say they were required to try to\u00a0sell as many abortions as possible without regard for the pregnant woman&#8217;s welfare\u00a0(much less that of the preborn child&#8217;s).<\/p>\n<p>Live Action <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently released a video<\/a> featuring former Planned Parenthood employees Sue Thayer and Marianne Anderson, who\u00a0say that Planned Parenthood actually has abortion quotas. They were given incentives to push for an expected\u00a0number of abortions over a given time frame. Some of these incentives were pizza parties, awards, and lunches out. The video below shows what happens when women call Planned Parenthood to ask about their options:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/acb1KUESU6M\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In <em>The American Feminist<\/em>, a third Planned Parenthood worker reveals that she was told <a title=\"\" href=\"\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-worker-expected-sell-40-abortions-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to sell at least 40 abortions a day<\/a>.\u00a0She calls the &#8220;counseling&#8221; given by Planned Parenthood workers &#8220;emotional manipulation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The American Feminist<\/em> article describes how the worker, Annette B, <a title=\"\" href=\"\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-worker-expected-sell-40-abortions-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">witnessed an interaction<\/a>\u00a0between the clinic director and a woman who was unsure about having an abortion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On many occasions, [Annette]\u00a0saw women expressing doubts [about abortion], but observed the staff response as uniformly encouraging\u2026. Once, Annette observed the clinic director meeting with a client. To Annette, the woman was asking endless questions and seemed anything but certain about her decision. The patient kept repeating, \u201cI\u2019m really not sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Annette and the director left the interview room, the director told the staff that the patient was \u201cjust fine\u201d and ready to proceed. Annette spoke up and said she didn\u2019t see it that way. \u2026\u00a0Annette got such heat for speaking up she did not do it again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She finally asked, in a staff meeting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDo I have an abortion quota?\u201d She asked. \u201cBecause that\u2019s really what it feels like.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her employers first denied there was a &#8220;quota.&#8221; But as she argued, they admitted that\u00a0workers\u00a0were expected to sell 40 abortions a day.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about Annette <a title=\"\" href=\"\/news\/former-planned-parenthood-worker-expected-sell-40-abortions-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other former Planned Parenthood workers have written\u00a0about how the abortion counseling at their facilities was biased and manipulative.<\/p>\n<p>La Verne Tolbert, a former Planned Parenthood-New York City board member,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/former-planned-parenthood-board-member-woman-not-informed-of-abortions-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admits:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Planned Parenthood facilities] do not present all of the options, side effects, or consequences of having an abortion; \u2026 She [the pregnant woman] is assured that the \u2018wart, cyst, or tissue,\u2019 is easy to remove\u2026 Neither is she warned of the emotional or physical side effects of the procedure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Planned Parenthood withholds this information from women because they know women are\u00a0less likely to choose abortion if they know the facts.<\/p>\n<p>Another former Planned Parenthood worker,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/former-clinic-worker-catherine-anthony-adair-an-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catherine Anthony Adair<\/a>, counseled patients who were about to undergo abortions. By the time the women got to Adair, they had already paid for their abortions. Adair says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The counseling was not meant to be an opportunity to discuss the woman\u2019s decision to abort. It was merely a pre-operative screening&#8230; I never once asked what had led the woman to choose abortion \u2013 the attitude was that she was already there so she must be sure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Legally, Adair had to ask the women if they knew they could carry to term or put the baby up for adoption. But she never elaborated on those options. &#8220;[W]e didn\u2019t get into any options counseling,&#8221; she says. And neither did the Planned Parenthood employees heard in Live Action&#8217;s latest video, despite the fact that their centers claim to offer resources on all options for pregnant women:<\/p>\n<p>Adair says she also never gave women facts about fetal development:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We never discussed fetal development. The baby was referred to as the &#8220;contents of the uterus\u201d or a &#8220;clump of cells.&#8221; On the rare occasion a woman asked about the size of the baby, I would tell her it was about the size of the tip of my pencil, regardless of how many weeks into her pregnancy she was.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another former Planned Parenthood worker, &#8220;Ellen,&#8221; says she <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/former-clinic-worker-ellen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was reprimanded<\/a> for giving women information on abortion alternatives. From And Then There Were None:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Ellen&#8221; recalled her time working at Planned Parenthood. Like many others, she felt uncomfortable with her job there, but it paid the bills and offered the benefits she needed. She was hired on as a patient educator and was reprimanded for quietly giving patients information on adoption services and resource centers in the counseling rooms, because she was not pushing the sale of abortion onto women who weren\u2019t sure what they were going to do.\u00a0\u201cIt took a huge physical toll,\u201d Ellen said. \u201cI would always come home from work and cry.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lavonne Wilenken, former Planned Parenthood facility\u00a0worker, describes how Planned Parenthood workers would <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/former-pp-worker-describes-how-they-frightened-pregnant-teens-into-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">frighten pregnant teens<\/a> into having abortions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The counselor would say to the teenager, \u201cWell, where\u2019s the $250,000 that it takes to raise a child in society today?\u201d And \u201cWhat are your parents going to say when they find out that you\u2019re pregnant?\u201d And \u201cWhat is your boyfriend doing? Is he going to help you? Where is he?\u201d and \u201cHow are you going to finish your education if you have a baby? Don\u2019t you know you can\u2019t go to school if you have a baby?\u201d Things like that, very subtle things that will push the girl over and make her decide.<\/p>\n<p>Then they sort of do a \u201cMutt and Jeff\u201d routine. First will come those questions. Next will come the very motherly, the very soothing, \u201cBut we can help you. We can help you out of your problem. Your parents don\u2019t have to know. We can help you with the money. You don\u2019t have to have any money and we can help you out of your situation because we know that you don\u2019t want to be pregnant. You just want to be not pregnant and we know that you know that you can\u2019t take care of a baby right now. You know that you\u2019re not ready and we want you to do these things when you\u2019re ready.\u201d So they play on the emotions of the young girl who scared, frightened, doesn\u2019t know where to go, but she\u2019s been told this is the place to go to get help.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During her time at Planned Parenthood, Wilenken even witnessed abortion\u00a0workers commit\u00a0an abortion on a 17-year-old girl <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/former-planned-parenthood-worker-tells-a-forced-abortion-of-17-year-old\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against her will<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Planned Parenthood\u00a0facility\u00a0director\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/abby-johnson-discusses-pre-abortion-counseling-at-her-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abby Johnson says:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I worked at Planned Parenthood, we had a training program for our \u201cabortion counselors.\u201d \u00a0It consisted of three main parts.<\/p>\n<p>1. Make sure all forms are signed by the patient to relieve us of any liability.<\/p>\n<p>2. Do not discuss options with women coming in. We are there to affirm their decision to abort, not to confuse them with other options.<\/p>\n<p>3. Do not discuss any emotional or physical risks associated with the abortion procedure. We do not want to \u201cscare them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obviously, these &#8220;rules&#8221; led to more women having abortions.<\/p>\n<p>These are\u00a0just a few examples of former Planned Parenthood workers who now admit they were told to lie and manipulate women in order to sell abortions.
