Planned Parenthood and oppressive\u00a0Chinese\u00a0government institutions\u00a0have at least one thing in common: both are accused by multiple sources\u00a0of pushing abortion quotas.<\/p>\n

In 2015, reports<\/a> surfaced that in Shandong Province’s Lanling county, local government officials were being required to meet the Family Planning Bureau’s assigned quotas for abortions<\/a>, performed on women who were pregnant illegally. The local Family Planning Bureau denied the existence of abortion quotas, claiming, “We only asked\u00a0[villages and counties]\u00a0to take remedial actions to persuade women [with illegal pregnancies] who have been pregnant for less than five months to have an abortion.”<\/p>\n

However, several government officials contradicted this denial in statements to Chinese news outlets, and one official told the Global Times<\/a>\u00a0that those who failed to meet abortion quotas “would be punished.”<\/p>\n

Likewise, reports have surfaced that Planned Parenthood has required its\u00a0employees to meet abortion quotas. Following controversy surrounding an award<\/a> given\u00a0from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains to one of Planned Parenthood’s Colorado locations, celebrating the location’s increase in “abortion visits,” the abortion business quickly attempted to dismiss concerns: “Planned Parenthood does not have ‘quotas’ for any of our services.”<\/p>\n

A new Live Action video<\/a>\u00a0sheds light on Planned Parenthood’s abortion quotas, regarding both their existence and how they are implemented. In\u00a0the video, former Planned Parenthood manager Sue Thayer describes how facilities were required to meet “goals,” or quotas, for\u00a0number of abortions performed\u00a0— or abortions referred if the facility did not\u00a0offer abortions. Falling to 10% below quotas resulted in the implementation of “corrective action” plans, says Thayer.<\/p>\n

She goes on to describe some of the tactics used to pressure women into choosing abortion\u00a0— including\u00a0blatant manipulation. Planned Parenthood staff would try to persuade women who couldn’t\u00a0immediately pay for their health services that if they couldn’t pay\u00a0for health care, they probably couldn’t afford a baby and should choose abortion. And of course, they should choose it at Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n
