In September 2016, the United Nations held its\u00a0first ever Summit for Refugees and Migrants. During that meeting, the assembly adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants<\/a>. According to a press release<\/a>, the Declaration\u2019s alleged purpose is to \u201cexpress the political will of world leaders to save lives, protect rights, and share responsibility on a global scale.\u201d<\/p>\n

The commitments contained in the Declaration include to \u201cprotect the human rights of all refugees and migrants, regardless of status,\u201d to \u201cprevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Section 31 of the Declaration<\/a> seemingly contradicts the basic human right of life. This section guarantees access to sexual and reproductive health-care services.\u201d Abortion is considered by most in the assembly to be a \u201creproductive health-care service.\u201d<\/p>\n
