{"id":16018,"date":"2016-09-01T18:45:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T22:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/?p=16018"},"modified":"2016-09-01T18:45:57","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T22:45:57","slug":"statement-from-lila-rose-planned-parenthood-bill-jails-msm-journalists-who-record-undercover-footage-of-abuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/statement-from-lila-rose-planned-parenthood-bill-jails-msm-journalists-who-record-undercover-footage-of-abuses\/","title":{"rendered":"Statement from Lila Rose:  Planned Parenthood bill jails MSM journalists who record undercover footage of abuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><div>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><b>&#8211; Amended bill does NOT shield media from prosecution &#8211;<\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">ARLINGTON, VA (<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_826265762\"><span class=\"aQJ\">September 1, 2016<\/span><\/span>) \u2014 Late last night, the California Senate passed a Planned Parenthood-backed bill that makes it a crime for investigative journalists and others to secretly record and distribute undercover footage of conversations of abortion workers.\u00a0 Planned Parenthood could attempt to pass similar bans in other states.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The bill was amended <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_826265763\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Tuesday<\/span><\/span> to exclude media outlets from prosecution if they only distribute footage.\u00a0 However, if they record the undercover footage themselves, they can be prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><b>Following is a statement from Lila Rose, president and founder of national pro-life organization<a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/liveaction.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1472833358938000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFzE5GWomkcHEA9RgXyl3dyvO_rdA\"> Live Action<\/a>:<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cFor years, investigative journalists have recorded and exposed Planned Parenthood facilities across the country<a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/traffick\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/liveaction.org\/traffick\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1472833358938000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHJ93bNSVHS_fDTnBH5QThJSXQS0w\"> covering up for sex traffickers<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/monalisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/liveaction.org\/monalisa\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1472833358938000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEFtovSGpU8TvI4ywEvpkTRMISJbg\"> failing to report child sexual abusers<\/a>, and trafficking in baby body parts. Instead of being compelled to be more transparent with the public, taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood wants to jail journalists and whistleblowers who record and distribute footage that shows it potentially breaking the law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe California Newspaper Publishers Association &#8212; not an organization that\u2019s necessarily sympathetic to the pro-life cause \u2013 said even the newly amended version of the bill still &#8216;potentially criminalizes speech.\u2019 Planned Parenthood is brazenly attacking the First Amendment, aided and abetted by California legislators who are protecting a major campaign donor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhen the public funds half of Planned Parenthood\u2019s operations, it has a right to know that its money isn\u2019t being used to break the law or commit abuses, and governments should be taking steps to make things more transparent, not less.\u00a0 Americans understand that abortion is a grave act, and with Planned Parenthood committing over 320,000 abortions each year, investigative journalists and whistleblowers have been the ones exposing the many abuses that often accompany it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis bill doesn\u2019t protect women;
