This week, GQ\u2019s Ashley Fetters penned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/thanks-obama-sex\">one of the most preposterous<\/a>, but also one of the most revealing windows into the mindset of many supporters of our\u00a044<sup>th<\/sup> president: \u201cThanks, Obama, for 4 Years of Glorious, Worry-Free Sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, because how could anyone possibly have a fulfilling sex life without the state? And never mind the <a href=\"\/news\/salon-obamas-presidency-wasnt-pro-abortion-enough\/\">babies killed, conscience rights trampled, or Planned Parenthood felonies ignored under Obama&#8217;s watch<\/a>; as long as Ashley Fetters personally benefitted, nobody else matters, right?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the logic behind this narcissism? You see, Obamacare\u2019s \u201celimination of out-of-pocket costs for contraceptives\u201d (read: passed the costs onto employers and\/or taxpayers\u2014out of sight, out of mind) guaranteed \u201cevery insured woman at least one cost-free way to counteract an unwanted pregnancy,\u201d thereby ushering in a \u201cgolden age of not getting anyone pregnant by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s funny; despite never having spent a dime on birth control or acquired any for free, <em>somehow<\/em>, every time I walk out my door I can predict with 100% accuracy whether I will \u201caccidentally\u201d get someone pregnant. How? Am I just <em>really<\/em> lucky? Or maybe, <em>just maybe<\/em>, babies are made by known, conscious, easily-avoidable actions and not random chance\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Alas, this golden age may\u00a0come to a close under President Donald Trump, who has pledged to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. Fetters writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And if state-level measures like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-obamacare-contraception-idUSKBN14W1CD\">New York&#8217;s proposed mandate<\/a>\u00a0fail,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2017\/01\/make-birth-control-expensive-again\">some 55 million American women<\/a>\u00a0may have to start paying as much as $50 a month for birth control pills again (or upwards of $1,000 for an IUD). In other words, some 55 million American women may have to start choosing again between low-risk sex with men and all the other myriad out-of-pocket expenses of adult life. Anxiety-free sex, or dinner on the table? Anxiety-free sex, or the rent? For many women, these could soon become everyday tradeoffs. (And that&#8217;s not to even mention that legal abortions\u2014long a trusted escape hatch for women and couples facing unwanted-pregnancy crises\u2014could soon be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/ballot-box\/presidential-races\/296254-trump-strengthens-anti-abortion-stance\">harder to come by than they&#8217;ve been for most of our lifetimes<\/a>.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, Fetters has inadvertently undermined her own fear-mongering with that first sentence: without the HHS mandate, <a href=\"\/news\/huffpos-defense-of-abortion-access-puts-cart-before-the-horse\/\">states will still be free<\/a> to decide whether to subsidize birth control themselves. If it really is the \u201cneed\u201d she paints it as, then shouldn\u2019t there be enough people willing to vote out any governors or state lawmakers who refuse to provide it? If not, then maybe that\u2019s a sign that the majority has figured out a healthier balance between gratification, affordability, and responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Second, as I <a href=\"\/news\/open-letter-to-tom-price-about-birth-control-misses-the-point\/\">pointed out last month<\/a>, recognizing the difference between wants and needs, and making responsible decisions about what you can afford, are basic parts of adulthood. Sometimes that means prioritizing and reevaluating what\u2019s most important to you. Sometimes that means temporarily delaying wants (and sorry, but casual sex is most definitely a want, not a need). Sometimes that means making tradeoffs and trimming the fat elsewhere in your budget. (Oh, and if you still can\u2019t wean yourself off regular consequence-free sex you can\u2019t afford, at least consider shopping around for cheaper birth control options. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/12539\/gq-columnist-thanks-obama-best-sex-her-life-ben-shapiro\">They&#8217;re<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/292202\/my-contraceptive-haul-charles-c-w-cooke\">out<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/dc-target-sells-birth-control-9-month-georgetown-student-tells-congress-friends-are-going-broke-pay-pills\/article\/632955?nopager=1\">there<\/a>!)<\/p>\n<p>Third, killing innocent children is a \u201ctrusted escape hatch\u201d from pregnancy? Man, I wish pro-aborts would make up their minds whether casualizing abortion as birth control is offensive (because no pro-abortion woman would <em>ever, ever<\/em> do such a thing), or unquestionably legitimate as an exercise of \u201creproductive rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-160409 size-full\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The piece isn\u2019t a total loss, though\u2014it also contains what\u00a0may be the most honest expression of values an abortion supporter has ever typed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Obama spent his presidency fighting for every American woman to be entitled to a worry-free sex life\u2014the undersung bonus side effect of which is plenty more worry-free sex for men, too. He and his administration made a firm commitment to putting women&#8217;s minds at ease, reassuring them that kids were only in their futures when and if they wanted them. And in doing so, Team Obama also gifted you a golden era of fun, low-risk banging with your wife, your girlfriend, or the friendly gal who was nice enough to accompany you home from the bar. Because, surprise! Turns out we&#8217;re all more fun to have sex with when we&#8217;re not preoccupied with the worry of not accidentally creating babies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fun without worry. That\u2019s why babies have to die, why private citizens have to cough up money to subsidize other people\u2019s lifestyles, and why the First Amendment rights of religious people have to be trampled: so nobody has to let the thought of consequences get in the way of having a good time.
