Mariza Reulas is in trouble. The California single mom faces a year in jail for selling an \u201cillegal substance.\u201d What substance was that?<\/p>\n

Food.<\/p>\n

Reulas belonged to a Facebook group where members planned dinners and sold homemade dishes to one another. According to San Joaquin County deputy district attorney Kelly McDaniel, that’s a problem. She insists \u201cfood prepared in a facility that does not inspect it creates a risk to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

As National Review’s Katherine Timpf pointed out<\/a>, it’s not clear how the public at large would be endangered. After all, sales were only made to folks who visited the page and it was known that all offerings were homemade. Those wanting\u00a0a meal prepared to government standards risks could visit a restaurant instead.<\/p>\n

Of course, a restaurant isn’t the only place you\u2019d expect strict regulations to be enforced–an outfit calling itself a “clinic” would be another. That\u2019s why Texas passed a bill requiring abortionists to have hospital admitting privileges within 30 miles of where they operate. Another provision held abortion centers to the same safety standards as other surgical facilities.<\/p>\n

That makes sense given how admitting privileges are required at medical clinics of all kinds<\/a> and that women have died<\/a> while awaiting care for botched abortions. Raising standards makes sense too considering the unsafe conditions<\/a> uncovered at abortion centers around the country. Still, not everyone agreed.<\/p>\n

Whole Woman\u2019s Health didn\u2019t, and it launched a legal challenge. While the abortion chain promises \u201cfabulous\u201d care, state inspectors found something else<\/a>: suction machines with \u201cnumerous rusty spots,\u201d something that \u201chad the likelihood to cause infection.\u201d The potential for \u201crodents to enter the facility\u201d was also noted.<\/p>\n

Additional inspections documented<\/a> \u201cinfection control issues\u201d from staff failing to \u201cperform the correct procedure for the sterilization of the surgical instruments.\u201d The outfit was also fined<\/a> for lacking \u201ca midlevel provider, a registered nurse, or a \u00a0licensed vocational nurse\u201d:<\/p>\n
