{"id":161884,"date":"2017-02-05T20:00:59","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T01:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=161884"},"modified":"2017-02-05T20:26:16","modified_gmt":"2017-02-06T01:26:16","slug":"hawaii-legislators-introduce-bills-targeting-pro-life-pregnancy-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hawaii-legislators-introduce-bills-targeting-pro-life-pregnancy-centers\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii legislators introduce bills targeting pro-life pregnancy centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/another-state-to-force-pregnancy-centers-to-promote-abortions\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0Add Hawaii to a growing list of U.S. states seeking to\u00a0force pro-life pregnancy help centers to promote abortion, after twin bills were introduced\u00a0in the both houses of the legislature last week\u00a0calling for the organizations to post signage referring clients to state-covered abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Mirroring a\u00a02015 California\u00a0law that compels pregnancy centers providing free ultrasound\u00a0to post signage referring their patients to state-funded abortion clinics\u2014a law\u00a0which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-bully-bill-may-be-headed-to-supreme-court-challenging-state-s-hit-on-pregnancy-centers\" target=\"_blank\">likely on its way<\/a>\u00a0to the Supreme Court as early as this spring\u2014Hawaii\u2019s proposed legislation brings the list to four states around the U.S. that are\u00a0cracking down on pregnancy help centers via mandated signage laws.<\/p>\n<p>Like the law in California, which has only been enforced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/la-city-attorney-bullies-nonprofit\" target=\"_blank\">in the city of Los Angeles<\/a>\u00a0as part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/abortion-lobby-backed-investigation-shows-pregnancy-centers-tell-the-truth\" target=\"_blank\">an ongoing crusade<\/a>\u00a0against alternatives to the\u00a0abortion industry, the Hawaii bills also hold the threat of a $500 fine for first-time offenses, plus $1,000 per additional infraction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Echoing the arguments made against California\u2019s law, the so-called \u201cReproductive FACT Act\u201d, as well as Illinois\u2019 2016 gutting of its Healthcare Right of Conscience Act, pro-lifers in Hawaii are saying the legislation violates\u00a0the\u00a0First Amendment\u2019s guarantees of religious liberty and free speech by forcing them to promote or refer for abortions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women are smart and deserve the opportunity to be informed regarding pregnancy decisions including the choice [to]\u00a0carry the preborn to term and to parent,\u201d Joy Wright, executive director of Malama Pregnancy Center of Maui, said.\u00a0&#8220;Pregnancy centers do not charge for their services and clearly relay that they do not perform or refer clients for abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the law is a mandated disclaimer that pregnancy centers would be required to post at their facilities as well as online, which reads:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hawaii has public programs that provide immediate free or low-cost access to comprehensive family planning services including all FDA-approved methods of contraception, prenatal care, and abortion for eligible women.\u00a0\u00a0To determine whether you qualify, contact the appropriate Med-QUEST division eligibility office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While a hearing on the house bill,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session2017\/bills\/HB663_.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">HB663<\/a>, is set to be followed up by a House Health Committee hearing Feb. 7, no date has been set for a senate committee meeting for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session2017\/bills\/SB501_.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">SB501<\/a>. One of just six U.S.\u00a0states with Democratic control of both legislative\u00a0houses and the governorship, Hawaii becomes the third of those states\u2014along with California and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/abortion-lobby-behind-bill-targeting-pregnancy-centers-in-connecticut\" target=\"_blank\">Connecticut<\/a>\u2014to leverage its pro-abortion agenda against pro-life pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n<p>The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals\u2014the most\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/bench-memos\/373273\/ninth-circuit-leading-pack-most-reversed-jonathan-keim\" target=\"_blank\">frequently reversed<\/a>\u00a0appeals court in the U.S.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/breaking-pregnancy-centers-must-promote-abortion-says-9th-circuit-court-of-appeals\" target=\"_blank\">upheld<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>California\u2019s law in October, but a judge in Illinois\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/illinois-judge-halts-state-s-free-speech-assault-on-pro-life-docs-clinics\" target=\"_blank\">placed a temporary injunction<\/a>\u00a0on that state\u2019s 2016\u00a0change to its Healthcare Right of Conscience Act, which would force pro-life medical professionals to refer their patients to local abortion clinics.<\/p>\n<p>Past attempts by local authorities to compel pro-life pregnancy centers to post signage either declaring\u00a0the services they do not offer or referring patients\u2014even indirectly\u2014to abortion providers have been struck down in New York City, Austin (TX),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/positive-ruling-in-baltimore-could-set-persuasive-precedent-for-free-speech-attacks-elsewhere\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore<\/a>\u00a0(MD) and Montgomery County (MD), the latter of which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/exclusive-e-mails-reveal-maryland-officials-collaborating-with-naral-to-shu\" target=\"_blank\">cost taxpayers<\/a>\u00a0$330,000 in attorneys fees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another shameless attempt by the well-funded abortion industry to leverage the\u00a0coercive power of the state\u00a0on behalf of its own interests,\u201d Jor-El Godsey, president of\u00a0Heartbeat International, a worldwide network of 2,100 pregnancy help affiliates, said. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that some, even within the Hawaiian legislature, see the promotion of abortion as an absolute good\u2014even if it costs citizens their free speech and women their choice in the midst of an unexpected pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands has not yet to\u00a0make a public statement on the legislation itself, the abortion giant\u2019s regional affiliate is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/planned-parenthood-co-suing-pro-life-neighbors\" target=\"_blank\">currently suing<\/a>\u00a0a pregnancy center in Idaho for trying to reach patients in a shared parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America and other pro-abortion groups endorsed the California law and have been major drivers in attacks on pregnancy help at the state level in Illinois and Connecticut as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was originally printed at <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/another-state-to-force-pregnancy-centers-to-promote-abortions\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a> on February 5, 2017, and is reprinted here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Pregnancy Help News)\u00a0Add Hawaii to a growing list of U.S. states seeking to\u00a0force pro-life pregnancy help centers to promote abortion, after twin bills were introduced\u00a0in the both houses of the legislature last week\u00a0calling for the organizations to post signage referring clients to state-covered abortions.
