At Refinery29, NARAL board member Renee Bracey Sherman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2016\/12\/131858\/tom-price-abortion-birth-control-access-essay\">pens an open letter to Price<\/a>, the thesis of which is revealingly boiled down by the headline Refinery29 decided to run with for Twitter:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dear Rep. You got pregnant because you had sex.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jeannine Johnson (@SweetJeanninee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SweetJeanninee\/status\/806200266311745536\">December 6, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The content of the actual article isn\u2019t much better (but then, reality-based commentary may be too much to expect from an author who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RBraceySherman\/status\/806921463211130880\">claims<\/a> \u201canti-abortion policy\u201d is \u201cdeeply rooted in racism and classism and xenophobia\u201d):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And in 2012, you doubted the very existence of people who have a difficult time affording birth control. &#8220;Bring me one woman who has been left behind,&#8221; you told a ThinkProgress reporter at the time. &#8220;Bring me one. There\u2019s not one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well, Rep. Price, I am one of those women.<\/p>\n<p>When I was 19 years old, I struggled to afford birth control and became pregnant because of it. At the time, I was working a retail job earning just above minimum wage while I attended college. Though I was still living at home, my parents taught me about personal responsibility, and I paid for most things on my own \u2014 gas in my car, meals, and my birth control co-pays. This was before the Affordable Care Act made birth control available without a co-pay. That meant I had to spend $120 every three months&#8230;. At one point, I didn\u2019t have the money to pick up another pack \u2014 the cost would have been most of my paycheck. So, I thought I\u2019d wait until the next pay period and use the little money I had to get to work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, Sherman was most likely nineteen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/reneebraceysherman\">somewhere around 2003<\/a>, so it\u2019s not as if she\u2019s talking about some dark, dystopian era where birth control was hidden away; in fact, even without Obamacare\u2019s magical, no co-pay utopia, a monthly supply of birth control could be had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/dc-target-sells-birth-control-9-month-georgetown-student-tells-congress-friends-are-going-broke-pay-pills\/article\/632955?nopager=1\">for as low as $9<\/a> (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/292202\/my-contraceptive-haul-charles-c-w-cooke\">free without much effort<\/a>). Second, \u201cmy parents taught me about personal responsibility\u201d rings a little hollow when the lessons apparently didn\u2019t include the concept of delaying gratification if you know you\u2019re unprepared. It\u2019s bad enough to\u00a0rail against the very concept of waiting for sex over the long term, but now waiting <em>a single pay period<\/em> (probably anywhere from two weeks to a month) is too much to expect of people?<\/p>\n<p>By her own telling, she <em>could<\/em> afford the pill\u2014just not at the precise moment she wanted (not \u201cneeded\u201d) it. There\u2019s a word for not always being able to buy all the things you want when you want them: \u201cadulthood.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ah, but you see, that brings us to another reason it totally wasn\u2019t Sherman\u2019s fault she got pregnant\u2014she didn\u2019t get the proper sex education:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the time, I didn\u2019t realize that I could get pregnant if I missed a week or two of pills. In my high school sex-ed classes, the teacher preached about his kids and their purity vows and showed us slides of STDs, rather than giving us helpful information about sex and family planning. Like most teens, I turned to my friends to fill in the gaps, asking them the questions that I didn\u2019t feel comfortable asking my parents, or looking for answers I didn\u2019t get in class. One of the myths my friends told me was that if I\u2019d been on birth control for a long time, it would build up in my system and I couldn\u2019t get pregnant (definitely false, as I later learned). And, like many teens, I didn\u2019t know how to negotiate consent or condom use in my relationship, which later turned abusive. Eventually, I became pregnant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, where to begin? First, if a puritanical teacher misinforming her is the real culprit now, then her story doesn\u2019t have anything to do with Tom Price, HHS, Obamacare, or affordability after all. Nice work, Refinery29!<\/p>\n<p>Second, I have a hard time believing that how-to information on birth control was particularly hard to come by at Evanston Township High School (Sherman\u2019s school, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/reneebraceysherman\">her LinkedIn<\/a>), considering that this is the kind of place that <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/news\/printnews.asp?id=3534\">started<\/a> <em>giving kids condoms and birth-control prescriptions<\/em> all the way back in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Third, kids not \u201cfeeling comfortable\u201d talking to their parents about sex is a cultural problem, not something government can fix (and certainly not by forcing other people to finance contraceptives or distributing them without Mom and Dad\u2019s input, which only widens divides between parent and child).<\/p>\n<p>Fourth, as tragic as an abusive boyfriend is, it\u2019s a separate question from the policy case Sherman\u2019s making. How is\u00a0\u201cnegotiating consent or condom use\u201d\u2014a straightforward matter of saying \u201cI don\u2019t want to\u201d and\/or \u201cwe\u2019re only doing this if you use one\u201d\u2014some sort of murky, complex negotiation?<\/p>\n<p>Fifth, everything we\u2019ve talked about so far sounds like a lot of headache, hardship, and confusion could have been entirely\u2014entirely!\u2014avoided by simply taking sex off the table until (at least) adulthood. Just ponder the misery we\u2019re inflicting on our kids in the name of \u201csexual liberation,\u201d and ask yourself how freeing or empowering it really sounds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I knew I wasn\u2019t ready to become a parent. So I made an appointment at the abortion clinic, and maxed out my first credit card, which had a $500 limit that was supposed to only be used in emergencies. This was an emergency. I was relieved, and to this day, the decision to have an abortion is still one of the best I have ever made.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And yet, Baby Sherman lost his or her life because of that decision.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.liebertpub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/jwh.2013.4334?journalCode=jwh\">Research has shown that we [black women] are significantly more likely to experience symptoms related to uterine fibroids<\/a>, which can make periods unbearable. Contraception serves as relief from excruciating pain until we can afford surgery if our doctors recommend it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a particularly nonsensical red herring\u2014can Sherman name one pro-lifer who thinks using contraception to <a href=\"\/news\/glamour-lies-to-public-about-plan-b-abortifacient-nature\/\">potentially kill offspring<\/a> is at all the same as using it to treat different conditions? (Recall that when <a href=\"\/news\/nancy-pelosi-wants-to-force-georgetown-law-to-subsidize-sandra-flukes-promiscuity\/\">Sandra Fluke kicked off her contraception crusade<\/a>, the university she targeted\u00a0actually did cover birth control\u00a0prescriptions for separate medical conditions.)<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Black women know what\u2019s best for\u00a0our\u00a0bodies. Trust us, Rep. Price.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Very well. In that case, I\u2019ll defer to <a href=\"\/news\/alveda-king-says-vote-candidates-oppose-abortion-planned-parenthood\/\">Alveda King<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dailysignal.com\/2015\/01\/27\/star-parkers-personal-confession-adamant-ending-abortion\/\">Star Parker<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/article\/2570540\">Mia Love<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/deneenborelli.com\/2016\/03\/horrifying-blogger-calls-her-abortion-a-joyful-experience\/\">Deneen Borelli<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/insider.foxnews.com\/2016\/01\/11\/crystal-wright-democratic-party-literally-killing-black-americans\">Crystal Wright<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/news\/actress-stacey-dash-slams-planned-parenthood-aborting-black-babies\/\">Stacey Dash<\/a>, and let those pro-life black women explain to you how you\u2019re actually asking to be able to destroy <a href=\"\/news\/where-the-my-body-my-choice-argument-fails\/\">someone else&#8217;s body, not your own<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You\u2019ve spent your career trying to make abortion illegal \u2014 everything from 20-week\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-bill\/36\">bans<\/a>\u00a0based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2010\/09\/13\/nebraska-falsehood-fetal-pain\/\">bunk medical advice<\/a>\u00a0to voting for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/votes\/112-2012\/h299\">legislation<\/a>\u00a0that bans abortion based on racist and sexist reasons. You\u2019re even a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/article\/2016\/12\/01\/trumps-hhs-pick-member-group-falsely-linking-abortion-cancer\/\">member<\/a>\u00a0of a professional medical group that claims an abortion causes breast cancer, though there\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breastcancer\/moreinformation\/is-abortion-linked-to-breast-cancer\">no medical evidence<\/a> supporting it; and that advocates for personhood at conception, rather than the medically accurate implantation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wrong on all counts\u2014see <a href=\"\/news\/abortions-bans-centered-fetal-pain-based-factually-solid-ground\/\">here<\/a> for the truth about fetal pain, <a href=\"\/news\/unreal-aclu-argues-racist-ban-racist-abortions\/\">here<\/a> for the insanity of claiming it\u2019s racist and sexist to ban racist or sexist abortions, <a href=\"\/news\/nice-try-daily-beast-but-texas-is-not-lying-to-women-about-abortion\/\">here<\/a> for the medical evidence on the abortion-breast cancer link, and <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-doc-miscarried-babies-never-alive\/\">here<\/a> for the real accuracy of conception vs. implantation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\"><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>At the core of this is a deep level of hypocrisy. You believe that the Affordable Care Act is government intrusion on health care, yet religiously vote to insert the government in between people seeking abortions and their providers. So, which is it? Do you want the government guiding the speculum, or a doctor?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps\u00a0you shouldn\u2019t participate in any debate on an issue unless you can accurately state what your opponent\u2019s position actually is. Abortion <strong>kills human beings<\/strong>. Government\u2019s most basic job is to stop people from killing each other. \u201cInsert[ing] the government between people seeking abortions and their providers\u201d is no different than \u201cinserting the government\u201d between any other victim and perpetrator.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You\u2019ve been nominated for an important role, and it\u2019s imperative that you, as your new boss President-elect Trump has promised, represent all Americans, which includes the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/elections\/2014\/7-in-10\/?referrer=https:\/\/www.google.com\/\">7 in 10<\/a>\u00a0who believe abortion should remain legal and accessible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah, the infernal \u201c7 in 10 pro-choice majority\u201d: a shining example of the #FakeNews everybody\u2019s talking about these days, a notorious bogus statement that pro-aborts have been peddling for years. It wasn\u2019t true <a href=\"\/news\/naral-releases-deceptive-ads-to-unseat-abortion-obsessed-governors\/\">then<\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/of-course-narals-hogue-crazy-about-new-democrat-abortion-platform\/\">then<\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/abortion-advocates-cry-torture-over-indiana-ban-on-aborting-disabled-babies\/\">then<\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/abortion-lobby-in-deep-denial-over-last-weeks-electoral-thrashing\/\">then<\/a>, or <a href=\"\/news\/pro-abortion-freakout-over-hhs-sec-pick-could-be-good\/\">then<\/a>, and it\u2019s <a href=\"\/news\/new-poll-warns-not-to-overturn-roe-v-wade-dont-buy-it\/\">not true now<\/a>. If 70% really supported keeping elective abortion legal, you\u2019d think Gallup would have gotten that result at least once <a href=\"http:\/\/cns7prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/attachments\/gallup-may_6-10-2015-abortion_survey.pdf\">over twenty years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman closes with the line, \u201cTogether we can truly make America, and abortion access, great again.\u201d But the truth is (as famously immortalized in a quote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2011\/06\/huntsman-lincoln-and-hallmark\/\">popularly yet incorrectly attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville<\/a>), America\u2019s greatness is ultimately derived from her decency.<\/p>\n<p>To accept that we must sacrifice our children en masse will not make America greater; it will only deepen our degradation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As abortion apologists continue to incite hysteria over Donald Trump\u2019s choice of pro-life Tom Price to head the Department of Health and Human Services, they invariably reveal more about themselves than about their target.
