{"id":160562,"date":"2017-02-07T11:28:18","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T16:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=160562"},"modified":"2017-02-07T11:39:30","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T16:39:30","slug":"planned-parenthoods-president-deceptive-adoption-referrals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-president-deceptive-adoption-referrals\/","title":{"rendered":"Was Planned Parenthood&#8217;s president deceptive on adoption referrals?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, who has lied about the organization&#8217;s services in the past, may have done it again with regard to the organization&#8217;s adoption services in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood supporters claim the organization provides vital health care services other than abortion in an effort to justify funding, however Planned Parenthood has been caught misleading the public about those services. Once the lie is out there, it is difficult to retract and the American public falls victim to the deception. Perhaps this was the motivation behind a statement made by Richards during an appearance on The Joy Behar Show where the CEO claimed that if the organization were to be defunded, millions of women would lose health care access to \u201cbasic family planning, you know, mammograms.\u201d Live Action\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/what-we-do\/investigations\/mammogram-falsehoods\/\" target=\"_blank\">debunked<\/a> that lie, proving that Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Live Action recently exposed the false narrative that Planned Parenthood\u00a0provides prenatal services. In a revealing project recently <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\/\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a>, Live Action called several Planned Parenthood centers to inquire about prenatal care and the use of ultrasounds for pregnant women who wanted to keep their baby. With few exceptions, Live Action&#8217;s undercover investigators were told by clinic staff that prenatal care was not provided, and ultrasounds at Planned Parenthood were not available to women who did not want an abortion. As a result of this investigation, Live Action News has <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-purges-prenatal-from-websites-after-live-action-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a> that Planned Parenthood has begun purging the term from bold text in many of their sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_WXjoqbStEM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now Live Action News has discovered that Richards may have made another false claim, this time about the organization&#8217;s so-called &#8220;services&#8221; in Iowa, when she stated that Planned Parenthood in Iowa does a &#8220;record number of adoptions referrals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The deception became public last year during an interview Richards did with Doug Wagner of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whoradio.iheart.com\/media\/play\/27368008\/\">WHO Newsradio in Iowa.<\/a> Wagner, a Conservative talk show host, cordially <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-ceo-when-preborn-humans-get-rights-not-the-point\/\">asked<\/a> Richards a series of questions about the Presidential election.\u00a0Richards attempted to explain why Hillary Clinton would claim\u00a0that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/cnsnewscom-staff\/hillary-clinton-unborn-person-doesnt-have-constitutional-rights\">constitutional rights for the preborn don\u2019t exist<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well, I think the real challenge here is abortion is a very personal issue here for folks and we work here at Planned Parenthood to make sure that every woman has all the information she needs, and access to health care. But what we&#8217;ve seen over and over and including here in the State of Iowa, is that people really believe that women should be able to make their own decisions about their pregnancies. Whether that is to &#8211; have a child, whether that is to give a child up for adoption, actually we do a record number of adoption referrals here in Iowa, or to terminate the pregnancy. Those are decisions that are best made by women and not by politicians.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To investigate Richard&#8217;s claim that the organization\u00a0does a lot of adoption referrals in Iowa, we need to explain that for Planned Parenthood, adoption (counted as an actual &#8220;service&#8221; in their annual report) is really a simple referral for an adoption. Prior to 2005, adoption referrals were not even\u00a0counted in with Planned Parenthood&#8217;s overall services. By adding this to the services totals, Planned Parenthood can further dilute the real purpose for their existence: abortion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161597\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014-700x429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014-700x429.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014-768x471.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014-500x307.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Adoption-services-PP-2004-and-2014.jpg 983w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the organization&#8217;s adoption referrals have fallen from an all time high of 11,866 in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopp.org\/PPFAReports\/PPFA1994-05010.pdf\">1994<\/a> to just 2,024 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/files\/2114\/5089\/0863\/2014-2015_PPFA_Annual_Report_.pdf\">2014<\/a>. Interestingly, as abortions and government funding increased, adoption referrals decreased. In 1994, Planned Parenthood received $163.1 million in federal dollars and performed 133,289 abortions. By 2014, federal funding had increased to $553.7 million and abortions to 323,999, reflecting 34.9 percent of the nation&#8217;s abortions overall.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood of the Heartland oversees centers in Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska and eastern Oklahoma. A review of the annual reports which Live Action News was able to obtain showed that, even though the national office records affiliate&#8217;s adoption referrals, the Iowa centers did not use the term \u201cadoption referral\u201d at all. What they do mention is &#8220;adoption placements&#8221; totaling less than a dozen or sometimes none, depending on the year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (then known as Planned Parenthood Greater Iowa) <a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/59964896-PPGI-Annual-Report-2007-PPGI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">boasted<\/a> about having a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-heartland\/adoption-avalon-center\">a local adoption agency<\/a>, and claimed they counseled 42\u00a0women for adoption. Out of that number, just four women placed their babies for adoption. In comparison, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland performed 4,397 abortions that same year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-161053\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPGreater-Iowa-2007-adoptions-annual-report-300x123.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPGreater-Iowa-2007-adoptions-annual-report-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPGreater-Iowa-2007-adoptions-annual-report-500x205.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPGreater-Iowa-2007-adoptions-annual-report.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/59965209-PPGI-Annual-Report-2009.pdf\">2009<\/a>, the Iowa Planned Parenthood affiliate recorded just three adoption placements, a drop of 25 percent from 2007. Abortions, on the other hand, increased by eight percent to 4,792.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-161052\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPHearttland-2009-annual-report-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPHearttland-2009-annual-report-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPHearttland-2009-annual-report-500x378.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PPHearttland-2009-annual-report.jpg 535w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2010Annual_Report_FINAL_web.pdf\">2010<\/a>, adoptions at Iowa Planned Parenthoods rose to seven. Sadly, abortions were also on the rise, and the affiliate recorded 5,685 abortions that year.<\/p>\n<p>The Planned Parenthood report from 2010 reads as if they were congratulating themselves on the fact that, while they aborted thousands of preborn babies, they helped only seven women choose adoption.<\/p>\n<p>But, that congratulatory move was short lived because, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppheartland\/docs\/fy12_annual_report_issuu_web?e=6481433\/2039397\" target=\"_blank\">2012<\/a> only four adoption placements had been recorded. And although Planned Parenthood of the Heartland recorded 22,885 pregnancy tests, they tragically aborted 5,832 preborn children.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppheartland\/docs\/ppheartland_fy13_ar\/1\" target=\"_blank\">2013<\/a> adoption placements weren&#8217;t even mentioned in the Planned Parenthood report. As for abortions, they went up eight percent from the previous year to 6,367.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppheartland\/docs\/fy14_annual_report\" target=\"_blank\">2014,<\/a> those alleged &#8220;record number of adoption referrals&#8221; were still elusive, and were again not even mentioned in Planned Parenthood&#8217;s report. What <em>was<\/em> mentioned was that they performed 5,970 abortions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-161029\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PP-of-the-heartland-2014-services-no-adoption-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PP-of-the-heartland-2014-services-no-adoption-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PP-of-the-heartland-2014-services-no-adoption.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppheartland\/docs\/pph_fy15_ar_-_no_names\/1?e=6481433\/32232368\" target=\"_blank\">2015 <\/a>the alleged record number of adoption referrals done in Iowa was not reported. Planned Parenthood recorded performing 5,269 abortions while there was no mention of adoption referrals.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear where Richards\u00a0is getting her information on this allegedly large number of adoption referrals in Iowa. Since the national office records adoption referrals, Planned Parenthood in Iowa should have recorded them as well. And, one could argue that, in the years that adoption placements were recorded, a much larger amount of adoption referrals could have been probable, but state numbers couldn&#8217;t have been that large when you consider that all combined there were only 2,024 adoption referrals recorded in Planned Parenthood&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/actionfund\/docs\/2014-2015_annual_report_final_20mb\" target=\"_blank\">2014-2015 annual report<\/a> across approximately 661 Planned Parenthood centers.<\/p>\n<p>But, what is clear is that out of the reports that Live Action news was able to track down (2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, and 2015), Planned Parenthood in Iowa recorded only 21 adoption placements compared to 38,312 abortions. And since 2016 numbers have not been published we can look to 2015 where adoption isn&#8217;t even mentioned in their report.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>What was mentioned was that the affiliate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppheartland\/docs\/pph_fy15_ar_-_no_names\/1?e=6481433\/32232368\" target=\"_blank\">recorded<\/a> net assets of $17,897,568 after receiving $3,094,449 in government grants. In 2015, the affiliate also sent their mothership, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), which pays their directors huge salaries, $384,799 in dues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161603\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PPHeartland-2015-Assets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PPHeartland-2015-Assets.jpg 513w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PPHeartland-2015-Assets-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PPHeartland-2015-Assets-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/PPHeartland-2015-Assets-500x508.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now isn&#8217;t money\u00a0what it&#8217;s all about anyway?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, who has lied about the organization&#8217;s services in the past, may have done it again with regard to the organization&#8217;s adoption services in Iowa.
