{"id":161211,"date":"2017-01-27T14:05:25","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T19:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=161211"},"modified":"2017-01-27T14:10:39","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T19:10:39","slug":"abortion-lobby-behind-bill-targeting-pregnancy-centers-connecticut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-lobby-behind-bill-targeting-pregnancy-centers-connecticut\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion lobby behind bill targeting pregnancy centers in Connecticut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/abortion-lobby-behind-bill-targeting-pregnancy-centers-in-connecticut\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0A group of Democratic legislators in Connecticut are aiming to silence pro-life pregnancy help centers, with seven state lawmakers submitting a proposal for a bill Thursday to the state\u2019s Joint Committee on Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/2017\/TOB\/s\/pdf\/2017SB-00449-R00-SB.pdf\">proposed bill<\/a>\u00a0comes 18 months after a NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/news\/item\/480-newest-naral-hit-piece-targets-connecticut-centers\">vilified<\/a>\u00a0the state\u2019s 19 nonprofit pregnancy help centers in a 30-page accusation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoicect.org\/assets\/bin\/NARAL%20CT%20CPC%20Report%202015.pdf\">titled<\/a>, \u201cThe Right to Lie: Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Connecticut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While details of the bill are scant due to the state\u2019s legislative process, which allows general legislative goals to be proposed prior to committee vetting, pro-life advocates in the state are alarmed at the bill\u2019s similarities to state-level attacks on free speech in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/california-bully-bill-may-be-headed-to-supreme-court-challenging-state-s-hit-on-pregnancy-centers\">California<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/illinois-judge-halts-state-s-free-speech-assault-on-pro-life-docs-clinics\">Illinois<\/a>\u2014which are both being fought in court.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by state senator Mae Flexer and six members of Connecticut\u2019s lower house, Senate Bill 449 is presented as a protection against falsely advertising for healthcare services, which is already prohibited by the state\u2019s Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rather than protecting consumers\u2014or in this case, clients facing unexpected pregnancies\u2014pro-life advocates in the state are viewing the upcoming legislation as a push-back from Democratic lawmakers who lost three key seats in the state Senate during the 2016 election, leaving the state\u2019s upper house tied with 18 Republicans and 18 Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>That local loss, paired with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2017\/01\/13\/speaker-paul-ryan-we-will-defund-planned-parenthood-period-and-heres-why\/\">promises<\/a>\u00a0from President Donald J. Trump\u2019s administration and House Speaker Paul Ryan to redirect abortion giant Planned Parenthood\u2019s $550 million annual income from taxpayers to federally qualified health centers, is making the abortion lobby panic in Connecticut, says Deacon David W. Reynolds of the Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what happened here is they got stunned by the Republican dominance in the election,\u201d Reynolds, who is also a founding board member of Two Hearts Pregnancy Care Center in Torrington, Conn., said. \u201cI think [the bill] would have been much more obvious if they knew they were in full control. We\u2019re prepared for it, and we\u2019re going to fight back on it as we get more knowledge on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is part of their movement, is to slam down their competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds pointed out that\u00a0similar attempts by state and local governments to crack down on pregnancy centers by forcing them to post signage either declaring themselves to be non-medical providers or promoting abortion services have been defeated through the courts in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aclj.org\/pro-life\/nyc-crisis-pregnancy-center-settlement-cements-significant-victory\">New York City<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2015\/08\/26\/austin-forced-to-pay-pregnancy-centers-461000-after-trying-to-shut-them-down\/\">Austin<\/a>\u00a0(TX),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/positive-ruling-in-baltimore-could-set-persuasive-precedent-for-free-speech-attacks-elsewhere\">Baltimore<\/a>\u00a0(MD),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/montgomery-county-pays-pregnancy-center-375000-for-free-speech-violation\">Montgomery County<\/a>\u00a0(MD).<\/p>\n<p>While none of the pregnancy centers in Connecticut receive government funding of any kind, the nonprofits served more than 8,500 women throughout 2015, contributing an estimated $3.5 million in material assistance, ultrasounds and parenting classes to community members at no cost to taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen Cavallo, director of Carolyn\u2019s Place Pregnancy Care Center in Waterbury, said it was telling that while pro-abortion groups including NARAL and Planned Parenthood\u2014which operates in 17 locations throughout the state\u2014are opposing the options represented by pregnancy help, both groups have long opposed attempts at parental notification laws that would help protect minors from abortion and sex trafficking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-160409 aligncenter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood\u2019s location in West Hartford\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/100-abuses-planned-parenthood\/\">gained<\/a>\u00a0notoriety in 2007 by aborting the child of a 15-year-old girl who was the victim of statutory rape, failing in its role as a mandatory reporter of sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Planned Parenthood is afraid of being defunded, so I think in pro-choice states, they\u2019re really going to push the envelope,\u201d Cavallo said. \u201cIn Connecticut, they\u2019re so pro-abortion it\u2019s ridiculous, but obviously we\u2019re doing something that\u2019s bothering them, so that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As yet, no date is set for a committee hearing on the proposed bill.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was originally published at <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/abortion-lobby-behind-bill-targeting-pregnancy-centers-in-connecticut\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a> on January 20, 2017, and is reprinted here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Pregnancy Help News)\u00a0A group of Democratic legislators in Connecticut are aiming to silence pro-life pregnancy help centers, with seven state lawmakers submitting a proposal for a bill Thursday to the state\u2019s Joint Committee on Public Health.
