It’s been seven years since Mike Hermanstorfer spent\u00a0Christmas Eve in\u00a0the\u00a0hospital.\u00a0Mike and his wife Tracy were\u00a0at Memorial Hospital in\u00a0Colorado Springs so Tracy\u00a0could deliver their baby boy, Coltyn.\u00a0The mom of two expected\u00a0a routine delivery, just like she had with her other children.\u00a0As her\u00a0monitors were being changed,\u00a0Tracy shockingly\u00a0went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. Stephanie Martin, the director of fetal medicine at Memorial Hospital remembers that grave moment. She told<\/a> KKTV, “She was dead. She had no heartbeat, no breathing. She was as gray as her sweat suit, no signs of life.”<\/p>\n

Doctors tried to resuscitate Tracy but to no avail. Then, in an effort to save the life of her preborn baby, they did an emergency Cesarean section. Mike told<\/a> KKTV, “I was waiting\u00a0to hear a baby cry. I was waiting for it and I never did hear it.” Mike was shocked when medical staff told him that\u00a0Coltyn showed no sign of a heartbeat.<\/p>\n

Mike was instantly faced with the reality of losing his wife and son at the same time. His wife had been without a heartbeat for four whole minutes<\/a>. He clutched\u00a0his son in disbelief\u00a0as the nurses continued to offer help.\u00a0During that time, a nurse told\u00a0Mike that Tracy would be taken out to him\u00a0so he could say goodbye. When he saw his wife, she was under a sheet.<\/p>\n

Then, in what KKTV describes as a miracle, Tracy’s heart started to\u00a0beat. The miracle continued\u00a0as Mike\u00a0was holding his baby boy, and Coltyn finally took a breath. Tracy told<\/a> KKTV that they have no answers for why her son breathed and why she came back. Tracy was told that in certain cases where a mother or a child\u00a0comes back basically from the dead, they are prone to having many medical problems:\u00a0“A lot of times they talk about how the mom could be a vegetable, stuff like that. So to know that I’m breathing, talking, and kind of back to normal — its awesome.”<\/p>\n
