{"id":156005,"date":"2016-11-04T08:30:39","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T12:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=156005"},"modified":"2016-11-04T09:58:20","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T13:58:20","slug":"raleigh-pregnancy-center-wins-legal-battle-will-move-next-abortion-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/raleigh-pregnancy-center-wins-legal-battle-will-move-next-abortion-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"Raleigh pregnancy center wins legal battle and will move next to abortion facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/city-zoners-announce-pro-life-center-can-move-next-door-to-abortionist\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0Common sense prevailed in Raleigh, North Carolina, Tuesday, when the city\u2019s zoning staff announced it would allow a life-affirming pregnancy center to move next door to an abortion clinic, bringing a five-month battle over the use of its own\u00a0land to a conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Hand of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center had purchased property adjacent to an abortion clinic, A Preferred Women\u2019s Health Center, in January of 2016, and had planned to move their free peer counseling, STI testing and ultrasound services from their present location this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The pregnancy center\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/your-choice-pro-life-clinic-going-toe-to-toe-with-big-abortion-in-raleigh\">first encountered friction<\/a>\u00a0in late April from a handful of pro-abortion residents at a citizen\u2019s advisory council meeting, followed by accusations from the abortion facility of what it called the\u00a0pro-life group\u2019s \u201cunderhanded\u201d motives.<\/p>\n<p>When the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/raleigh-rezone-denied\">Raleigh City Council voted, 7-0<\/a>, to deny Hand of Hope the right to use the property it purchased for its life-saving mission, citing previously unannounced zoning plans, Mauck &amp; Baker LLC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/hand-of-hope-sues-raleigh-for-playing-politics-with-pregnant-women\">filed a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0on the center\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd1\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_by_250_top_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0\" class=\"ArticleAd1a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179053567-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Challenging the city\u2019s overreach on constitutional grounds, and arguing that the city\u2019s actions violate the 2000 Religious Land &amp; Institutionalized Persons Act, which prohibits government entities from unduly discriminating against religious nonprofits like Hand of Hope, Mauck &amp; Baker filed its lawsuit Aug. 17 in federal court.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the firm, along with Hand of Hope and its executive director Tonya Baker Nelson, is celebrating the city zoning staff\u2019s decision to formally all life-affirming help to move in next door to the abortion business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Zoning Staff\u2019s interpretation is a step in the right direction,\u201d Mauck &amp; Baker attorney Noel Sterett\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/mauckbaker\/docs\/hand_of_hope_press_release\">said in a press release Thursday.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe filed suit in order to free Hand of Hope to serve the pregnant women in Raleigh. The sooner women in need have access to free pregnancy resources and support the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nelson founded A Hand of Hope in 2005 and has overseen the organization\u2019s establishment of two locations\u2014one in Fuquay-Varina and the site that is set to move in next door to the abortion business.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleAd2\">\n<p><!-- \/1011927\/LAN_300_BY_250_mid_article --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0\" class=\"ArticleAd2a\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1473179101244-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Her passion to start a pro-life pregnancy center began after she was pressured to abort in her early 20\u2019s.
