{"id":158077,"date":"2016-12-10T11:39:13","date_gmt":"2016-12-10T16:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=158077"},"modified":"2016-12-12T15:04:28","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T20:04:28","slug":"naral-freaks-out-over-choose-life-license-plates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/naral-freaks-out-over-choose-life-license-plates\/","title":{"rendered":"NARAL freaks out over Wisconsin&#8217;s &#8220;Choose Life&#8221; license plates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Citizens of Wisconsin will soon\u00a0have the option\u00a0to express pro-life values by purchasing a recently approved license plate design, featuring an ink stamp of a baby&#8217;s foot and the words, &#8220;Choose Life.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbaypressgazette.com\/story\/news\/education\/2016\/12\/08\/controversial-pro-life-license-plate-approved\/95140408\/\">Green Bay Press-Gazette<\/a>\u00a0reports, &#8220;Annual $25 donations for issuance and renewal of each plate will be awarded\u00a0to pregnancy resource centers in Madison, Milwaukee and Appleton&#8217;s Womankind Medical Clinic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The special plate was proposed by Choose Life Wisconsin, a corporation formed by Wisconsin Family Action and Pro-Life Wisconsin. Choose Life Wisconsin President Julaine Appling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpr.org\/wisconsin-transportation-officials-approve-anti-abortion-license-plates\">celebrated<\/a> the state&#8217;s approval of the plates:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is an incredible way for people all over the state to make a donation that will help the on the ground frontline resource centers who help women in crisis situations and help them make wise choices when they have an unplanned pregnancy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Friday, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin issued a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoicewisconsin.org\/media\/press\/20161209.shtml\">statement<\/a> condemning the license plates, and labeling crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) as &#8220;fake women&#8217;s clinics.&#8221; The statement reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Crisis pregnancy centers are run by anti-choice (&#8220;pro-life\u201d) groups and are designed to be easily mistaken for real reproductive health clinics. An investigation by NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin conducted in 2012 found that there were at least 79 CPCs operating in the state. In 2016, there are only three abortion clinics remaining.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An &#8220;investigation&#8221;? To find out how many crisis pregnancy centers exist in the state? Ok then, Sherlock. Glad you figured out how to use Google.<\/p>\n<p>NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin executive director Eliza Cussen added, &#8220;[Crisis pregnancy centers]\u00a0operate solely to mislead women who are seeking health care and use a moment of vulnerability to push an extremist agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And of course, by &#8220;extremist agenda,&#8221;\u00a0she means\u00a0helping pregnant mothers\u00a0through a time of crisis &#8211; without selling abortions. Yeah, totally extremist. When is the pro-choice camp going to figure out that people aren&#8217;t buying their ad hominems and empty phraseology?<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cussen continued, claiming that Choose Life Wisconsin &#8220;is an organization that does real social harm that is centered around restricting the human rights of women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Appling countered that buying the Choose Life plate is, quite literally, a matter of &#8220;choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one\u2019s forcing anyone to buy the plate,&#8221;\u00a0Appling said. &#8220;This is an option just like all the other specialty license plates are for people who want to go purchase those&#8230; It\u2019s a country where we have lots of opportunities for pluralistic messages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Wisconsin Public Radio, Cussen suggested that pro-choicers should present alternatives to the Choose Life plate.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm&#8230;
