Hellerstedt<\/em>, but a new report from Americans United for Life, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/442990\/lie-year-abortion-clinics-are-safe\">Unsafe<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/442990\/lie-year-abortion-clinics-are-safe\">,<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>turns this faulty decision on its head with years of documented abuse across\u00a0the industry. The abortion industry has <a href=\"\/news\/why-the-abortion-industry-cant-regulate-itself\/\">already shown it cannot regulate itself<\/a>, and Unsafe\u00a0clearly illustrates what happens when abortion facilities are left to their own devices or regulatory laws are not consistently enforced.\u00a0Unsafe\u00a0describes<em>\u00a0<\/em>eight years of<em>\u00a0<\/em>over 1,400 documented abuses in 32 states by 227 abortion providers.<\/p>\n<p>Denise Burke, AUL&#8217;s vice president of legal affairs, writes about the report for National Review, with &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/442990\/lie-year-abortion-clinics-are-safe\">Lie of the Year: Abortion Clinics Are Safe<\/a>.&#8221; In <em>Hellerstedt<\/em>, the Supreme Court ruled\u00a0that the abortion industry was a safe one, but used\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/pro-abortion-justices-relied-on-faulty-logic-in-abortion-decision\/\">faulty logic<\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/a-debunked-study-helped-pro-abortion-justices-overturn-texas-law\/\">debunked studies<\/a> to do so. Whole Woman&#8217;s Health (an abortion chain and the plaintiff in <em>Hellerstedt<\/em>) has five facilities included in the Unsafe\u00a0report &#8212; unsurprising, considering <a href=\"\/news\/do-abortion-advocates-care-more-about-abortion-than-about-women\/\">its history<\/a> of unsafe conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/stunning-report-abortion-industry-one-nations-greatest-health-crises\/unsafe-aul\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-158346\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-158346 size-large\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL-700x437.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL-700x437.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL-500x312.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Unsafe-AUL.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Burke notes that the reality of an unregulated abortion industry may be even worse than the report reveals:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Significantly, efforts to discern the true state of abortion practice in most states were stymied by a dearth of protective laws in a number of states, a lack of reporting in others, and limited public availability of information on abortion providers in still more states. We can easily deduce, therefore, that the epidemic of substandard abortion practice is worse than Unsafe reveals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H3ixv5XBi44\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What AUL<em> was<\/em> able to uncover, from 32 states,\u00a0is indeed troubling. The 206-page report deals with over 1,400 violations at 227 facilities (full list of violations <a href=\"http:\/\/unsafereport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/AUL_Alleged-Violations.pdf\">available here<\/a>), 39 of which are Planned Parenthood affiliates. The Planned Parenthood facilities documented with violations in Unsafe are found in\u00a0Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst all the violations, there\u00a0are only 34 license revocations to be found in Unsafe, and, perhaps most stunning of all, 65 repeat offenders who have been abusing women in the same way &#8212; while simultaneously killing off innocent preborn children &#8212; for years. The more than 1,400 violations include flagrant violations of laws in states that have attempted to regulate the abortion industry. Several of them even paid with their lives, in what Unsafe\u00a0refers\u00a0to as an &#8220;Epidemic of\u00a0Substandard Abortion Facilities and Practices.&#8221; The report also covers the dangers of abortionists who travel from state to state, known as &#8220;circuit riders,&#8221; and it\u00a0highlights abortionists who should be known\u00a0for their history of abuses, including circuit rider <a href=\"\/news\/tag\/james-scott-pendergraft-iv\/\">James <\/a><a href=\"\/news\/tag\/james-pendergraft\/\">Pendergraft,<\/a>\u00a0who has had his license revoked;\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/leroy-carhart-needs-investigated\/\">LeRoy Carhart,<\/a>\u00a0who has abandoned patients with his circuit riding and had women die under his care; and\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/tag\/steven-chase-brigham\/\">Steven<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/tag\/steven-brigham\/\">Brigham<\/a>, who has also operated and had his license revoked in several states, due to his rampant abuses.<\/p>\n<p>While the report warns that\u00a0<em>Hellerstedt<\/em>\u00a0means abortion industry abuses will continue, this is both\u00a0a challenge and a wake-up call for the pro-life movement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Moreover, with the Supreme Court\u2019s recent decision in <em>Whole Woman\u2019s Health v. Hellerstedt<\/em>, prioritizing \u201cmere access\u201d to abortion facilities and abortion industry profitability over women\u2019s health and safety, we can expect the problems may get worse. It will certainly get worse unless pro-life Americans and their representatives take immediate action to confront and remedy the abortion industry\u2019s dangerous practices and the rejection of medically appropriate health and safety standards of patient care. AUL\u2019s innovative and highly successful Women\u2019s Protection Project, discussed in this volume, provides the best \u201cblueprint\u201d for effective legislative action to address these appalling public health threats.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Burke also writes for National Review, &#8220;[t]he Hellerstedt decision is not a censure of legislative efforts to expose and remedy abortion\u2019s negative maternal-health consequences; instead, it explicitly challenges state officials and caring Americans to better document the epidemic of inferior care being provided in America\u2019s abortion clinics.&#8221; Indeed, if the information provided in\u00a0Unsafe had been available as evidence to the Supreme Court in\u00a0<em>Hellerstedt<\/em>, there may have been a different outcome.\u00a0Clark Forsythe, AUL&#8217;s acting president and senior counsel, writes that Unsafe was a direct response to the Supreme Court:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the Supreme Court threw out Texas\u2019 health and safety standards for abortion clinics, indicating that such protections would be constitutional \u2026 if only there was sufficient evidence of the need for such protections, Americans United for Life responded, \u201cGame on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report also proclaims\u00a0that &#8220;[t]houghtful, caring Americans will never abandon women to the whims of predatory abortion profiteers. The public health crisis revealed in Unsafe and the solutions provided by the Women\u2019s Protection Project provide the tools necessary to address the dangerous practices and conditions that dominate America\u2019s abortion industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/unsafereport.org\/\">Unsafe website<\/a> invites viewers to\u00a0sign a petition for states to investigate abortion facilities\u00a0and allows access to the report for anyone willing to provide an email address or sign the petition.
