{"id":160499,"date":"2017-01-18T15:42:50","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T20:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=160499"},"modified":"2017-01-18T15:42:50","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T20:42:50","slug":"science-video-series-smuggles-abortion-lies-in-nonpartisan-packaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/science-video-series-smuggles-abortion-lies-in-nonpartisan-packaging\/","title":{"rendered":"Science video series smuggles abortion lies in nonpartisan packaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Lifehacker used to be one of the only sites in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/06\/10\/goodbye-and-good-riddance-to-gawker\/\">former Gawker network<\/a> free of <a href=\"\/news\/?s=gawker\">odious political propaganda<\/a> (with <a href=\"\/news\/?s=jezebel\">Jezebel of course being the worst<\/a>), instead simply providing a variety of useful information on technology, health, productivity, and a range of other areas.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, on Monday they <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/here-s-what-actually-happens-when-you-have-an-abortion-1791252647\">ran a piece<\/a> promoting a\u00a0video (below) by ASAP Science, and while it\u2019s billed as simply informative\u2014it supposedly \u201ccorrects some misconceptions\u201d and \u201cmyths\u201d surrounding abortion \u201cyou may have picked up along the way\u201d\u2014from the start, it obscures more than it illuminates, then goes on to perpetuate myths, and by the end it drops the veneer of impartial education in favor of open pro-abortion advocacy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vWKqeJxzeBc\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first point of interest is the statement that \u201c92% of legal US abortions take place within the first 13 weeks of gestation.\u201d While at first glance that sounds like we should infer later-term abortions are a small issue, note well that eight percent of <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/issues\/report-u-s-abortion-rate-falls-lowest-level-since-row-v-wade\/\">one million<\/a>\u00a0(the approximate annual number of abortions in the U.S.) is still <em>eighty thousand children killed<\/em>\u2014almost nine times the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/child-health.htm\">total number of children from age 1-14 who die annually<\/a>, and five times the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/stories\/latest-crime-statistics-released\">total number of murders in 2015<\/a>. Does that sound like a big deal to you?<\/p>\n<p>That said, ASAP Science missed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/prenatal-summary.php\">a few scientific facts<\/a> that would have been more helpful in developing an informed opinion on abortion, like that a heartbeat begins at 5 weeks, reaction to stimuli is observed as early as 7.5 weeks, and brainwaves are measurable by week 8.5. So if we\u2019re supposed to infer that killing fetuses younger than 13 weeks is less consequential than killing older, more \u201cbaby-like\u201d fetuses, the reality is that abortion\u2019s victims already possess some of living humans\u2019 most defining characteristics beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the video describes several abortion procedures in a mostly neutral way, with the exception of one major recurring euphemism: \u201cremove the contents of the uterus.\u201d Hmm, I wonder what \u201cthe contents\u201d are? Undifferentiated cells? Phlegm? Pez?<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the emptying isn\u2019t the objectionable part of abortion. (Childbirth <a href=\"https:\/\/prolifeaction.org\/2016\/termination\/\">also<\/a> \u201cremoves the contents of the uterus.\u201d) What happens to \u201cthe contents\u201d during the removal? ASAP Science doesn\u2019t say. Because admitting that they\u2019re talking about the induced death of a <a href=\"\/news\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\/\">living<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/40-quotes-from-medical-experts-that-prove-human-life-begins-at-conception\/\">human<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">being<\/a> would undermine the video\u2019s gentle marker-and-whiteboard aesthetic and tip viewers off to the fact that what they\u2019re trying to sanitize isn\u2019t so sanitary after all.<\/p>\n<p>The euphemism \u201cremove\u201d is even more objectionable in the video\u2019s description of D&amp;C (dilation &amp; curettage) and D&amp;E (dilation &amp; evacuation, AKA dismemberment) abortions. It describes curettes, forceps, and vacuum aspiration as being used for removal, when in reality that \u201cremoval\u201d consists of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nucleuscatalog.com\/suction-and-curettage-abortion-of-a-9-week-old-fetus\/view-item?ItemID=11041\">tearing<\/a> the fetus\u2019s body <a href=\"\/news\/naral-calls-kansas-abortion-dismemberment-ban-medically-inaccurate\/\">apart<\/a>. For a more honest and productive video on the subject than ASAP Science\u2019s, check out this video, narrated by former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it for anything with even the pretence of science; the rest of ASAP \u201cScience\u2019s\u201d presentation is pure propagandizing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The decision to have an abortion after 24 weeks is extremely rare and often due to severe fetal anomalies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, \u201crare\u201d here still means <a href=\"\/news\/yes-there-is-such-a-thing-as-abortion-in-the-ninth-month\/\">13,000 children<\/a> killed per year. Second, the conclusion that they\u2019re mostly for \u201csevere fetal anomalies\u201d isn\u2019t where the evidence would have lead a truly objective project. Last year, FactCheck.org\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2015\/09\/clinton-off-on-late-term-abortions\/\">concluded<\/a>, \u201cthere is no definitive information as to how many of those abortions are due to medical necessity,\u201d but there is <a href=\"\/news\/washington-post-gets-fact-check-on-trumps-9-month-abortion-answer-wrong\/\">anecdotal evidence<\/a> that the truth is the opposite\u2014according to D&amp;X (partial-birth) abortion creator Martin Haskell and late-term abortionist George Tiller, only one in five,\u00a0<em>or fewer<\/em>, late-term abortions are done for complications to either mother or child\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>The video next reinforces myths about abortion\u2019s safety, claiming \u201cthe risk of death associated with childbirth is 14 times higher in women than that of an abortion,\u201d and that abortion\u2019s links to breast cancer, difficulties in conceiving later, and future pregnancy complications \u201chave been refuted by extensive medical research.\u201d Longtime Live Action readers know we\u2019ve debunked these\u00a0lies on numerous occasions; you can <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-narals-lies-about-crisis-pregnancy-centers-part-two\/\">get the facts here<\/a>. The video goes on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Laws that limit a woman\u2019s access to an abortion or make abortion illegal do not reduce the number of abortions. Countries where abortions are illegal have roughly the same number of abortions; what changes instead is the incidence of unsafe abortions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The citation for this claim is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/12\/world\/12abortion.html\">old New York Times piece from 2007<\/a>, which was also the basis for an infamous bit of pro-abortion propaganda Live Action addressed back in 2012, including <a href=\"\/news\/true-or-false-banning-abortion-does-not-decrease-abortion-rates\/\">Kristi Burton Brown&#8217;s rebuttal<\/a> to this particular claim. Citing Poland and Ireland as examples, she showed that abortion prohibition did significantly cut those countries\u2019 abortion rates, and that varying medical standards, not prohibition, was the real culprit behind abortion deaths. Another of the video&#8217;s claims:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A 2011 study did find that state level anti-abortion laws and Texas correlated with the lower abortion rates in the state, but these results did not account for women traveling to other states with less restrictive laws to receive a procedure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1532440010387397\">study<\/a> they\u2019re referencing was authored by none other than pro-life research extraordinaire Michael New, who Live Action regulars know is not one to overlook relevant variables. And while he only mentioned out-of-state travel in passing in this particular analysis, he did mention it\u2014as part of explaining the variables he incorporated, he noted that \u201creductions in the number of abortion providers would increase the monetary and travel costs involved with obtaining an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a helpful reminder that pro-aborts can\u2019t keep their story straight: is traveling hundreds of miles to get an abortion so expensive that it makes abortion restrictions cruel and unusual punishment, or so cheap and easy that pro-life states might as well not bother? In any event, ASAP Science\u2019s point is a red herring because abortion laws varying from state to state isn\u2019t the pro-life movement\u2019s end goal anyway; nationwide abolition is.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, as Secular Pro-Life <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.secularprolife.org\/2017\/01\/debunking-latest-pro-abortion-science.html\">points out<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The better method is to compare abortion numbers\u00a0in the same country\u00a0both before and after laws are passed. Pro-choicers never do this, because the results don&#8217;t go their way. As the\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0(not known for supporting the right to life) acknowledges, the U.S. abortion rate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2014\/01\/22\/thirteen-charts-that-explain-how-roe-v-wade-changed-abortion-rights\/?utm_term=.2351bd9915e1\">increased significantly<\/a>\u00a0following\u00a0Roe v. Wade.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The video closes with the obligatory ode to \u201csex education and access to contraceptive methods\u201d as the real silver bullets to reduce abortions (<a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-employees-profanity-laden-rant-hyped-raw-story\/\">no<\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/guttmacher-doctored-data-boost-planned-parenthoods-contraception-push\/\">no<\/a>), dropping the educational mask entirely by declaring \u201caccess to legal abortions make women safer and healthier,\u201d and advertising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Vozr9vHeMo&amp;feature=youtu.be\">another of their videos<\/a>, which makes the case that Plan B isn\u2019t abortive based on the following statement, which is amazing for all the wrong reasons:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No studies have shown an effect from emergency contraception if fertilization has already occurred. It does not stop implantation from happening nor does it have any effect after implantation has occurred.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>No studies? That\u2019s funny, because in one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/389920\/yes-plan-b-can-kill-embryos-donna-harrison\">most detailed examinations of the question around<\/a>, Dr. Donna Harrison cited quite a few studies showing that it most certainly can kill embryos:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If LNG is given one to two days before the egg is due to be released, then egg release is not reliably prevented (see<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+2001%3B+63%3A123-129\">\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+82+(2010)+404%E2%80%93409\">here<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+70+(2004)+442%E2%80%93+450\">here<\/a>). In fact, in several studies of women who received LNG as an emergency contraceptive during the time immediately before ovulation, ovulations were documented but no pregnancies occurred (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+64+(2001)+227%E2%80%93234\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+75+(2007)+112%E2%80%93+118\">here<\/a>) [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>When ovulation does occur after LNG has been given, most of those ovulations show luteal-phase defect (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+70+(2004)+442%E2%80%93+450\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+64+(2001)+227%E2%80%93234\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+69+(2004)+373%E2%80%93377\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Human+Reproduction+Vol.22%2C+No.2+pp.+434%E2%80%93439%2C+2007\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+81+(2010)%3A414-20\">here<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Contraception+70+(2004)+442%E2%80%93+450\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the term for when the ovary does not produce enough progesterone to allow the embryo to survive. If the LH surge is blunted \u2014 that\u2019s an interference at step 3, above \u2013\u00a0then the ovary will release the egg, which can be fertilized but not produce enough progesterone for steps 6, 7, and 8.\u00a0So, the embryo formed would not survive long enough to produce a positive pregnancy test.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the final analysis, denying the very existence of so much real scientific research is the perfect encapsulation of the abortion lobby\u2019s phony monopoly on science.
