It\u2019s been a long time coming, though, considering that the abortion giant\u2019s future depends on ending others\u2019 futures.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image-blog_body-100 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.newsbusters.org\/styles\/blog_body-100\/s3\/images\/maddow_1.jpg?itok=pKOsMntQ\" alt=\"\" width=\"637\" height=\"358\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During her MSNBC show Wednesday night, host Rachel Maddow invited Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards on as a guest. With Richards, Maddow focused on the \u201crisk\u201d to abortion and fretted about a \u201cdoomsday scenario\u201d after Donald Trump\u2019s win in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>After reading a Planned Parenthood statement reacting to the election, Maddow worried about abortion groups\u2019 emergency back-up plan. Earlier this year, Planned Parenthood\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2016\/10\/12\/nets-silent-trump-pro-life-support-stress-clinton-abortion\">endorsed<\/a>\u00a0Hillary Clinton for president, while Donald Trump\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2016\/10\/12\/nets-silent-trump-pro-life-support-stress-clinton-abortion\">boasted<\/a>\u00a0support from pro-life leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy question though is, for the people who work in this field\u00a0of civil\u00a0rights, for the people who work\u00a0on reproductive rights under all\u00a0the pressures they&#8217;ve been\u00a0under all these years,\u201d Maddow began, \u201c<strong>is there a doomsday plan\u00a0for a time like this?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By \u201ca time like this,\u201d Maddow clarified she meant a time with \u201cMike Pence as vice\u00a0president, the Republicans in\u00a0control of the House, the\u00a0Republicans in control of the\u00a0Senate and a conservative\u00a0majority, potentially a big one,\u00a0on the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For an answer, Maddow turned to Richards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Am I right to ask about a\u00a0doomsday plan?<\/strong>\u201d Maddow pressed.\u00a0\u201c<strong>Do you see this as a doomsday\u00a0scenario for reproductive\u00a0rights?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-filter\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"video-filter video-mrctv video-center vf-187411\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/187411\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Richards responded by saying \u201cour doors stay open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanned Parenthood\u2019s been\u00a0around for a hundred years,\u201d she said, \u201cand we&#8217;ve been fighting for the right\u00a0to reproductive healthcare for\u00a0that long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maddow next asked about the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in America. \u201cDo you think that\u00a0<em>Roe vs. Wade\u00a0<\/em>is at risk?\u201d she asked Richards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Richards responded. \u201cI mean, I think\u00a0<em>Roe vs. Wade<\/em>\u00a0was on the ballot in this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it was, it didn\u2019t work in Planned Parenthood\u2019s favor. But Richards didn\u2019t dwell on that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Trump has said that in his\u00a0acceptance speech that he was going to govern for all\u00a0Americans,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope that includes women,\u00a0because of course women overwhelmingly did\u00a0not vote for him, particularly\u00a0women of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not admit, however, that white women \u201chelped elect Donald Trump\u201d \u2013 and that\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/01\/us\/politics\/white-women-helped-elect-donald-trump.html\">according the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Richards went on to call<em>\u00a0Roe v. Wade\u00a0<\/em>the \u201cright to\u00a0safe and legal abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it is supported by people of all\u00a0parties,\u201d she said (it is also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2016\/09\/28\/nets-hyde-dem-push-taxpayer-funded-abortions\">opposed by people of all parties<\/a>, Ms. Richards).\u00a0\u201cSo it is important, and we will absolutely be\u00a0fighting for a justice of the\u00a0Supreme Court who supports this\u00a0right for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maddow burst her bubble: \u201cI don&#8217;t think you will get\u00a0a justice of the Supreme Court who\u00a0will support this right for\u00a0women.\u201d But Maddow gave Richards a change to encourage abortion supporters in her next question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people who want to recommit themselves to the things in\u00a0this\u00a0country that they can control that they think are good\u00a0for the country, people who care\u00a0a lot about what you&#8217;re saying\u00a0about reproductive rights,\u201d she asked, \u201cwhat\u00a0do you think people can do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richards recommended Americans \u201cjoin\u00a0organizations and join movements that represent their \u2013 their point of\u00a0view and their values.\u201d For her, of course, that meant organizations like Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Her hope came from \u201cyoung people\u201d who are \u201coverwhelmingly progressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]hey&#8217;re taking action and to\u00a0me that&#8217;s where we&#8217;re investing\u00a0in Planned Parenthood, is a\u00a0whole new generation of folks who believe in LGBT rights, they believe in\u00a0women&#8217;s rights, and civil rights and voting rights\u00a0and criminal justice and\u00a0immigrant rights,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>An abortion giant \u201cinvesting\u201d in a \u201cnew generation\u201d is downright ironic.
