{"id":161185,"date":"2017-01-26T17:12:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T22:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=161185"},"modified":"2017-01-27T12:33:05","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T17:33:05","slug":"loss-us-tax-dollars-dutch-official-pushes-international-abortion-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/loss-us-tax-dollars-dutch-official-pushes-international-abortion-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"After loss of U.S. tax dollars, Dutch official pushes for international abortion fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an <a href=\"\/news\/breaking-president-trump-signs-executive-order-defunding-international-planned-parenthood\/\">executive order<\/a> barring US taxpayer dollars from funding abortion in\u00a0other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Following the move, Lilianne Ploumen, the Netherlands&#8217; Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, suggested the creation of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/25\/politics\/netherlands-trump-global-gag-rule\/\">international abortion fund<\/a> to fill the void left by the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have to make up as much as possible for this financial blow,&#8221; said Ploumen,\u00a0&#8220;with a broad-based fund that governments, companies and civil society organizations can donate to, so that women can continue to make their own decisions about their own bodies.&#8221; Of course, Ploumen doesn&#8217;t just mean decisions about their own bodies. She also means the decision to end the unique life of a different, preborn\u00a0body, but that doesn&#8217;t quite have the same ring to it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In addition to arguing against the United States&#8217; withdrawal from funding abortion organizations overseas, Ploumen makes a very broad argument against pro-life legislation in general. &#8220;Banning abortion does not reduce the number of abortions,&#8221; she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>This argument has been <a href=\"\/news\/true-or-false-banning-abortion-does-not-decrease-abortion-rates\/\">debunked<\/a> by Live Action News and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/badcatholic\/2012\/11\/how-i-lost-faith-in-the-pro-life-movement-rebuttal-up-in-hurrrrr-part-1.html\">others<\/a>, but it&#8217;s worth revisiting. Studies that have been used to argue against the effectiveness of pro-life legislation have, in many cases,\u00a0proven to be faulty and unreliable at best for several reasons. One of those reasons is that comparing countries&#8217; abortion rates\u00a0based on legislation, without addressing other factors such as poverty and cultural differences, fails to adequately prove much at all. For example, comparing abortion rates in a third-world, poverty-stricken African nation with abortion rates in the United States would clearly have to factor in more than just the law. Further, there are multiple examples of nations in which pro-life laws have\u00a0preceded a marked reduction in abortion rates.<\/p>\n<p>As Kristi Burton Brown <a href=\"\/news\/true-or-false-banning-abortion-does-not-decrease-abortion-rates\/\">reported<\/a> for Live Action News&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; [It&#8217;s] demonstrably false that countries that ban abortion do not see a decline in the abortion rates. Take Poland \u2013 a developed nation \u2013 for example. This nation saw approximately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/polandlaw.html\"><strong>130,000 abortions<\/strong><\/a> per year before the 1980s, when abortion was first made illegal. That number dropped incredibly, down to 635 a year, on average, from 1993-2004&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ireland could also be discussed here. Official numbers show that just over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/over-4400-irish-women-travelled-to-england-and-wales-for-abortions-in-2010-142753-May2011\/\"><strong>4,400 women<\/strong><\/a> traveled to Great Britain to get abortions, since abortion is generally illegal in Ireland (some exceptional circumstances lift the ban). But the number of abortions performed in Ireland itself is hardly worth mentioning, it\u2019s so small. Of course, Irish abortion supporters cry out that illegal abortions are still happening, and certainly they are. Yet Ireland has held the <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/maternal-death-rate-lowest-in-abortion-free-ireland\/\"><strong>world\u2019s record<\/strong><\/a> for lowest maternal deaths while also banning abortions. Clearly, abortion can be limited and women can be kept safe at the same time \u2013 at least in developing nations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-160409 size-full\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A 2012 Patheos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/badcatholic\/2012\/11\/how-i-lost-faith-in-the-pro-life-movement-rebuttal-up-in-hurrrrr-part-1.html\">article<\/a> makes a similar point through comparing abortion rates in various American states &#8211; a far more relevant comparison than the aforementioned third-world nation vs United States example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2007, Louisiana had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-LA.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">7.3<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. NARAL <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/louisiana.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">gives it an F<\/a> on \u201cchoice-related laws\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, Washington had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-WA.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">18.6<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. Washington\u00a0receives an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/washington.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">A+<\/a> for it\u2019s liberal abortion laws from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Oklahoma had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-OK.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">9.8<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. They receive\u00a0an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/oklahoma.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">F<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, California had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-HI.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">14.9<\/a>\u00a0per 1000 women. They recieve an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/california.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">A+<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Nebraska had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-NE.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">6.5<\/a>\u00a0abortions per 1000 women. They\u00a0receive\u00a0an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/nebraska.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">F<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, Oregon had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-OR.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">14.7<\/a>\u00a0abortions per 1000 women. They recieve an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/oregon.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">A<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Indiana had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-IN.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">9<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. They\u00a0receive\u00a0an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/indiana.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">F<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, New York had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-NY.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">29.7<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. They\u00a0receive\u00a0an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/new-york.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">A-<\/a> from NARAL.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Arkansas had an abortion rate of <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnstonsarchive.net\/policy\/abortion\/usa\/ab-usa-AR.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">8.9<\/a> abortions per 1000 women. They receive an <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/prochoiceamerica.org\/government-and-you\/state-governments\/state-profiles\/arkansas.html\" rel=\"external nofollow\">F<\/a> from NARAL&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are several more state comparisons listed in the article, proving that pro-life legislation and\u00a0low abortion rates\u00a0do frequently\u00a0coexist, despite what Ploumen and other abortion advocates would have us believe.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting tidbit here is that, while Ploumen slams the United States as unethical for refusing to fund the killing of preborn babies in other countries, the Netherlands\u00a0continues to serve\u00a0as an absolutely terrible example of life-related ethics. Regardless of one&#8217;s views on assisted suicide\/euthanasia, it would be very difficult to argue that the Netherlands&#8217; policies on these matters have not resulted in extremely unethical killings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Take, for example, the 1,040 people\u00a0who were euthanized <a href=\"\/news\/dutch-assisted-suicide-grisly-warning\/\">without their consent<\/a>\u00a0in the Netherlands in 1990. Or the killing of individuals suffering from mental disorders, including <a href=\"\/news\/euthanasia-spirals-out-of-control-netherlands-now-allows-euthanasia-alcoholics\/\">substance use disorders<\/a>. (The American Psychiatric Association publicly <a href=\"\/news\/american-psychiatric-association-takes-stand-euthanasia\/\">opposes <\/a>such killings.) Or the killing of a <a href=\"\/news\/a-victim-of-sexual-abuse-was-just-euthanized-in-the-netherlands\/\">sexual abuse victim<\/a> who also struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anorexia.<\/p>\n<p>Ploumen&#8217;s comments demonstrate a profound misunderstanding of abortion and abortion funding, and the Netherlands&#8217; hypocrisy on\u00a0human rights and ethics\u00a0is quite disturbing, to say the least.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order barring US taxpayer dollars from funding abortion in\u00a0other countries.
