(Newsbusters<\/a>) At a time when Hollywood gushes over abortion<\/a>, this actress is one pro-life rebel.<\/p>\n

Pussycat Dolls singer and Moana<\/em> voice\u00a0Nicole Scherzinger stars as Penny Johnson in ABC’s upcoming Dirty Dancing<\/em> remake. But the 38-year-old nearly refused the role \u2013 because of her stance against abortion.<\/p>\n

In the classic 1987 film, actress Cynthia Rhodes originally played the character Penny, who survives a dangerous illegal abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview<\/a> with the Daily Mail,\u00a0<\/em>Scherzinger revealed the reasoning behind her pro-life views: she could have been aborted.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mum got pregnant with me when she was 17 and had me when she was 18,\u201d Scherzinger admitted. \u201cShe chose.\u201d<\/p>\n

She credited her grandparents for her birth.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer parents were never going to let her have an abortion,\u201d Scherzinger said of her mother. \u201cSo I came out, so I just want to you know encourage everybody to keep your babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her family as a whole, she stressed, stands against abortion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like a crazy thing because, my family, my Papa\u2019s a Bishop and my family\u2019s really hardcore against abortion,\u201d she said, and that influenced her perspective on playing Penny.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I got the role and I almost didn\u2019t take it because I didn\u2019t want to promote abortion,\u201d she added, \u201cbecause my character has an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end, she accepted \u2014 in order to impact others on the issue. \u201cBut I was like,\u201d she explained, \u201chopefully they can learn from you know her ways and I can be a positive influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

To make the decision, Scherzinger, raised Catholic and born in Hawaii, sought the counsel of her family.<\/p>\n

While they initially discouraged her from the role, they changed their minds when her grandfather, a preacher, prayed and discerned it was \u201cwhat she was meant to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe decided that maybe I could be a voice,\u201d she said, \u201cthat I could shed some light on the subject without being preachy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scherzinger\u2019s decision contrasts starkly with Hollywood\u2019s other actresses. Earlier this year, Amy Brenneman\u00a0credited<\/a>\u00a0abortion for giving her \u201c\u2018my life back!\u201d while Natasha Leggero\u00a0declared<\/a>\u00a0abortion is \u201ccool.\u201d Martha Plimpton\u00a0modeled<\/a>\u00a0an \u201cabortion\u201d dress for the campaign #ShoutYourAbortion and Sophia Bush\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0America to \u201cmove on\u201d from abortion to issues that \u201cmatter.\u201d And the\u00a0list goes on<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Besides singing for\u00a0Pussycat Dolls and, more recently, for\u00a0Disney\u2019s Moana<\/em> (a box office success<\/a>), Scherzinger has appeared in shows like How I Met Your Mother<\/em> and movies including Men in Black 3<\/em>. She’s also competed on\u00a0Dancing with the Stars<\/em> and served as a judge for The\u00a0X Factor<\/em>.<\/p>\n
