In light of news that <a href=\"\/news\/speaker-paul-ryan-announces-plans-to-defund-planned-parenthood\/\">Congress\u00a0has\u00a0plans to defund Planned Parenthood,<\/a>\u00a0New York Magazine&#8217;s Dayna Evans\u00a0is claiming that &#8220;correcting&#8230; myths&#8221; about Planned Parenthood &#8220;and bolstering supporters with valuable information is more important than ever.&#8221; However, Evans&#8217; &#8220;handy guide&#8221; of\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2017\/01\/misconceptions-about-planned-parenthood.html?mid=fb-share-thecut\">9 Things People Get Wrong About Planned Parenthood<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0is wrong in several areas, beginning in her introduction, where she claims Planned Parenthood isn&#8217;t involved in the trafficking of fetal body parts, despite a Congressional committee&#8217;s <a href=\"\/news\/breaking-congressional-panel-releases-final-report-late-term-abortion-industry\/\">investigation<\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/senate-judiciary-committee-refers-planned-parenthood-for-fbi-investigation\/\">recommendation<\/a> of Planned Parenthood for <a href=\"\/news\/congressional-panel-refers-planned-parenthood-gulf-coast-criminal-prosecution\/\">criminal prosecution<\/a> for this issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Evans&#8217; first point is this: &#8220;<strong>FALSE: <\/strong><b>Abortion is the most popular service that Planned Parenthood provides.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While Evans acknowledges pro-lifers&#8217; concerns with Planned Parenthood, she doesn&#8217;t bother debunking the oft-repeated claim that abortion accounts for only three percent of Planned Parenthood&#8217;s services. Live Action <a href=\"\/news\/new-video-debunks-planned-parenthoods-3-percent-abortion-myth\/\">has explained<\/a> why this claim\u00a0is wrong:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To arrive at the 3 percent figure, Planned Parenthood divides the number of abortions by the number of services the facilities provide. These services, which include STI testing, pregnancy tests, pap smears, breast exams, birth control, and others, are counted\u00a0equally with an abortion procedure.\u00a0So even\u00a0though\u00a0abortion is much more profitable for\u00a0Planned Parenthood, an abortion procedure is calculated as equivalent to a pregnancy test or contraception.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qtgqxvaV-8U\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But it isn&#8217;t just pro-lifers who have pointed out the sketchiness of this statistic. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/05\/07\/_3_percent_of_planned_parenthood_s_services_are_abortion_but_what_about.html\">piece<\/a> from Slate editor Rachel Larimore referred to it\u00a0as &#8220;the most meaningless abortion statistic ever.&#8221; The Washington Post, which has similar pro-abortion leanings, <a href=\"\/news\/washington-post-3-pinocchios-planned-parenthoods-3-percent-figure\/\">has given this claim<\/a> &#8220;three pinocchios.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Evans tries to emphasize Planned Parenthood&#8217;s\u00a0number of\u00a0contraception services and STI\/STD testing and treatment, at 31 percent and 45 percent respectively. But what she doesn&#8217;t say is that Planned Parenthood&#8217;s <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthoods-birth-control-figures-draw-scrutiny\/\">contraception services have been on the decline<\/a>, just like the organization&#8217;s <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-health-care-services-declined-in-2014-while-taxpayer-funding-increased\/\">other legitimate health care services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One hardly needs to look further than <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortionist-more-abortions-more-money\/\">the existence of abortion quotas<\/a> at Planned Parenthood (as revealed by former Planned Parenthood director turned pro-life advocate Abby Johnson)\u00a0than to understand Planned Parenthood indeed has an abortion business model. An overwhelming majority of pregnant women who visit Planned Parenthood do so for abortions &#8212; after all, Planned Parenthood\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-commits-one-abortion-every-97-seconds\/\">performs one abortion every 97 seconds<\/a>.\u00a0And\u00a0affiliates <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-patient-they-dont-help-pregnant-women-who-want-to-keep-their-baby\/\">aren&#8217;t exactly\u00a0willing<\/a>\u00a0to help pregnant women who want to keep their babies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Evans also sees the need to debunk the &#8220;myth&#8221; that<b> &#8220;Planned Parenthood only provides services to women.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First of all, who is claiming this? If anyone is presenting the idea that Planned Parenthood is strictly about &#8216;women&#8217;s healthcare,&#8217; it&#8217;s Planned Parenthood!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Evans also seems to think there&#8217;s a\u00a0myth out there that<strong> &#8220;<\/strong><b>Planned Parenthood is just for wealthy women, so they\u2019ll find health care elsewhere if it were to be shut down<\/b><strong>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Again, who is claiming that Planned Parenthood is for &#8220;wealthy women&#8221;? I&#8217;m not aware of anyone making this assertion. Planned Parenthood boasts about serving\u00a0those of middle to lower socioeconomic statuses, but an abortion provider shouldn&#8217;t have a monopoly on providing care for anyone, whether wealthy or not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Earlier this month, <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-desperate-to-hold-onto-taxpayer-funding-heres-why-they-dont-deserve-it\/\">Live Action News published<\/a> a selection of comments people made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rebecca.rose.downs\/posts\/10155813724335620\">on my personal Facebook page<\/a> of telling\u00a0why Planned Parenthood should be defunded. &#8220;<span class=\"UFICommentBody\">Just because we are poor or uninsured it doesn\u2019t mean we should be forced to go to an abortion provider for our healthcare,&#8221; shared Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, the founder and president of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newwavefeminists.com\/\">New Wave Feminists<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\">While Evans portrays Federally Qualified Health Centers as inferior to Planned Parenthood, t<\/span>hese FQHCs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/health-clinics-nationwide-compared-to-planned-parenthood-centers\/\">outnumber the abortion giant in number of locations<\/a>\u00a0and in providing comprehensive care for the whole family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Abortion, however, is\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>healthcare; it deliberately takes a human life and\u00a0it\u00a0is not medically necessary to save a woman&#8217;s life,\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/dublin-declaration-abortion-is-not-medically-necessary\/\">as affirmed by doctors who signed the Dublin Declaration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> Evans also makes this assertion:\u00a0&#8220;<b>FALSE: Defunding Planned Parenthood would be good for taxpayers.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nowhere does Evans\u00a0even acknowledge that there are Americans who don&#8217;t want their hard-earned dollars going to a scandal ridden organization which is associated\u00a0with abortion. She does not acknowledge that defunding would be\u00a0a good move for conscience protections. Instead, she focuses on concerns that the cost of Medicaid would go up, and refers to Planned Parenthood&#8217;s services as &#8220;necessary and low-cost health care,&#8221; as if it were the only entity providing such services, including contraception. If Evans and other pro-abortion media outlets are concerned\u00a0with the rise of Medicaid spending, perhaps they should look into\u00a0all <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/profit-no-matter-what\/\">the Medicaid fraud<\/a>\u00a0involving Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0Evans lists as &#8220;false&#8221; the claim that &#8220;<b>Teenagers are being indoctrinated by Planned Parenthood to have sex at a young age.&#8221; <\/b>However&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8230; Evans does not actually debunk this at all. She just gushes about the sex education Planned Parenthood provides. Live Action has documented through <a href=\"http:\/\/plannedparenthoodexposed.com\/sexed\/\">investigation videos<\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-bad-teens-parents\/\">articles<\/a>, Planned Parenthood gives\u00a0dubious sex advice to\u00a0minors. It <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-ignores-facts-teaches-young-children-sexual\/\">pays for Planned Parenthood<\/a>\u00a0to get teens hooked on sex, because it\u00a0creates customers for contraception or even abortion. In discussing sex education in general, Evans claims that &#8220;providing young people with access to sex education is not correlated to an increase in sexual risk-taking.&#8221; She fails to note that <a href=\"\/news\/researchers-free-condoms-actually-increase-teen-pregnancy-rates\/\">researchers<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/surprise-condoms-may-actually-increase-teen-pregnancy\/\">found<\/a> providing condoms to students increased teen pregnancies. Her comment that\u00a0&#8220;services offered to teens of all ages are confidential&#8221; is particularly concerning, considering Planned Parenthood opposes parental involvement &#8212; even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/planned-parenthood-happy-to-help-minors-obtain-abortions-without-parents-knowledge\/\">notification and consent laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Another puzzling &#8220;myth&#8221; Evans lists is that &#8220;<b>Planned Parenthood is only available to cis-identifying patients.<\/b>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Again, who actually believes this? Planned Parenthood has been quite vocal about its support for the LGBT community. That such &#8220;myths&#8221; are included causes me to wonder\u00a0if Evans is just making up issues to &#8216;debunk&#8217; in order to produce a promotional piece for\u00a0the abortion giant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-160409\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DefundAd-400b-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>7.\u00a0<\/strong>Evans is worried people think that &#8220;<b>Planned Parenthood could survive on private donors alone,&#8221; <\/b>but&#8230;<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Planned Parenthood is the one\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/if-donations-flooding-into-planned-parenthood-maybe-they-dont-need-tax-dollars\/\">bragging about private donations they&#8217;ve received, especially following the 2016 election<\/a>. In addition to crying over federal funding which hasn&#8217;t even been lost yet, the organization <a href=\"\/news\/need-help-from-planned-parenthood-be-prepared-to-donate\/\">preys on women&#8217;s fears in order to get these private donations<\/a>. Evans cites (with emphasis added) the &#8220;<em>only <\/em>$353 million a year&#8221; Planned Parenthood made in private donations, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/files\/2114\/5089\/0863\/2014-2015_PPFA_Annual_Report_.pdf\">the organization&#8217;s 2014-2015 annual report<\/a>. &#8220;Without federal funding, Planned Parenthood would have little chance of survival,&#8221; Evans laments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Defunding Planned Parenthood does not mean that Big Government would bar Planned Parenthood from ever operating again. It means the organization will have to operate on its own two feet, as plenty of others already do, in order to survive, and fund itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>8.<\/strong> Evans believes people think\u00a0&#8220;<b>Planned Parenthood only provides services to Americans.<\/b>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While Evans is right to point out the international work\u00a0of Planned Parenthood, pro-lifers have been exposing the abortion giant in this way. When Planned Parenthood President and CEO Cecile Richards <a href=\"http:\/\/redalertpolitics.com\/2015\/09\/29\/blum-planned-parenthood-ceo-ignorant-orgs-finances\/\">testified before the House Oversight Committee in September 2015<\/a>, the committee raised questions about which countries and overseas organizations received funds. Of particular concern is Planned Parenthood&#8217;s involvement with China. Women&#8217;s Rights Without Frontiers late last year <a href=\"\/news\/womens-rights-group-calls-for-investigation-of-international-planned-parenthood\/\">called for<\/a>\u00a0an <a href=\"\/news\/womens-rights-org-investigate-international-planned-parenthood-partnership-china\/\">investigation<\/a> of International\u00a0Planned Parenthood, especially since <a href=\"\/news\/deadly-cooperation-planned-parenthood-and-chinas-one-child-policy\/\">the organization supports<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-and-chinas-one-child-policy-part-2\/\">China&#8217;s One-Child Policy<\/a>\u00a0and has been a known partner of the Chinese government in the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">9. Evans claims it is\u00a0&#8220;false&#8221; that<strong> &#8220;t<\/strong><b>here will be thousands of <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/09\/28\/fact-check-yes-women-can-go-elsewhere-if-planned-parenthood-closes\/\" target=\"_blank\">other clinics available<\/a> to women should Planned Parenthood be defunded.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This, as I&#8217;ve already pointed out, is far from the truth. Evans fails to point out that Planned Parenthood <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-can-be-replaced-health-clinics-outnumber-them-20-to-1\/\">is outnumbered by federally qualified health centers 20 to 1<\/a>. She mentions<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/publicly-funded-family-planning-services-united-states\"> the Guttmacher Institute<\/a> and claims\u00a0that 103 of the 491 counties with Planned Parenthood facilities would have no other places for people to access affordable contraception. The <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/09\/28\/fact-check-yes-women-can-go-elsewhere-if-planned-parenthood-closes\/\">Federalist article<\/a> Evans cites actually disproves her claim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Overall, Evans&#8217; attempt at setting the record straight on Planned Parenthood did nothing of the sort.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They call it &#8220;standing with&#8221; Planned Parenthood, but what the abortion giant&#8217;s\u00a0supporters and the media do is more along the lines of\u00a0covering up.
